Spend your lunch break at the Iguana! It’s BYOBB (Bring Your Own Brown Bag) for this book club, which meets on the third Thursday of each month at noon. We’ll supply the table, chairs, and plenty of books. Participants will choose from advance (pre-publication) copies of fiction and non-fiction titles that are not yet available to the public. Read your pre-pub selection and join us for a future session to share feedback with the group. Limited to 10 participants. Free, but registration is required. Call 301-695-2500 or email
  • 10/19/17 07:00 PM - 10/19/17 08:00 PM
Join us to discuss the 2017 One Maryland One Book selection Purple Hibiscus, written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Discussion will be led by Nay Keppler, a librarian with Frederick County Public Libraries. Copies of Purple Hibiscus are discounted 20% at Curious Iguana four weeks prior to the event. One Maryland One Book is a program created by Maryland Humanities to "bring together diverse people in the communities across the state through the shared experience of reading the same book." In the spirit of Dewey's 24-Hour Readathon online, Curious Iguana is hosting a 12-hour in-store readathon to benefit one of our favorite local nonprofits, Children of Incarcerated Parents Partnership. The Helen J. Serini Foundation has generously agreed to support our efforts, with a $1 donation for every page read during our event.
Here's how our Curious Readathon works:
    • Stop by or call 301-695-2500 to reserve a 30-minute timeslot in our "reading chair," which will be positioned in our front window. Only 24 timeslots are available for this event, so sign up soon!
    • On October 21 at your reserved timeslot, bring your favorite book (or borrow one of ours) and enjoy a half-hour of quiet reading time at the Iguana.
    • Track how many pages you read. Our goal for each reader is 30 pages--but no pressure!
    • This event is recommended for ages 12 and up. There's no fee to participate, but we do suggest a minimum donation of $10--or, even better, $1 a page--to Children of Incarcerated Parents Partnership. We will accept cash or checks for COIPP on the day of the event.
Can't join us for the Readathon? Read at home for as long as you like, and donate $1 or more per page to Children of Incarcerated Parents Partnership. You can make your donation online or mail check to P.O. Box 791, Frederick, MD 21705-0791. Be sure to indicate that your donation is from the Curious Readathon so we can include it in our totals.
