SUMMARY:Amy S. Hansen: Wanda Hears the Stars
DESCRIPTION:Join Curious Iguana at C. Burr Artz Library on Thursday\, March 26 from 4:00-5:00 pm for an event with children’s author Amy S. Hansen. Amy will read her book Wanda Hears the Stars and perform a fun science demonstration! Following her reading\, Amy will answer questions and sign books. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: A nonfiction picture book biography of astrophysicist Wanda Díaz Merced and how losing her sight didn’t stop her from studying the stars. \nGrowing up in Puerto Rico\, Wanda Díaz Merced wanted to learn everything she could about the stars. But in college she started losing her sight. How could she study what she couldn’t see? \nWanda found a way. She learned to hear the stars using sonification\, which converts data into sounds. Listening to those chimes and drumbeats\, she made new discoveries about the universe. \nToday Wanda is a leading advocate for inclusive science. She and her friend Amy S. Hansen collaborated on this book to inspire children to follow their curiosity no matter the challenges. As Wanda urges\, “Never give up!” \nAbout the author: Amy S. Hansen is an award-winning author of more than than thirty-five books\, most of them about science. She and Wanda met when Wanda first arrived at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Amy was astounded when she tried listening to Wanda’s data! The two friends decided to write a book together to inspire all readers to find a path to success. Amy lives with her family in Maryland.

SUMMARY:Richard Bell: The American Revolution and the Fate of the World
DESCRIPTION:With America’s 250th birthday on the horizon\, come join us on Thursday\, January 22\, from 6:30 pm-7:30 pm for a fascinating look into the past with author Richard Bell as he discusses his new book The American Revolution and the Fate of the World. Following his talk\, Richard will answer questions and sign books. Copies of The American Revolution and the Fate of the World will be available for purchase at the event. \nLocation: C. Burr Artz Public Library – 110 E Patrick St\, Frederick\, MD 21701 \nThis free\, public event is presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \n\nAbout the book: A prize-winning historian’s fascinating and unfamiliar recasting of America’s war of independence as a transformative international event \nIn this revelatory and enthralling book\, award-winning historian Richard Bell reveals the full breadth and depth of America’s founding event. The American Revolution was not only the colonies’ triumphant liberation from the rule of an overbearing England; it was also a cataclysm that pulled in participants from around the globe and threw the entire world order into chaos. Repositioning the Revolution at the center of an international web\, Bell’s narrative ranges as far afield as India\, Africa\, Central America\, and Australia. As his lens widens\, the “War of Independence” manifests itself as a sprawling struggle that upended the lives of millions of people on every continent and fundamentally transformed the way the world works\, disrupting trade\, restructuring penal systems\, stirring famine\, and creating the first global refugee crisis. Bell conveys the impact of these developments at home and abroad by grounding the narrative in the gripping stories of individuals—including women\, minorities\, and other disenfranchised people. The result is an unforgettable and unexpected work of American history that shifts everything we thought we knew about our creation story. \nAbout the author: Richard Bell is Professor of History at the University of Maryland and author of the book Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and their Astonishing Odyssey Home which was a finalist for the George Washington Prize and the Harriet Tubman Prize. He has held major research fellowships at Yale\, Cambridge\, and the Library of Congress and is the recipient of the National Endowment of the Humanities Public Scholar award and the Andrew Carnegie Fellowship. His new book\, The American Revolution and the Fate of the World\, was published by Penguin in November 2025.

SUMMARY:Charles Ferguson: Presidential Seclusion
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at C. Burr Artz Public Library on Monday\, November 10\, from 6:00-7:00 pm to hear from author Charles Ferguson as he discusses his new book Presidential Seclusion: The Power of Camp David. This enlightening book shares the little-known impact of this mountain retreat on the nation and the world. Following his presentation\, Charles will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Presidential Seclusion will be available for purchase at the event. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: Behind the gates of Camp David—where presidents find solitude\, forge diplomacy\, and shape history in absolute secrecy. \nThe Presidential Retreat Camp David is shrouded in mystery\, and rightfully so. The hidden retreat atop the Catoctin Mountains is the one place the President\, First Family\, and invited guests can gather in absolute secrecy for relaxation\, rejuvenation\, and world-changing decisions. Because of this dedication to privacy\, and a desire to maintain the mystery and exclusivity of the last bastion of solitude for the President\, few comprehensive accounts exist detailing the storied history of Camp David and the role the “Spirit of Camp David” plays in world affairs. \nPresidential Seclusion provides an exclusive account of the mysterious and storied retreat. Extensively researched from Presidential Archives as well as from the pages of Presidential memoirs\, this non-partisan\, informative account weaves exclusive stories into a tapestry revealing the importance of Camp David on diplomacy and world history. Written by the former Camp David Historian\, this personalized tour of the exclusive retreat makes tree-shrouded trails\, majestic vistas\, and rooms where history happened over the last 80 years accessible to everyone. As you read\, the “Spirit of Camp David” is revealed to infuse everyone who works and visits the President’s private mountain retreat\, mainly how Camp David personally affected its primary guests\, the fifteen First Families fortunate to call the private retreat a second home. \nAbout the author: Charles Ferguson spent three and a half years as the Camp David Historian and Presidential Chaplain. During that time\, he coordinated with 14 Presidential Libraries to better tell the true story of the President’s exclusive mountaintop retreat\, scouring records and memoirs for engaging stories\, providing glimpses into the hidden world of Camp David. Conducting hundreds of tours for personal guests of the President\, his accessible storytelling draws you into the wonders of Camp David as if you are walking the historical private trails with your own personal tour guide. \nHis writings have appeared on the Faith and Leadership website and in The Presbyterian Outlook\, Presbyterians Today\, and the United States Naval Institute’s Proceedings magazine.

SUMMARY:Andie Burke: With Stars in Her Eyes
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at C. Burr Artz Library on Tuesday\, September 16 from 6:00-7:00 pm to celebrate all things “sapphic bookstore romance” with us and local author Andie Burke! Andie will be discussing her latest novel\, With Stars in Her Eyes\, with local book club host Stephanie Jenks. This story centers on love found in the most bookish of places; when cellist Courtney returns home for a respite from a botched performance and spiraling rumors\, she stumbles into love with a newcomer looking for a fresh start… who happens to work in the tattoo shop next door to Courtney’s best friend’s bookshop. After her conversation\, Andie will answer questions and sign books. \nCopies of With Stars in Her Eyes will be available for purchase at the event but you can preorder signed and personalized copies ahead of time on our website here. \n*Include personalization requests in the notes field at checkout and select “Pick Up” if you’d like to pick it up at the event or shipping if you cannot attend. \n  \nThis free\, public event is presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: A swoon-worthy sapphic bookstore romance about fresh starts and finding that one person who feels like home from breakout author Andie Burke (Fly with Me). \nSeconds from a meteoric career launch\, cellist Courtney Starling suffers a frightening migraine attack during a key performance. While harmful rumors fly\, she escapes to her happy place—her best friend’s Kansas bookshop. Courtney’s working incognito when a scream sends her leaping off a shelving ladder to find the woman who screamed cowering near the register. \nWhen Thea Quinn dropped in for a misdelivered package\, she did not expect a mortifying encounter with a bearded dragon in front of an inconveniently attractive bookseller. Clutching an upcoming book club flyer and the tattered shreds of her dignity\, she heads back to her new piercing job at the tattoo shop next door. She moved to this quirky place for a fresh start. But maybe the meet-disaster was a sign? Maybe Thea needs to branch out beyond her photography hobby and connect with new people…like at a historical romance book club run by a particularly mysterious and sexy bookseller with a pixie cut? \nFriendly lunches become stolen moments between the bookshelves. Courtney and Thea’s old problems feel eons away. But just as their chemistry heats to a combustion point\, consequences from Courtney’s past arrive literally on her doorstep at exactly the wrong moment. New revelations and surprising connections take the pair from feeling joyfully lovestruck to confusingly star-crossed. Both women must decide what they’re willing to give up for happily ever after. \nAbout the author: Andie Burke specializes in big-hearted queer romcoms that kick-off with meet-disasters rather than meet-cutes. When not writing\, she works as a pediatric radiology nurse. She lives with two small but hilarious humans in a Maryland home filled with an alarming number of books\, ultra-fine point pens\, and dehydrated houseplants. She is the author of Fall for Him as well as Fly with Me\, one of Autostraddle’s Best Queer Books of the Year.

That is until Blanca discovers the enigmatic Smoke in an under-street drug den\, who holds pages to a strange play\, The King in Yellow. Read too much\, and you’ll fall into madness. But read just a little and pull back\, and it gives you the adrenaline rush of survivor’s euphoria\, leading Carmen to fall into a game of lust at a nightmare’s edge. \nAs the line blurs between the world Carmen knows and the one that she visits after reading from the play\, she begins to desire more time in this other world no matter what horrors she brings back with her. \nBram Stoker Award–winning author Hailey Piper masterfully blends horror\, erotica\, and psychological thriller in this captivating and chilling story. \nThe End of The World as We Know It: An original short story anthology based on master storyteller Stephen King’s #1 New York Times bestselling classic The Stand! \nSince its initial publication in 1978\, The Stand has been considered Stephen King’s seminal masterpiece of apocalyptic fiction\, with millions of copies sold and adapted twice for television. Although there are other extraordinary works exploring the unraveling of human society\, none have been as influential as this iconic novel—generations of writers have been impacted by its dark yet ultimately hopeful vision of the end and new beginning of civilization\, and its stunning array of characters. \nNow for the first time\, Stephen King has fully authorized a return to the harrowing world of The Stand through this original short story anthology as presented by award-winning authors and editors Christopher Golden and Brian Keene. Bringing together some of today’s greatest and most visionary writers\, The End of the World As We Know It features unforgettable\, all-new stories set during and after (and some perhaps long after) the events of The Stand—brilliant\, terrifying\, and painfully human tales that will resonate with readers everywhere as an essential companion to the classic\, bestselling novel. \nAbout the author: Hailey Piper is the Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Queen of Teeth\, A Game in Yellow\, All the Hearts You Eat\, and other books of dark fiction. She’s also the author of over 100 short stories appearing in Weird Tales\, The End of the World As We Know It\, and elsewhere\, with non-fiction appearing in Writer’s Digest\, Library Journal\, and more. SUMMARY:Laura Resau: The Alchemy of Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered about the magic it takes to craft a story? Join us on Sunday\, August 10 from 2:00- 3:00 pm at C. Burr Artz Library to hear from Laura Resau as she discusses the writing process behind her latest novel The Alchemy of Flowers. The story follows a woman who takes a unique job in France tending to an ancient garden\, wherein she discovers new friendships and a mystery that will change her life. Following her presentation\, Laura will answer questions and sign books. Copies of The Alchemy of Flowers will be available for purchase at the event. \nThis event is free and open to the public. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nThis event is presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. \nAbout the book: A broken woman. A mysterious job ad. A chance to heal in French castle gardens–but strange things are growing behind the ancient stone walls. This debut adult novel is an enchanting\, modern-day take on The Secret Garden\, sprinkled with magic. Perfect for fans of Sarah Addison Allen. \nHelp Wanted: In search of a gardener for the ancient walled Jardins du Paradis in the South of France. Unique and rustic lodging provided. Off the grid in all ways. One must grow flowers from one’s merde . . . \nExhausted by fruitless attempts to make a family\, Eloise takes the chance of a lifetime to answer an ad in a French gardening magazine. To fly away from her life in the States and tend to both her shattered heart and the flowers of Paradise. And best of all for her . . . \nAbsolutely no children allowed on the premises. \nWithin the high garden walls\, Eloise starts to learn the strange rules of the elusive estate owner. Living and working in isolation with her three companions\, she finds her heart opening again to friendship–and realizes she’s drawn to the handyman\, Raphael. The flowers whisper to her\, enchanting\, delighting\, healing. But why are the workers forbidden from going out during dusk? Who is the “Goddess of the Garden”? Is her mind playing tricks on her\, or does she see a woodsprite flitting through the trees? The giggles and glimpses of a little girl haunt her and make her question: What is real in Paradise and what is illusion? \nEloise tries to rationalize her uneasy feelings and the darkness she uncovers beneath the garden’s lush beauty\, but as she digs deeper into the mysteries of her sanctuary\, she begins to suspect there’s a child on the grounds–who may be in danger. When Paradise becomes a deadly prison\, she must risk everything to protect her newfound family and claim her second chance at happiness. \n“The Alchemy of Flowers captivates the senses as well as the imagination in a magical tale of healing and forgiveness. Resau has written with great heart an eerie yet deeply touching story that keeps the pages turning until the very end.” –Melissa Payne\, bestselling author of In the Beautiful Dark and The Wild Road Home \nAbout the author: Laura Resau is the author of The Alchemy of Flowers\, her debut novel for adults\, and eleven acclaimed books for young people. Her novels won five Colorado Book Awards and appear on best-of book lists from Oprah\, the American Library Association\, and more. Rich has been working with communities for almost 40 years\, and he has proof that social change starts locally. Burr Artz Public Library branch in Downtown Frederick. \nFor accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: The New Civic Path: Restoring Our Belief in One Another and Our Nation \nWe are suffering from a crisis of belief in our country today.  So many people have lost faith in America—in our leaders\,  institutions\, and even one another. The status quo is not  working for far too many of us. Our central task today is to  meet this historic moment. But how do we grow our belief that we can get things done together—not as Republicans  or Democrats or Independents\, but as Americans?  How do we rebuild trust and reclaim agency? \nIn this deeply personal manifesto written while crisscrossing the country for his “Enough. Time Build.” civic campaign\, Richard C. Harwood reveals how we can address the fundamental challenges holding us back in America today. We must dedicate ourselves to forging a new civic path that grows our belief that we can move forward amid our real differences. \nThe New Civic Path is a must-read for those who want to spark civic renewal and get our communities and the country moving again. \nAbout the author: Richard C. Harwood\, President and Founder of The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation\, is an innovator\, author\, and speaker. For 35+ years\, he has devoted his career to revitalizing the nation’s hardest-hit communities\, transforming the world’s largest organizations\, and reconnecting institutions to society. He has been recruited to solve some of the most difficult problems of our time\, including being called into Newtown\, CT\, after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. He has appeared in numerous national media outlets and has written scores of articles\, groundbreaking reports\, and nine books. In 2025\, Rich and the Institute are doubling down on the success of last year’s “Enough. Time to Build.” Campaign with the Campaign for the New Civic Path\, anchored by Rich’s manifesto\, The New Civic Path: Restoring Our Belief in One Another and Our Nation.

SUMMARY:Sarah Adler: Finders Keepers
DESCRIPTION:New book alert! Ready for your next summer romance? On Tuesday\, June 24 at C. Burr Artz Public Library from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm as we celebrate the release of local author Sarah Adler’s latest book Finders Keepers! For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: Two estranged best friends find that a long-abandoned treasure hunt might be the key to a fresh start—for both their futures and their feelings\, from USA Today bestselling author Sarah Adler. \nLast week\, Nina Hunnicutt was a professor about to move into a gorgeous new apartment with her long-term boyfriend. Now\, she’s single\, unemployed\, and living with her parents. Even more surprising is the fact that Quentin Bell\, her childhood neighbor (and okay\, fine\, crush)\, is also back in town—and wants to resume the treasure hunt that ended their friendship almost two decades ago. \nHoping the reward promised to whoever finds the rumored riches left behind by the town’s eccentric turn-of-the-century seltzer magnate will help her get her life back on track\, Nina agrees. Granted\, last time the search resulted in a broken heart and seventeen years of silence. But Nina’s older and wiser now—surely things will be different. \nExcept\, Quentin is also older and wiser…not to mention distractingly handsome. As they resume their hunt\, Nina and Quentin begin to rediscover all the things they once loved best about each other. But unlike the treasure\, the secrets that left them empty-handed the first time refuse to stay buried. If there’s any hope of finding what they’re looking for—and for a future together—Nina and Quentin will have to be brave enough to excavate their past as well. \nAbout the author: USA Today bestselling author Sarah Adler writes romantic comedies about lovable weirdos finding their happily ever afters. She lives in Maryland with her husband\, daughter\, and very mischievous cat. When not working\, you can find her attempting to course-correct an ill-advised late afternoon nap with an equally ill-advised late afternoon coffee\, as she is incapable of ever learning a lesson. \nAbout the moderator: Katie Duggan is a New England transplant currently living in Northern Virginia. She writes romances that give fat\, neurodivergent\, and queer characters spicy happily-ever-afters. When Katie’s not writing or being kept up at night by her characters\, she can be found drinking Doctor Pepper\, going to therapy\, convincing people to read her favorite books\, and doing whatever hobbies give her the most dopamine at the moment.
