SUMMARY:Ray Nayler: Palaces of the Crow + Where the Axe Is Buried
DESCRIPTION:Join Curious Iguana for an exciting evening with science fiction author Ray Nayler on Wednesday\, June 10 from 6:00-7:00 pm at Frederick Book Arts Center. Ray will be discussing his new release\, Palaces of the Crow\, and celebrating the paperback release of Where the Axe Is Buried. His new book follows four children fighting for survival during World War II with the aid of an intelligent group of crows. Following the discussion\, Ray will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Palaces of the Crow and Where the Axe Is Buried will be available for purchase at the event.  \nLocation: Frederick Book Arts Center\, 127 S. Carroll Street\, Frederick\, MD 21701 \nThis event is free and open to the public. We are proud to partner with Frederick Book Arts Center for this event. \nFor accessibility requests\, email events@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout Palaces of the Crow: In Ray Nayler’s speculative novel of the recent past\, four young teens caught between Nazis and the Red Army survive winter in the woods with the help of a flock of highly intelligent crows with a magnificent secret of their own to protect. \nNeriya\, a young Jewish girl who dreams of becoming a biologist\, has befriended a local flock of crows in her shtetl. Czeslaw is an underage Polish soldier who deserts the Red Army and runs into the freezing Lithuanian woods. Kezia is a Roma horse trader whose family is on the run from Soviet collectivization. As the German blitzkrieg crashes across the border in June 1941\, all three are caught up in the onslaught. Along with Innokentiy\, an abandoned boy who cannot speak\, they are driven into the primeval forest\, where they survive by forming an unbreakable bond with one another—and with Neriya’s intelligent crows\, who for years have been bringing her intricate gifts suggesting they are no ordinary corvids. \nAs the war goes on\, the crows warn the children of danger and help them hide from the human threats of the forest—not only the Germans but also Russian deserters\, Polish partisans\, fascist Lithuanian police\, and the other bandits and outcasts wandering the benighted landscape. \nAbout Where the Axe Is Buried: “Roll over\, George Orwell: This post-apocalyptic dystopia makes Airstrip One look like a summer camp . . . A richly detailed evocation of a grim future that is\, sadly\, absolutely believable.” \n—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) \nAll systems fail. All societies crumble. All worlds end. \nIn the authoritarian Federation\, there is a plot to assassinate the President\, a man who has downloaded his mind to a succession of new bodies to maintain his grip on power. Meanwhile\, on the fringes of a Western Europe that has renounced human governance in favor of ostensibly more efficient and peaceful AI Prime Ministers\, an artificial mind is malfunctioning\, threatening to set off a chain of events that may spell the end of the Western world. \nAs the Federation and the West both start to crumble\, Lilia\, the brilliant scientist whose invention may be central to bringing down the seemingly immortal President\, goes on the run\, trying to break out of the vast web of Federation surveillance. Her fate is bound up with those of others fighting the status quo around the world: Palmer\, the man Lilia left behind in London; Zoya\, a veteran activist imprisoned in the taiga\, whose book has inspired a revolutionary movement; Nikolai\, the President’s personal physician\, forced to navigate the Federation’s harrowing palace politics; and Nurlan\, the parliamentary staffer whose attempt to save his Republic goes terribly awry. And Krotov\, head of the Federation’s security services\, whose plots\, agents\, and assassins are everywhere. \nAbout the author: Ray Nayler is the author of the Locus Award-winning novel The Mountain in the Sea and the Hugo Award-winning novella The Tusks of Extinction. Born in Quebec and raised in California\, Ray lived and worked abroad for two decades in Russia\, Central Asia\, the Caucasus\, and the Balkans. \nRay most recently served as international advisor to the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\, and as visiting scholar at the George Washington University’s Institute for International Science and Technology Policy. He lives in Washington\, DC.

SUMMARY:Celeste Dador: Stars\, Stripes\, & Summer Nights
DESCRIPTION:Join Curious Iguana on Saturday\, June 13 at C. Burr Artz Public Library from 2:00-3:00 pm to celebrate YA author Celeste Dador’s debut romance\, Stars\, Stripes\, & Summer Nights. A summer romance is on the horizon for First Daughter Abby Alzona\, who (along with her little sister) has been sent to a countryside inn after unintentionally catching the media’s spotlight. Celeste will be joined in conversation by local YA author Charlene Thomas. After their discussion\, Celeste will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Stars\, Stripes\, & Summer Nights will be available for purchase at the event.\n\n\nThis free\, public event is presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: A swoony\, patriotic romance with Gilmore Girls charm—follow First Daughter Abby as she dives into a summer of surprises\, small-town magic\, and sparks with the boy who shakes up her world. \nWhat if the person who turns your world upside down is exactly who you’re meant to find? \nAll First Daughter Abby Alzona wanted was one normal night. But one impulsive pizza order later\, she’s front-page news—and officially exiled to a Wi-Fi-free country inn for the summer\, along with her little sister Elle. \nThe inn belongs to Gabriel Calabrese’s family: he’s sarcastic\, camera-obsessed\, and definitely not dazzled by presidential perks (also\, kind of the reason for the whole pizza fiasco). But Abby’s determined to make the most of her time away from the White House—with a summer bucket list full of things real teens get to do. Pool parties. Picnics. Maybe even a first kiss. \nAs she and Elle dive into small-town life\, Abby starts to see what makes Gabriel tick. And maybe\, just maybe\, she’s falling for him. . . . \nAbout the author: Celeste Dador writes cozy rom-coms with festive flair. A former reality TV show finalist on America’s Next Great Author\, Celeste lives in the D.C.-area\, where she blends her love of romance and public service into her stories. Stars\, Stripes & Summer Nights is her Young Adult debut. Celeste also serves as an advisor with SCBWI\, a children’s literature community dedicated to helping writers and illustrators bring their stories to the young readers who need them. Like many of her characters\, she’s proudly Filipino American and passionate about inclusive\, joy-filled love stories. When writing adult romance\, which includes a dash of spice\, she uses the pen name C.C. Dador\, including her New Adult romance debut Merry Ex-mas (Requited\, 09/29/26). She can be found in coffee shops and Instagram: @‌celestedador \nAbout the moderator: Charlene Thomas is a critically acclaimed author and writing coach with a passion for helping writers find their voice and create the stories they were meant to tell. Her books have been published by Penguin Random House and Scholastic Press (with more novels forthcoming)\, and have been featured in Parade Magazine\, Book Riot\, Buzz Feed\, Pop Sugar\, Bustle\, The Root\, Kirkus Reviews\, and more. Her work has also received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly. She frequently leads writing workshops\, offers author-talks\, and provides mentorship for aspiring authors. She’s an advocate for democratizing publishing knowledge and is passionate about helping underrepresented perspectives see themselves on bookshelves. SUMMARY:David O. Stewart: The Democracy We Must Keep
DESCRIPTION:In light of America’s 250th birthday this year\, Curious Iguana is eager to welcome historian and author David O. Stewart to Frederick at C. Burr Artz Public Library on Tuesday\, June 16 from 6:00-7:00 pm. David will discuss his latest book\, The Democracy We Must Keep with Holly Smith\, editor-in-chief of the Washington Independent Review of Books. Following their discussion\, David will answer questions and sign books. Copies of The Democracy We Must Keep will be available for purchase at the event.  \nLocation: C. Burr Artz Public Library\, 110 E. Patrick Street\, Frederick\, MD 21701 \nThis event is free and open to the public\, hosted in partnership with the Frederick County Public Library. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: “A great scholar of the American past\, David O. Stewart has brilliantly mined what has come before to guide us in our own\, all-too-urgent American present. An important and timely volume.” ~ Jon Meacham\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The American Struggle \nWhat did America’s founders say about democracy—and can we remain true to their vision for America? \nTwo hundred fifty years ago\, passionate men attempted to create something the world had never seen before: a nation built not on kings or armies\, but on ideas where the people ruled. \nIn The Democracy We Must Keep\, historian David O. Stewart takes readers inside the nine key documents that shaped the formation of the United States—from Patrick Henry’s thunderous cry for liberty to the carefully crafted design of a government chosen by the people\, with limits on all officials holding power under the Constitution. \nThrough the words of seven visionary founders—Washington\, Jefferson\, Madison\, Hamilton\, Gouverneur Morris\, and others—Stewart shows how a fragile experiment in self-government took shape. \nThese men were not saints. They argued passionately. They worried that the new nation might fall apart. Yet together\, they forged the principles that must still define American democracy. \n\nThat power must be limited.\nThat leaders must answer to the people.\nThat individual rights must be protected by law.\n\nAs the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary\, The Democracy We Must Keep urges readers to rediscover core ideas that built the nation—and to consider what it will take to protect them. \nAbout the author: A trial and appellate lawyer for many years\, David O. Stewart now writes history and historical novels. His five narrative histories have won seven awards from literary organizations\, and his five historical novels include best-sellers. In 2023\, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Washington Independent Review of Books\, of which he is the founding president. \nAbout the moderator: Holly Smith is editor-in-chief of the Washington Independent Review of Books\, as well as a college lecturer\, longtime freelance writer\, and proud “Jeopardy!” bronze medalist. Prior to joining the Independent\, she was managing editor of Maryland Life magazine. Her work has appeared in the Washington Post\, CNBC.com \, Salon\, and elsewhere. She also co-authored the travel guide Seafood Lover’s Chesapeake Bay\, which is ironic since she doesn’t eat fish. Find her on Bluesky at @‌HSmithWrites.

SUMMARY:Shannon Sanders: The Great Wherever
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Frederick Book Arts Center on Thursday\, July 9 from 6:00-7:00 pm to celebrate author Shannon Sanders and her latest release\, The Great Wherever. Shannon will be in-conversation with book influencer Morgan Menzies. Following their conversation\, Shannon will answer questions and sign books. Copies of The Great Wherever will be available for purchase at the event.  \nLocation: Frederick Book Arts Center\, 127 S. Carroll Street\, Frederick MD\, 21701 \nThis event is free and open to the public. We are proud to partner with Frederick Book Arts Center for this event. \nFor accessibility requests\, email events@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: The dead are relentless gossips\, or at least these dead are. \nAn impulsive and heartbroken woman inherits her father’s share of a Tennessee farm that is rich in family secrets and occupied with busybody ghosts in this sweeping family portrait. \nAt thirty-two\, Aubrey Lamb is stumbling through adulthood. An underpaid gig worker in Washington\, DC\, she’s grieving the end of a serious relationship and the recent loss of her father. When Aubrey learns she has inherited his stake in a sizable Tennessee farm she sees an opportunity to get out of the city—and to erase a mounting pile of debt. \nWatching her arrival with great interest are four ghosts—Aubrey’s ancestors\, who’ve staked their own claims to the farm and who never hesitate to pass judgment on the mistakes made by the living\, whether romantic\, financial\, or sartorial. As Aubrey reconnects with her living family\, another story unfolds in parallel: the history of the land\, beginning with its purchase by Thomas\, Aubrey’s great-grandfather and one of the first Black landowners in his community. Though Thomas hopes to give his children a homestead on which they could flourish\, the land proves to be a burdensome inheritance. Over the years\, it turns the Lambs against one another\, culminating in a catastrophic tragedy that splinters the family and echoes through the decades. \nNow\, as the clock ticks on a potential sale of the farm\, the ghosts fear expulsion from the home they’ve made\, and Aubrey must weigh the hopes and burdens of her forebears with the very real needs of her future. \nAbout the author: Shannon Sanders is the author of the linked short story collection Company\, which won the 2024 Los Angeles Times Book Prizes’ Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction\, was named one of the best books of 2023 by Publishers Weekly and Debutiful\, and was shortlisted for the 2024 William Saroyan International Prize for Writing. Her short fiction has appeared in numerous publications\, including One Story\, The Sewanee Review\, Virginia Quarterly Review\, and Electric Literature\, and has received a PEN/Robert J. Dau Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers. She lives in Silver Spring\, Maryland\, with her husband and three sons. \n

SUMMARY:Derek Baxter: The Forgotten World War
DESCRIPTION:In light of America’s 250th anniversary\, Curious Iguana is excited to welcome historian and author Derek Baxter to Frederick on Wednesday\, July 22 from 6:00-7:00 pm to speak about his new book\, The Forgotten World War. Focusing on the broader impacts of the American Revolution\, Derek invites readers to consider how this infamous war spanned beyond American soil across the globe. Following his talk\, Derek will answer questions and sign books. Copies of The Forgotten World War will be available for purchase at the event.  \nLocation: C. Burr Artz Public Library\, 110 E. Patrick Street\, Frederick\, MD 21701 \nThis event is free and open to the public. We are proud to partner with Frederick County Public Libraries for this event. \nFor accessibility requests\, email events@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: How well do you truly know the American Revolution? On the 250th anniversary of the establishment of the United States\, author Derek Baxter reveals just how global an effort it was to create a new country. \nForget the Liberty Bell: if you want to truly understand the American Revolution\, get a passport and visit the hills of Andalucia\, the lagoons of the Yucatan\, and the palaces of south India. In The Forgotten World War\, Derek Baxter embarks on an adventure-filled quest across four continents to uncover the story of how Americans really won our independence. He discovers how the fighting in the U.S. was only one theater of a much broader conflict\, in which an unlikely group of nations banded together to take on the mighty British Empire. \nOn the windswept island of Jersey in the English Channel\, he finds out how France attempted a full-scale invasion. At an unlikely Fourth of July party in Spain\, he helps the descendent of a renowned Spanish general make a giant paella. In India\, he investigates one of the greatest victories of the Revolutionary War\, when an army five times as large as any that Washington ever put in the field (and with considerably more elephants) annihilated the Redcoats. Baxter finds the human stories behind this long-ago conflict—sometimes with surprising results.  \nThe Forgotten World War delivers a powerful message\, right in time for our nation’s 250th anniversary. America began only when peoples of different races\, languages\, and religions overcame mistrust and came together.   \nAbout the author: Derek Baxter is a historian\, writer\, and travel storyteller whose work explores the intersection of place\, history\, and personal journey. He is the author of The Forgotten World War: Exploring the Secret History of the American Revolution\, from Spain to India and Back Again and In Pursuit of Jefferson: Traveling through Europe with the Most Perplexing Founding Father\, in which he recounts his journeys through six countries\, armed with a guide written by Jefferson in 1788. He lives with his family in northern Virginia. \n

SUMMARY:Book Release Party with Sarah Adler and Leslie René (TICKETS REQUIRED)
DESCRIPTION:There’s summer romance in the air\, and we are here for it! Join us on Monday\, July 27 at Tenth Ward Distilling Company from 6:00-7:00 pm for a special evening celebrating the latest releases from romance authors Sarah Adler\, Wild Goose Chase\, and Leslie René\, Maggie and Arthur’s Magic Moment. Sarah and Leslie will discuss all things romance\, answer questions\, and sign books. Copies of Wild Good Chase and Maggie & Arthur’s Magic Moment will be available for purchase at this event. Tickets are required and can only be purchased on our website by clicking here. (1) One ticket equals admission for (1) one person to attend Curious Iguana’s book release party for Sarah Adler and Leslie René on Monday\, July 27 at Tenth Ward Distilling Company. Books are not included with the ticket. You can preorder both titles and select ‘pickup’ at checkout to get your book at the event. Preorders will close on July 12.  \nLocation: Tenth Ward Distilling Company\, 55 E Patrick St\, Frederick\, MD 21701 \nAbout the books:  \nWild Goose Chase \nAn antique dealer and his inconvenient(ly irresistible) new colleague must contend with an illicit stuffed goose and their sizzling attraction\, from USA Today bestselling author Sarah Adler. \nAntique store owner Callahan Leitner has an illegal taxidermy goose in his living room. \nWhy? It’s…complicated. \nBut it may end his career unless he finds a legitimate way to dispose of the bird ASAP. Unfortunately\, there’s an unexpected wrench in his plans—the frustrating\, effervescent Annie O’Neill. \nAnnie is happy to fill in for her uncle at his antique store; it’s the perfect opportunity to gain more experience before opening a shop of her own\, and to finally meet his handsome young business partner. Unfortunately\, Cal is nothing like the charming man she expected. She’s tempted to take his apparent dislike personally\, until she stumbles upon the source of his moods: the contraband waterfowl hiding upstairs. \nWhen the goose goes missing\, it puts both of their professional reputations on the line. As Cal and Annie attempt to track down the bird before it can be traced back to the store\, their tentative alliance turns into something much deeper. Will the hunt for their felonious fowl lead to true love\, or end in ruin? \n  \nMaggie & Arthur’s Magic Moment \nA dangerous spell gone wrong forces the passionate professor of incantations to share tight quarters with her magical college’s leading—and most brooding—alchemist. \nDespite the college’s budget cuts that slashed her syllabus\, Linguistics and Incantation Translation professor Maggie Linden has almost made it to the end of the spring semester. To celebrate\, Maggie attends a magical masquerade on Beltane. Maybe the end-of-year frenzy explains why she kissed a masked stranger at the festival\, though her celebration may have come too soon…. \nAn accident in the lab of famous (and famously broody) alchemist Arthur Taliesin sets loose a dangerous\, haunting magic called a pall that renders the nicer parts of their academic building uninhabitable. Maggie is assigned to share her tiny basement office with none other than Taliesin himself. With his insufferable attitude and unfortunate good looks\, Arthur makes it impossible for Maggie to concentrate on anything—her research\, her students’ final exams\, or tracking down her mysterious Beltane suitor. \nShe’ll do anything to get Arthur out of her office\, including offering to help him reverse the magic that threatens the school. But Maggie is starting to realize her officemate may not be the conceited grump he pretends to be. In fact\, much of what she thinks is true about Arthur is merely a mask…. \nAbout the authors:  \nUSA Today bestselling author Sarah Adler writes romantic comedies about lovable weirdos finding their happily ever afters. She lives in Maryland with her husband\, daughter\, and very mischievous cat. When not working\, you can find her attempting to course-correct an ill-advised late afternoon nap with an equally ill-advised late afternoon coffee\, as she is incapable of ever learning a lesson. \nLeslie René is a Virginia-based writer who weaves stories full of magic and yearning. During the day\, she is a science writer and editor. When she isn’t writing\, you can find her going to concerts\, turning yarn and thread into something pretty\, and playing in the garden with her family. \n

SUMMARY:Aggie Blum Thompson: The Neighbors Are Watching
DESCRIPTION:Join Curious Iguana on Friday\, July 31 at Frederick Book Arts Center from 6:00-7:00 pm for a thrilling evening with author Aggie Blum Thompson to celebrate her latest release\, The Neighbors Are Watching. This story focuses on the “perfect” neighbors in the idyllic suburb of Eastbrook\, Bethesda as they work together to expose a killer in their midst. Aggie will be joined in conversation by fellow thriller writer K.T. Nguyen. Following their discussion\, Aggie will answer questions and sign books. Copies of The Neighbors Are Watching will be available for purchase at the event. \nThis event is free and open to the public. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: From the “master of suburban scandal” (Samantha M. Bailey) comes a scandalous twisty thriller about obsession\, betrayal\, and the price of perfection. \nJust outside Washington\, DC\, sits Eastbrook\, Bethesda—a leafy suburb with top schools\, pristine landscapes\, and perfect neighbors. It’s not the kind of place where nannies are shot during robberies gone wrong. And in this picture-perfect neighborhood\, someone is desperate to plaster over the cracks in that façade. \nA year after the unsolved neighborhood murder\, Caren\, nearing fifty and staring down an empty nest\, has one too many drinks at a graduation party and blacks out on her way home. At least\, that’s what everyone says happened. Caren suspects she was drugged by someone. But who? \nWhen Caren teams up with a new neighbor who is desperate to figure out who murdered his best friend last year\, they start to uncover what Eastbrook has tried to forget. But in a place where appearances are everything\, their search for the truth means not only shattering carefully curated perfection — but putting themselves squarely in the crosshairs of a killer. \nAbout the author: Before turning to fiction\, Aggie Blum Thompson covered real-life crime as a newspaper reporter for a number of papers\, including The Boston Globe and The Washington Post. Aggie is a member of Mystery Writers of America. She lives with her husband and two children in the suburbs of Washington DC. \nAbout the moderator: K.T. Nguyen is a former editor at Glamour magazine. Her psychological thriller YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID received the Agatha Award and the Anthony Award for Best First Novel. In a starred review\, Booklist described Nguyen’s novel as “a twisty horror-filled thriller” and an “incredibly compelling debut.” When she’s not writing\, you’ll find K.T. practicing Krav Maga\, watching the Mets\, or playing with her terrier Alice. A graduate of Brown University\, K.T. lives just outside Washington\, D.C.

SUMMARY:Irene W. Leigh: Hiding the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to celebrate local author Irene W. Leigh and her new memoir\, Hiding the Holocaust. Join us at C. Burr Artz Library on Tuesday\, September 1 from 6 pm-7 pm to learn the astounding story of her Jewish parents’ experiences escaping Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. Irene will be in conversation with Sofia Seitchik. Following their talk\, Irene will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Hiding the Holocaust will be available for purchase at the event. \nPlease note: An ASL interpreter will be on hand to provide services as needed. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, presented in partnership with the Frederick County Public Library. For additional accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: From her parents\, deaf psychologist Irene W. Leigh learned how quickly safety could be yanked away. Her parents\, Jews who barely escaped Nazi Germany on the eve of World War II\, tried to shield Leigh from harm\, never talking about the horrors they endured\, and it was not until recently that she began to discover the truth by uncovering a shocking document. Having rebuilt their lives from scratch\, first in England and then in America\, Leigh’s parents passed down a legacy of ambition\, persistence\, and achievement\, shaping her resilience in response to bias and discrimination. In this deeply personal memoir\, Hiding the Holocaust\, Leigh explores how this unspoken history and inherited trauma has informed her personal\, familial\, academic\, and career experiences. Using a lifespan narrative structure focusing on memories\, reflections\, and recreated dialogue\, Leigh narrates the subtle ways in which Holocaust trauma and loss affected not only her parents but also herself as a deaf child\, teen\, adult\, and parent. \nAbout the author: Irene W. Leigh is a clinical psychologist with a distinguished career in research and teaching\, focusing on deaf identity\, parenting\, attachment\, cochlear implants\, assessment\, psychotherapy and counseling.  Leigh is a fellow of the American Psychological Association. She taught in the clinical psychology doctoral program and chaired the Department of Psychology at Gallaudet University\, where she holds the title of Professor Emerita and was selected as a distinguished faculty member. \nAbout the moderator: Sofia Seitchik is a Jewish Deaf entrepreneur\, transformational coach\, and community leader dedicated to creating spaces where people feel seen and connected. She founded Global Deaf Women and is the author of the award-winning book The Light of Deaf Women\, which amplifies the success stories of Deaf women. Sofia serves as Program Director for Hillel at Gallaudet University\, where she strengthens Jewish life and belonging through collaborations and signature events. She is also co-founder of Matanah\, where she guides strategy and relationships to ensure every experience feels intentional\, welcoming\, and culturally grounded.

SUMMARY:Huda Al-Marashi: Hail Mariam
DESCRIPTION:Join Curious Iguana on Thursday\, September 24 from 6:00-7:00 pm at C. Burr Artz Public Library to celebrate the new release from middle-grade author Huda Al-Marashi\, Hail Mariam. Starting middle school is challenging enough\, but when young Muslim Mariam’s sister is diagnosed with a serious lung condition\, Mariam wonders if she’ll have to tackle her concerns about playing Mother Mary in a Christian play on her own. Huda will be in-conversation with fellow middle-grade author Hena Khan. Following their conversation\, Huda will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Hail Mariam will be available for purchase at the event. \nAbout the book: Hail Mariam is an interfaith Muslim take on Are You There God? It’s Me\, Margaret drawn from the author’s own experiences in Catholic school. \nSixth grade wasn’t supposed to be this complicated. \nIraqi American Mariam Hassan transfers to a local Catholic school and before her first day her parents remind her that she might be the first Muslim her classmates have ever met. No big deal\, right? Just represent an entire religion while making new friends\, keeping up with schoolwork\, and figuring out who she is. \nWhen Mariam’s younger sister\, Salma\, is diagnosed with a serious lung condition\, her family faces endless doctor visits and sleepless nights. Mariam tries to lighten their burden and keep her own problems to herself—including the fact that she’s just been cast as Mary in the school’s Christmas nativity play. \nMariam wants to honor her faith and her new community\, but she’s terrified of crossing a religious line. Can a Muslim girl be the lead in a Christian story? What will her family think? And why does she feel like every decision she makes represents all Muslims? \nMariam discovers that faith\, much like friendships\, isn’t about perfection—it’s about connection. As she leans on her family\, friends\, and school community\, she begins to see the power of interfaith cooperation and learns she doesn’t have to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders. \nHail Mariam is a celebration of the beauty of finding common ground. \nAbout the author: Huda Al-Marashi writes for both children and adults. She is the author of the middle grade novel Hail Mariam and a co-author of the Walter Dean Myers Honors award-winning novel Grounded. In addition to her memoir First Comes Marriage: My Not-So-Typical American Love Story\, she has contributed essays and op-eds to various anthologies and news outlets\, such as the New York Times\, Washington Post\, LA Times\, and al Jazeera. She is a fellow and mentor with the Muslim Storytellers Program at Boyds Mill\, formerly known as the Highlights Foundation\, and she lives in San Diego\, California. \nAbout the moderator: Hena Khan has been publishing books for children for over two decades. She writes award-winning picture books\, middle grade fiction\, pick-your-path adventures\, and graphic novels. Her stories are often centered around her culture\, community\, friendship\, and family. Hena’s bestselling novels include Amina’s Voice and More to the Story. She is also the author of the Zayd Saleem Chasing the Dream\, Zara’s Rules\, and Super You! series. Hena’s picture books include Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns and Under My Hijab\, and We Are Big Time is her first graphic novel. Hena lives in her hometown of Rockville\, Maryland.

SUMMARY:Susan Coll: Word Salad
DESCRIPTION:Join Curious Iguana at C. Burr Artz Public Library for a fun evening with bestselling author Susan Coll on Tuesday\, September 29 from 6:00-7:00 pm to celebrate her latest release\, Word Salad! The story follows Matilda as she returns home to D.C. to care for her ailing mother\, takes on a new job at a local bookstore\, and finds herself in the middle of a surprising turn of bookish events. Susan will be in-conversation with Holly Smith\, editor-in-chief of the Washington Independent Review of Books. Following the discussion\, Susan will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Word Salad will be available for purchase at the event. \nLocation: C. Burr Artz Public Library\, 110 E. Patrick Street\, Frederick\, 21701 \nThis event is free and open to the public. We are proud to partner with Frederick County Public Libraries for this event. \nFor accessibility requests\, email events@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: Matilda loves logic and order\, and now her structured world is falling apart—in a bookstore. \nFormer economics major Matilda is moving back to her hometown of Washington D.C. to care for her ailing mother\, and she’s desperate for money. She takes a job at her neighborhood bookstore and tries\, in vain\, to make sense of illogical business of books. To make things worse\, she’s forced to team up with a new hire—the enigmatic\, flaky\, larger-than-life\, Sage—who shows up on her first day of work with zero administrative skills and her tiny\, puffy\, incessantly urinating dog that resembles an underfed rat. \nSomething in the chaos begins to remind Matilda of her long-neglected creative side\, and she starts to rediscover the person she once was before so much got in the way. But things get even more unmanageable when Matilda and Sage are tasked with putting together an event for the reclusive and controversial Dr. Jordan Rutabaga\, a windbag of a public intellectual with a cult following that includes a number of people who would like to literally and figuratively see him dead. Rutabaga has a long list of alleged misdeeds\, from plagiarism to failure to pay child support to stiffing the nanny. \nAs the event date approaches\, Matilda and Sage discover that Sage and Rutabaga have their own not uncomplicated past\, adding yet another person to list of people who do not wish him well. Add in a lawsuit and an impending snowstorm along with the potentially sinister presence of Rutabaga himself\, and Matilda is about to come undone. \nAbout the author: USA Today and Washington Post bestselling writer Susan Coll is the author of eight previous novels\, including The Literati\, Real Life & Other Fictions\, and Bookish People. Her other books include The Stager\, Acceptance\, Rockville Pike\, and Karlmarx.com. Her work has appeared in The Washington Post\, The New York Times\, NPR.org \, The Atlantic.com\, The Millions\, and other publications. Her novel\, Acceptance\, was made into a television movie starring Joan Cusack. Susan is the recipient of multiple grants from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. She works as an event consultant at Politics and Prose Bookstore and was the president of the PEN/Faulkner Foundation for five years. Coll teaches workshops at The Writer’s Center in Bethesda\, Maryland. Her new novel\, WORD SALAD\, will be published by Harper Muse in September 2026.

He’s hot on the trail of the serial killer he blames for his girlfriend’s gruesome death—a trail that will lead directly to Tara. \nAs the eclipse draws near\, Tara finds herself trapped in a game of cat and mouse. To save her own skin\, she must win the trust and ruin the mind of the beguiling and broken boy hunting her\, all the while fighting her feelings for the demon whose secrets threaten everything she’s ever believed about him\, and herself. With Rian getting closer and closer to the truth\, and Thorn warning of vicious consequences if she doesn’t fulfill their bargain\, time is running out to answer the ultimate question: \nIs Tara the predator\, or the prey? \nAbout the author: Jenni Howell is the New York Times-bestselling author of Boys with Sharp Teeth.
