SUMMARY:Amy S. Hansen: Wanda Hears the Stars
DESCRIPTION:Join Curious Iguana at C. Burr Artz Library on Thursday\, March 26 from 4:00-5:00 pm for an event with children’s author Amy S. Hansen. Amy will read her book Wanda Hears the Stars and perform a fun science demonstration! Following her reading\, Amy will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Wanda Hears the Stars will be available for purchase at the event. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, presented in partnership with the Frederick County Public Library. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: A nonfiction picture book biography of astrophysicist Wanda Díaz Merced and how losing her sight didn’t stop her from studying the stars. \nGrowing up in Puerto Rico\, Wanda Díaz Merced wanted to learn everything she could about the stars. But in college she started losing her sight. How could she study what she couldn’t see? \nWanda found a way. She learned to hear the stars using sonification\, which converts data into sounds. Listening to those chimes and drumbeats\, she made new discoveries about the universe. \nToday Wanda is a leading advocate for inclusive science. She and her friend Amy S. Hansen collaborated on this book to inspire children to follow their curiosity no matter the challenges. As Wanda urges\, “Never give up!” \nAbout the author: Amy S. Hansen is an award-winning author of more than than thirty-five books\, most of them about science. She and Wanda met when Wanda first arrived at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Amy was astounded when she tried listening to Wanda’s data! The two friends decided to write a book together to inspire all readers to find a path to success. Amy lives with her family in Maryland.

SUMMARY:L.S. Stratton: Sundown Girls
DESCRIPTION:Calling all young thriller readers! Curious Iguana is excited to welcome bestselling author L.S. Stratton to Urbana Regional Library on Saturday\, March 14 from 2:00-3:00 pm (doors will open at 1:30 pm) to discuss her new YA release\, Sundown Girls! This thrilling story follows Naomi\, a young teen who moves to a small town in Virginia with her family\, only to find that the trauma of the past doesn’t stay hidden forever. L.S. Stratton will discuss her work with local author Charlene Thomas\, then answer questions and sign books. Copies of Sundown Girls will be available for purchase at the event.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public\, presented in partnership with the Frederick County Public Library. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: In the tradition of Jordan Peele and Tiffany Jackson’s The Weight of Blood\, a YA thriller about a Black teen whose fight for survival forces a small southern vacation town to face its dark history of racial violence. \nWhen sixteen-year-old Naomi Ward and her family head to a secluded cabin in the Shenandoah Valley for summer vacation they don’t know the small\, mountain town of Sparksburg\, Virginia has a dark and twisted past. But when they arrive\, Naomi can’t shake the feeling that something about Sparksburg just isn’t right—and it smells god awful\, but for some reason Naomi is the only one who can smell the town’s stench. When she learns Sparksburg had once been a Sundown Town—a town where Black people weren’t allowed after sunset lest they be murdered—Naomi’s unease starts to make sense. \nAs Naomi digs more into Sparksburg’s violent origins\, she finds herself haunted by the ghost of a girl\, appearing nightly outside her window. Then she learns of two girls who’ve recently gone missing and suspects the past may still be present in Sparksburg and beneath the quaint façade of this tourist town is a palpable danger. \nWhen Naomi decides to track the disappearance of the two girls herself\, she becomes suspicious of a local man who has kindled fear in Naomi more than once. She soon learns he has a connection to one of the missing girls\, and Naomi is certain he’s responsible for the disappearances. \nWhen no one believes her\, Naomi takes matters into her own hands. But to save the missing girls\, she’ll have to finally face her own past trauma as a “missing girl” as she finds herself in a fight for survival. \nGripping and triumphant\, L.S. Stratton tells an important and unforgettable story of racial reckoning inspired by historical events. \nAbout the author: L.S Stratton is an NAACP-Image Award-nominated author and former newspaper crime reporter who has written more than thirty books under different pen names in just about every genre from thrillers to romance to historical fiction. She currently lives in Maryland with her husband\, their daughter\, and their tuxedo cat. \nAbout the moderator: Charlene Thomas started writing when she was a little girl because she has a tendency to love telling stories just as much as she loves living them. She was sixteen when she wrote a manuscript that won the National Novel Silver Award from Scholastic Books\, and went on to minor in creative writing at North Carolina State University. Charlene’s debut novel\, Seton Girls\, received a starred review from Publishers Weekly and was deemed “a timely examination of consent\, power\, and who owns the rights to the truth” by Kirkus Reviews. Her sophomore novel\, Streetlight People\, released November 2024 and was deemed “Ray Bradbury-esque” in Publishers Weekly’s starred review. Her third novel\, It’s You Every Time\, released May 2025 and has been featured in Kirkus Reviews and praised by Booklist and School Library Journal. When Charlene isn’t writing\, she’s a marketer – having worked on brands at PepsiCo\, Diageo\, and Danone. She earned her MBA from Emory University\, a Certificate in Digital Marketing from Cornell University\, and a Certificate in Teaching Creative Writing from The University of Cambridge.

Curious Iguana is excited to host TikTok inspiration Oliver James on Wednesday\, March 4 from 6:00-7:00 pm (doors open at 5:30 pm) at Frederick Book Arts Center to discuss his new memoir Unread. Oliver’s book details his journey of learning to read\, which he boldly shared on TikTok; his story continues to inspire many readers and proves the power of reading is invaluable. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event.  \nAbout the book: As a result of childhood learning disabilities and educational neglect\, Oliver James graduated from high school and became one of approximately 45 million functionally illiterate Americans. However\, at age 32\, with big dreams and few tools to actualize them\, he dedicated himself to learning the key skill that had evaded him his entire life: reading. \nOliver has become a TikTok/BookTok sensation for the way he’s candidly documented his decision to learn to read as an adult\, and his struggles and triumphs along the way. Here\, he tells the full story behind his journey for the first time through the 21 key books that shaped and informed his experience. His story reveals the ways in which reading can teach each of us how to be better\, more empathetic people. \nIn just 365 days\, Oliver went from barely being able to read a restaurant menu to closing in on his goal of finishing 100 books in a year. Unread is a moving reminder to all of us that words and stories have power\, and that\, no matter our past\, it’s never too late to grow. \nAbout the author: Oliver James is a California-based personal trainer\, motivational speaker\, literacy activist\, and influencer. He has been featured in or on Today\, NPR\, Jennifer Hudson Show\, Los Angeles Times\, Newsweek\, Rachael Ray\, and ABC News\, among many others. Additionally\, he is the recent recipient of the 2023 Barbara Bush National Literacy Award. He lives in Costa Mesa\, California. \nAbout the moderator: Andrew West is the Development & Outreach Coordinator for the Literacy Council of Frederick County. He had originally become involved with the Literacy Council in the spring of 2024 as a volunteer tutor and was hired as a full-time staff member in March of 2025. SUMMARY:Emily Austin: Is This a Cry For Help?
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Frederick Book Arts Center on Monday\, January 12 from 6:30-7:30 pm for a delightful evening with bestselling author Emily Austin! We’ll be celebrating her latest release\, Is This a Cry For Help?\, a day early! Emily will be in-conversation with local author Andie Burke. This story is about a librarian who\, after experiencing a mental breakdown\, returns to work just as her community’s frustrations over book bans reaches its boiling point. Following her talk\, Emily will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Is This a Cry For Help? will be available for purchase at the event. \nLocation: Frederick Book Arts Center (127 S Carroll St\, Frederick\, MD 21701) \nThis event is free and open to the public. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: The bestselling “queen of darkly quirky\, endearingly flawed heroines” (Sarah Haywood\, author of The Cactus)\, returns with a luminous new novel following a librarian who comes back to work after a mental breakdown only to confront book-banning crusaders in an empowering story of grief\, love\, and the power of libraries. \nDarcy’s life turned out better than she could have ever imagined. She is a librarian at the local branch\, while her wife Joy runs a book binding service. Between the two of them\, there is no more room on their shelves with their ample book collections\, various knickknacks and bobbles\, and dried bouquets. Rounding out their ideal life is two cats and a sun-soaked house by the lake. \nBut when Darcy receives the news that her ex-boyfriend\, Ben\, has passed away\, she spirals into a pit of guilt and regret\, resulting in a mental breakdown and medical leave from the library. When she returns to work\, she is met by unrest in her community and protests surrounding intellectual freedom\, resulting in a call for book bans and a second look at the branch’s upcoming DEI programs. \nThrough the support of her community\, colleagues\, and the personal growth that results from examining her previous relationships\, Darcy comes into her own agency and the truest version of herself. Is This a Cry for Help? not only offers a moving portrait of queer life after coming of age but also powerfully explores questions about sexuality\, community\, and the importance of libraries. \nAbout the author: Emily Austin is the author of We Could Be Rats\, Everyone in This Room Will Someday Be Dead\, Interesting Facts About Space\, and the poetry collection Gay Girl Prayers. She was born in Ontario\, Canada\, and received two writing grants from the Canadian Council for the Arts. She studied English literature and library science at Western University. She currently lives in Ottawa\, in the territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation. \nAbout the moderator: Andie Burke specializes in big-hearted queer romcoms that kick-off with meet-disasters rather than meet-cutes. When not writing\, she works as a pediatric radiology nurse. She lives with two small but hilarious humans in a Maryland home filled with an alarming number of books\, ultra-fine point pens\, and dehydrated houseplants. She is the author of Fall for Him as well as Fly with Me\, one of Autostraddle’s Best Queer Books of the Year.

SUMMARY:Charles Ferguson: Presidential Seclusion
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at C. Burr Artz Public Library on Monday\, November 10\, from 6:00-7:00 pm to hear from author Charles Ferguson as he discusses his new book Presidential Seclusion: The Power of Camp David. This enlightening book shares the little-known impact of this mountain retreat on the nation and the world. Following his presentation\, Charles will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Presidential Seclusion will be available for purchase at the event. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: Behind the gates of Camp David—where presidents find solitude\, forge diplomacy\, and shape history in absolute secrecy. \nThe Presidential Retreat Camp David is shrouded in mystery\, and rightfully so. The hidden retreat atop the Catoctin Mountains is the one place the President\, First Family\, and invited guests can gather in absolute secrecy for relaxation\, rejuvenation\, and world-changing decisions. Because of this dedication to privacy\, and a desire to maintain the mystery and exclusivity of the last bastion of solitude for the President\, few comprehensive accounts exist detailing the storied history of Camp David and the role the “Spirit of Camp David” plays in world affairs. \nPresidential Seclusion provides an exclusive account of the mysterious and storied retreat. Extensively researched from Presidential Archives as well as from the pages of Presidential memoirs\, this non-partisan\, informative account weaves exclusive stories into a tapestry revealing the importance of Camp David on diplomacy and world history. Written by the former Camp David Historian\, this personalized tour of the exclusive retreat makes tree-shrouded trails\, majestic vistas\, and rooms where history happened over the last 80 years accessible to everyone. As you read\, the “Spirit of Camp David” is revealed to infuse everyone who works and visits the President’s private mountain retreat\, mainly how Camp David personally affected its primary guests\, the fifteen First Families fortunate to call the private retreat a second home. \nAbout the author: Charles Ferguson spent three and a half years as the Camp David Historian and Presidential Chaplain. During that time\, he coordinated with 14 Presidential Libraries to better tell the true story of the President’s exclusive mountaintop retreat\, scouring records and memoirs for engaging stories\, providing glimpses into the hidden world of Camp David. Conducting hundreds of tours for personal guests of the President\, his accessible storytelling draws you into the wonders of Camp David as if you are walking the historical private trails with your own personal tour guide. \nHis writings have appeared on the Faith and Leadership website and in The Presbyterian Outlook\, Presbyterians Today\, and the United States Naval Institute’s Proceedings magazine.

SUMMARY:Richard and W.H. Chizmar: Widow’s Point
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, October 10\, from 6:00-7:30pm\, please join us at the Frederick Book Arts Center as we welcome bestselling horror author Richard Chizmar and his son\, W.H. Chizmar for a night of chilling discussion of their latest novel Widow’s Point. This novel centers on an abandoned lighthouse where thrill seekers come to find evidence of the supernatural but soon realize all is not what it seems in the “cursed” place. After their conversation\, Richard and W.H. Chizmar will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Widow’s Point will be available for purchase at the event. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, presented in partnership with the Frederick Book Arts Center. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: New York Times bestselling author Richard Chizmar\, “one of horror’s indispensable writers” (Paste)\, and his son W.H. Chizmar\, critically acclaimed author of Them (hailed by New York Times bestselling author Josh Malerman as “one of the best debuts I’ve ever read”) present a riveting found footage narrative about doomed thrill-seekers trapped in a haunted lighthouse. \n“This is a bad place. I don’t think people are meant to live here.” \nLongtime residents of Harper’s Cove believe that something is wrong with the Widow’s Point Lighthouse. Some say it’s cursed. Others claim it’s haunted. \nOriginally built in 1838\, three workers were killed during the lighthouse’s construction\, including one who mysteriously plunged to his death from the catwalk. That tragic accident was never explained\, and it was just the beginning of the terror. In the decades that followed\, nearly two dozen additional deaths occurred in or around the lighthouse including cold-blooded murder\, suicide\, unexplained accidents and disappearances\, the slaughter of an entire family\, and the inexplicable death of a Hollywood starlet who was filming a movie on the grounds. \nThe lighthouse was finally shuttered tight in 1988 and a security fence was erected around the property. No one has been inside since. Until now. \nTold across two harrowing incidents from 2017 and 2025\, those who enter the Widow’s Point Lighthouse searching for supernatural proof and the next big thing find themselves cut off from the outside world. And although no one has recently stepped foot inside the structure\, they are not alone. \nIn this remarkable collaboration\, father and son writing team\, Richard and W.H. Chizmar combine forces to tell a terrifying ghost story that will make you think twice about what’s waiting for you in the dark. \nAbout the authors: \nRichard Chizmar is the coauthor (with Stephen King) of the New York Times bestselling novella Gwendy’s Button Box and Gwendy’s Final Task\, and the solo novella Gwendy’s Magic Feather. Recent books include the New York Times bestsellers Memorials\, Becoming the Boogeyman\, and Chasing the Boogeyman; The Girl on the Porch; The Long Way Home; his fourth short story collection\, and Widow’s Point; a chilling tale about a haunted lighthouse cowritten with his son Billy Chizmar\, which was recently made into a feature film. His short fiction has appeared in dozens of publications\, including Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and The Year’s 25 Finest Crime and Mystery Stories. He has won two World Fantasy awards\, four International Horror Guild awards\, and the HWA’s Board of Trustees award. Chizmar’s work has been translated into more than fifteen languages throughout the world\, and he has appeared at numerous conferences as a writing instructor\, speaker\, panelist\, and guest of honor. Follow him on X\, Facebook\, Instagram\, Threads\, and Bluesky: @‌RichardChizmar\, or visit his website at RichardChizmar.com. \nW. H. Chizmar is the author of numerous short stories and essays. His debut novel Them is coming soon from Gallery Books and as a limited edition from Lividian Publications. Chizmar lives in Maryland with his Bernese Mountain Dog\, J.J. (short for James Joyce).

DESCRIPTION:Please join us at C. Burr Artz Library on Tuesday\, September 16 from 6:00-7:00 pm to celebrate all things “sapphic bookstore romance” with us and local author Andie Burke! Andie will be discussing her latest novel\, With Stars in Her Eyes\, with local book club host Stephanie Jenks. This story centers on love found in the most bookish of places; when cellist Courtney returns home for a respite from a botched performance and spiraling rumors\, she stumbles into love with a newcomer looking for a fresh start… who happens to work in the tattoo shop next door to Courtney’s best friend’s bookshop. After her conversation\, Andie will answer questions and sign books. \nCopies of With Stars in Her Eyes will be available for purchase at the event but you can preorder signed and personalized copies ahead of time on our website here. \n*Include personalization requests in the notes field at checkout and select “Pick Up” if you’d like to pick it up at the event or shipping if you cannot attend. \n  \nThis free\, public event is presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: A swoon-worthy sapphic bookstore romance about fresh starts and finding that one person who feels like home from breakout author Andie Burke (Fly with Me). \nSeconds from a meteoric career launch\, cellist Courtney Starling suffers a frightening migraine attack during a key performance. While harmful rumors fly\, she escapes to her happy place—her best friend’s Kansas bookshop. Courtney’s working incognito when a scream sends her leaping off a shelving ladder to find the woman who screamed cowering near the register. \nWhen Thea Quinn dropped in for a misdelivered package\, she did not expect a mortifying encounter with a bearded dragon in front of an inconveniently attractive bookseller. Clutching an upcoming book club flyer and the tattered shreds of her dignity\, she heads back to her new piercing job at the tattoo shop next door. She moved to this quirky place for a fresh start. But maybe the meet-disaster was a sign? Maybe Thea needs to branch out beyond her photography hobby and connect with new people…like at a historical romance book club run by a particularly mysterious and sexy bookseller with a pixie cut? \nFriendly lunches become stolen moments between the bookshelves. Courtney and Thea’s old problems feel eons away. But just as their chemistry heats to a combustion point\, consequences from Courtney’s past arrive literally on her doorstep at exactly the wrong moment. New revelations and surprising connections take the pair from feeling joyfully lovestruck to confusingly star-crossed. Both women must decide what they’re willing to give up for happily ever after. \nAbout the author: Andie Burke specializes in big-hearted queer romcoms that kick-off with meet-disasters rather than meet-cutes.

SUMMARY:Lacey N. Dunham: The Belles
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Curious Iguana from 6:00-7:00 pm on Friday\, September 12 for a meet-and-greet with author Lacey N. Dunham as she promotes her debut novel\, The Belles. This dark\, coming-of-age story centers on an exclusive clique that tests the boundaries in risky ways as they navigate their way through college in the 1950s. Copies of The Belles will be available for purchase at the signing. \nThis event is free and open to the public. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: In this richly atmospheric\, dark academia debut novel\, a young woman with a secretive past will risk everything—including her life—to fit in. \nBelles never tell… \nIt’s 1951 at the secluded Bellerton College\, and Deena Williams is an outsider doing her best to blend in with her wealthy and perfectly groomed peers. Infamous for its strict rules as much as its prestige\, attending Bellerton could give Deena the comfortable life she’s always dreamed of. \nShe quickly forms an alliance with the five other freshmen on her floor\, and soon they are singled out by the president’s wife as the most promising girls of their class\, who anoints them: The Belles. They walk the college’s halls in menacing unison\, matching velvet ribbons in their hair. But no sisterhood comes without secrets\, and the Belles are no exception. Playing cruel pranks on their dormitory housemother and embarking on boundary-shattering night games\, the Belles test the limits of the campus rules. \nBut as Deena begins to piece together the sinister history of Bellerton\, her own past threatens to come to light\, forcing her to make a dangerous choice. A chilling and seductive coming-of-age story\, The Belles is an excavation of the dark side of girlhood\, the intricacies of privilege\, and the unbridled desire to belong at any cost. \nAbout the author: Lacey N. Dunham is the author of The Belles. She has received support from the Elizabeth George Foundation\, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities\, the Sewanee Writers Conference as a Tennessee Williams scholar\, and Catapult as a merit scholar. Her writing has appeared in Ploughshares\, The Kenyon Review\, and more. She lives in Washington\, DC. Find out more at http://LaceyNDunham.com .

Lonely and bearing the brunt of her mother’s endless grievances\, Ellie dreams for a friend to alleviate her isolation. \nLuckily\, on the first day of school\, she meets Homa\, a kind girl with a brave and irrepressible spirit. Together\, the two girls play games\, learn to cook in the stone kitchen of Homa’s warm home\, wander through the colorful stalls of the Grand Bazaar\, and share their ambitions of becoming “lion women.” \nBut their happiness is disrupted when Ellie and her mother are afforded the opportunity to return to their previous bourgeois life. Now a popular student at the best girls’ high school in Iran\, Ellie’s memories of Homa begin to fade. Years later\, however\, her sudden reappearance in Ellie’s privileged world alters the course of both of their lives. \nTogether\, the two young women come of age and pursue their own goals for meaningful futures. But as the political turmoil in Iran builds to a breaking point\, one earth-shattering betrayal will have enormous consequences. \n“Reminiscent of The Kite Runner and My Brilliant Friend\, The Lion Women of Tehran is a mesmerizing tale” (BookPage) of love and courage\, and a sweeping exploration of how profoundly we are shaped by those we meet when we are young. \nAbout the author: Marjan Kamali\, born in Turkey to Iranian parents\, spent her childhood in Kenya\, Germany\, Turkey\, Iran\, and the United States. SUMMARY:Mike Tidwell: The Lost Trees of Willow Avenue
DESCRIPTION:Please join us Wednesday\, April 2 from 6:30-7:30 pm at the Frederick Book Arts Center for an evening with author Mike Tidwell. Mike will discuss his new novel The Lost Trees of Willow Avenue\, which shares his perspective of the impacts of climate change on his own street near Washington D.C. Following his presentation\, Mike will answer questions and sign books. Copies of The Lost Trees of Willow Avenue will be available for purchase at the event. \nThis event is free and open to the public. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: In 2023\, author and activist Mike Tidwell decided to keep a record for a full year of the growing impacts of climate change on his one urban block right on the border with Washington\, DC. A love letter to the magnificent oaks and other trees dying from record heat waves and bizarre rain\, Tidwell’s story depicts the neighborhood’s battle to save the trees and combat climate change: The midwife who builds a geothermal energy system on the block\, the Congressman who battles cancer and climate change at the same time\, and the Chinese-American climate scientist who wants to bury billions of the world’s dying trees to store their carbon and help stabilize the atmosphere. \nThe story goes beyond ailing trees as Tidwell chronicles people on his block sick with Lyme disease\, a church struggling with floods\, and young people anguishing over whether to have kids\, all in the same neighborhood and all against the global backdrop of 2023’s record heat domes and raging wildfires and hurricanes. Then there’s Tidwell himself who explores the ethical and scientific questions surrounding the idea of “geoengineering” as a last-ditch way to save the world’s trees – and human communities everywhere – by reflecting sunlight away from the planet. No book has told the story of climate change this way: hyper local\, full of surprises\, full of true stories of life and death in one neighborhood. The Lost Trees of Willow Avenue is a harrowing and hopeful proxy for every street in America and every place on Earth. \nAbout the author: Mike is a writer and climate activist. His previous six books include Bayou Farewell (2003) about the disappearing wetlands in south Louisiana. As a contributing writer for The Washington Post\, he has won four Lowell Thomas Awards\, the highest prize in American travel journalism. In 2002 he founded the Chesapeake Climate Action Network\, where he has led local and national campaigns for clean energy. He lives on Willow Avenue in Takoma Park with his wife Beth and their cat Macy Gray.

After spending the day visiting schools\, Bob will be at the Iguana in the evening to meet fans and sign books! \nThis event is free and open to the public. Hilarity ensues as Bearsuit Turtle proves he can climb trees\, hibernate\, and do other for-real bear stuff . . . like riding bikes\, eating ice cream\, and smashing pumpkins.
