SUMMARY:Celeste Dador: Stars\, Stripes\, & Summer Nights
DESCRIPTION:Join Curious Iguana on Saturday\, June 13 at C. Burr Artz Public Library from 2:00-3:00 pm to celebrate YA author Celeste Dador’s debut romance\, Stars\, Stripes\, & Summer Nights. A summer romance is on the horizon for First Daughter Abby Alzona\, who (along with her little sister) has been sent to a countryside inn after unintentionally catching the media’s spotlight. Celeste will be joined in conversation by local YA author Charlene Thomas. After their discussion\, Celeste will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Stars\, Stripes\, & Summer Nights will be available for purchase at the event.\n\n\nThis free\, public event is presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: A swoony\, patriotic romance with Gilmore Girls charm—follow First Daughter Abby as she dives into a summer of surprises\, small-town magic\, and sparks with the boy who shakes up her world. \nWhat if the person who turns your world upside down is exactly who you’re meant to find? \nAll First Daughter Abby Alzona wanted was one normal night. But one impulsive pizza order later\, she’s front-page news—and officially exiled to a Wi-Fi-free country inn for the summer\, along with her little sister Elle. \nThe inn belongs to Gabriel Calabrese’s family: he’s sarcastic\, camera-obsessed\, and definitely not dazzled by presidential perks (also\, kind of the reason for the whole pizza fiasco). But Abby’s determined to make the most of her time away from the White House—with a summer bucket list full of things real teens get to do. Pool parties. Picnics. Maybe even a first kiss. \nAs she and Elle dive into small-town life\, Abby starts to see what makes Gabriel tick. And maybe\, just maybe\, she’s falling for him. . . . \nAbout the author: Celeste Dador writes cozy rom-coms with festive flair. A former reality TV show finalist on America’s Next Great Author\, Celeste lives in the D.C.-area\, where she blends her love of romance and public service into her stories. Stars\, Stripes & Summer Nights is her Young Adult debut. Celeste also serves as an advisor with SCBWI\, a children’s literature community dedicated to helping writers and illustrators bring their stories to the young readers who need them. Like many of her characters\, she’s proudly Filipino American and passionate about inclusive\, joy-filled love stories. When writing adult romance\, which includes a dash of spice\, she uses the pen name C.C. Dador\, including her New Adult romance debut Merry Ex-mas (Requited\, 09/29/26). She can be found in coffee shops and Instagram: @‌celestedador \nAbout the moderator: Charlene Thomas is a critically acclaimed author and writing coach with a passion for helping writers find their voice and create the stories they were meant to tell. Her books have been published by Penguin Random House and Scholastic Press (with more novels forthcoming)\, and have been featured in Parade Magazine\, Book Riot\, Buzz Feed\, Pop Sugar\, Bustle\, The Root\, Kirkus Reviews\, and more. Her work has also received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly. She frequently leads writing workshops\, offers author-talks\, and provides mentorship for aspiring authors. She’s an advocate for democratizing publishing knowledge and is passionate about helping underrepresented perspectives see themselves on bookshelves. IT’S YOU EVERY TIME\, a young adult romance\, is her latest novel.

SUMMARY:Ray Nayler: Palaces of the Crow + Where the Axe Is Buried
DESCRIPTION:Join Curious Iguana for an exciting evening with science fiction author Ray Nayler on Wednesday\, June 10 from 6:00-7:00 pm at Frederick Book Arts Center. Ray will be discussing his new release\, Palaces of the Crow\, and celebrating the paperback release of Where the Axe Is Buried. His new book follows four children fighting for survival during World War II with the aid of an intelligent group of crows. Following the discussion\, Ray will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Palaces of the Crow and Where the Axe Is Buried will be available for purchase at the event.  \nLocation: Frederick Book Arts Center\, 127 S. Carroll Street\, Frederick\, MD 21701 \nThis event is free and open to the public. We are proud to partner with Frederick Book Arts Center for this event. \nFor accessibility requests\, email events@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout Palaces of the Crow: In Ray Nayler’s speculative novel of the recent past\, four young teens caught between Nazis and the Red Army survive winter in the woods with the help of a flock of highly intelligent crows with a magnificent secret of their own to protect. \nNeriya\, a young Jewish girl who dreams of becoming a biologist\, has befriended a local flock of crows in her shtetl. Czeslaw is an underage Polish soldier who deserts the Red Army and runs into the freezing Lithuanian woods. Kezia is a Roma horse trader whose family is on the run from Soviet collectivization. As the German blitzkrieg crashes across the border in June 1941\, all three are caught up in the onslaught. Along with Innokentiy\, an abandoned boy who cannot speak\, they are driven into the primeval forest\, where they survive by forming an unbreakable bond with one another—and with Neriya’s intelligent crows\, who for years have been bringing her intricate gifts suggesting they are no ordinary corvids. \nAs the war goes on\, the crows warn the children of danger and help them hide from the human threats of the forest—not only the Germans but also Russian deserters\, Polish partisans\, fascist Lithuanian police\, and the other bandits and outcasts wandering the benighted landscape. \nAbout Where the Axe Is Buried: “Roll over\, George Orwell: This post-apocalyptic dystopia makes Airstrip One look like a summer camp . . . A richly detailed evocation of a grim future that is\, sadly\, absolutely believable.” \n—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) \nAll systems fail. All societies crumble. All worlds end. \nIn the authoritarian Federation\, there is a plot to assassinate the President\, a man who has downloaded his mind to a succession of new bodies to maintain his grip on power. Meanwhile\, on the fringes of a Western Europe that has renounced human governance in favor of ostensibly more efficient and peaceful AI Prime Ministers\, an artificial mind is malfunctioning\, threatening to set off a chain of events that may spell the end of the Western world. \nAs the Federation and the West both start to crumble\, Lilia\, the brilliant scientist whose invention may be central to bringing down the seemingly immortal President\, goes on the run\, trying to break out of the vast web of Federation surveillance. Her fate is bound up with those of others fighting the status quo around the world: Palmer\, the man Lilia left behind in London; Zoya\, a veteran activist imprisoned in the taiga\, whose book has inspired a revolutionary movement; Nikolai\, the President’s personal physician\, forced to navigate the Federation’s harrowing palace politics; and Nurlan\, the parliamentary staffer whose attempt to save his Republic goes terribly awry. And Krotov\, head of the Federation’s security services\, whose plots\, agents\, and assassins are everywhere. \nAbout the author: Ray Nayler is the author of the Locus Award-winning novel The Mountain in the Sea and the Hugo Award-winning novella The Tusks of Extinction. Born in Quebec and raised in California\, Ray lived and worked abroad for two decades in Russia\, Central Asia\, the Caucasus\, and the Balkans. \nRay most recently served as international advisor to the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\, and as visiting scholar at the George Washington University’s Institute for International Science and Technology Policy. He lives in Washington\, DC.

Magic\, adventure\, romance\, and horror collide in this lush\, epic\, Ancient Egyptian inspired trilogy perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo\, Tahereh Mafi\, and Sabaa Tahir. \nFresh to the throne\, the cunning new pharaoh schemes to bring unprecedented power to the Kingdom of Khetara. Having witnessed the king’s merciless acts\, Neff furtively plots to free the kingdom from his grip\, though she knows the heavy price of treason. \nMeanwhile\, the rebellion in Low Khetara grows\, and Raetawy\, a courageous farm girl\, leads the resistance. Her quest is clear: infiltrate the capital and free the imprisoned rebels—including her beloved father. Yet in her desperation\, Rae agrees to a plan that could destroy all she is fighting for…. \nIn the Red Lands\, the thief Karim grapples with the new life he’s been given. SUMMARY:L.S. Stratton: Sundown Girls
DESCRIPTION:Calling all young thriller readers! Curious Iguana is excited to welcome bestselling author L.S. Stratton to Urbana Regional Library on Saturday\, March 14 from 2:00-3:00 pm (doors will open at 1:30 pm) to discuss her new YA release\, Sundown Girls! This thrilling story follows Naomi\, a young teen who moves to a small town in Virginia with her family\, only to find that the trauma of the past doesn’t stay hidden forever. L.S. Stratton will discuss her work with local author Charlene Thomas\, then answer questions and sign books. Copies of Sundown Girls will be available for purchase at the event.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public\, presented in partnership with the Frederick County Public Library. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: In the tradition of Jordan Peele and Tiffany Jackson’s The Weight of Blood\, a YA thriller about a Black teen whose fight for survival forces a small southern vacation town to face its dark history of racial violence. \nWhen sixteen-year-old Naomi Ward and her family head to a secluded cabin in the Shenandoah Valley for summer vacation they don’t know the small\, mountain town of Sparksburg\, Virginia has a dark and twisted past. But when they arrive\, Naomi can’t shake the feeling that something about Sparksburg just isn’t right—and it smells god awful\, but for some reason Naomi is the only one who can smell the town’s stench. When she learns Sparksburg had once been a Sundown Town—a town where Black people weren’t allowed after sunset lest they be murdered—Naomi’s unease starts to make sense. \nAs Naomi digs more into Sparksburg’s violent origins\, she finds herself haunted by the ghost of a girl\, appearing nightly outside her window. Then she learns of two girls who’ve recently gone missing and suspects the past may still be present in Sparksburg and beneath the quaint façade of this tourist town is a palpable danger. \nWhen Naomi decides to track the disappearance of the two girls herself\, she becomes suspicious of a local man who has kindled fear in Naomi more than once. She soon learns he has a connection to one of the missing girls\, and Naomi is certain he’s responsible for the disappearances. \nWhen no one believes her\, Naomi takes matters into her own hands. But to save the missing girls\, she’ll have to finally face her own past trauma as a “missing girl” as she finds herself in a fight for survival. \nGripping and triumphant\, L.S. Stratton tells an important and unforgettable story of racial reckoning inspired by historical events. \nAbout the author: L.S Stratton is an NAACP-Image Award-nominated author and former newspaper crime reporter who has written more than thirty books under different pen names in just about every genre from thrillers to romance to historical fiction. She currently lives in Maryland with her husband\, their daughter\, and their tuxedo cat. \nAbout the moderator: Charlene Thomas started writing when she was a little girl because she has a tendency to love telling stories just as much as she loves living them. She was sixteen when she wrote a manuscript that won the National Novel Silver Award from Scholastic Books\, and went on to minor in creative writing at North Carolina State University. Charlene’s debut novel\, Seton Girls\, received a starred review from Publishers Weekly and was deemed “a timely examination of consent\, power\, and who owns the rights to the truth” by Kirkus Reviews. Her sophomore novel\, Streetlight People\, released November 2024 and was deemed “Ray Bradbury-esque” in Publishers Weekly’s starred review. Her third novel\, It’s You Every Time\, released May 2025 and has been featured in Kirkus Reviews and praised by Booklist and School Library Journal. When Charlene isn’t writing\, she’s a marketer – having worked on brands at PepsiCo\, Diageo\, and Danone. She earned her MBA from Emory University\, a Certificate in Digital Marketing from Cornell University\, and a Certificate in Teaching Creative Writing from The University of Cambridge.

His story reveals the ways in which reading can teach each of us how to be better\, more empathetic people. \nIn just 365 days\, Oliver went from barely being able to read a restaurant menu to closing in on his goal of finishing 100 books in a year. SUMMARY:Emily Austin: Is This a Cry For Help?
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Frederick Book Arts Center on Monday\, January 12 from 6:30-7:30 pm for a delightful evening with bestselling author Emily Austin! We’ll be celebrating her latest release\, Is This a Cry For Help?\, a day early! Emily will be in-conversation with local author Andie Burke. This story is about a librarian who\, after experiencing a mental breakdown\, returns to work just as her community’s frustrations over book bans reaches its boiling point. Following her talk\, Emily will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Is This a Cry For Help? will be available for purchase at the event. \nLocation: Frederick Book Arts Center (127 S Carroll St\, Frederick\, MD 21701) \nThis event is free and open to the public. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: The bestselling “queen of darkly quirky\, endearingly flawed heroines” (Sarah Haywood\, author of The Cactus)\, returns with a luminous new novel following a librarian who comes back to work after a mental breakdown only to confront book-banning crusaders in an empowering story of grief\, love\, and the power of libraries. \nDarcy’s life turned out better than she could have ever imagined. She is a librarian at the local branch\, while her wife Joy runs a book binding service. Between the two of them\, there is no more room on their shelves with their ample book collections\, various knickknacks and bobbles\, and dried bouquets. Rounding out their ideal life is two cats and a sun-soaked house by the lake. \nBut when Darcy receives the news that her ex-boyfriend\, Ben\, has passed away\, she spirals into a pit of guilt and regret\, resulting in a mental breakdown and medical leave from the library. When she returns to work\, she is met by unrest in her community and protests surrounding intellectual freedom\, resulting in a call for book bans and a second look at the branch’s upcoming DEI programs. \nThrough the support of her community\, colleagues\, and the personal growth that results from examining her previous relationships\, Darcy comes into her own agency and the truest version of herself. Is This a Cry for Help? not only offers a moving portrait of queer life after coming of age but also powerfully explores questions about sexuality\, community\, and the importance of libraries. \nAbout the author: Emily Austin is the author of We Could Be Rats\, Everyone in This Room Will Someday Be Dead\, Interesting Facts About Space\, and the poetry collection Gay Girl Prayers. She was born in Ontario\, Canada\, and received two writing grants from the Canadian Council for the Arts. She studied English literature and library science at Western University. She currently lives in Ottawa\, in the territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation. \nAbout the moderator: Andie Burke specializes in big-hearted queer romcoms that kick-off with meet-disasters rather than meet-cutes. When not writing\, she works as a pediatric radiology nurse. She lives with two small but hilarious humans in a Maryland home filled with an alarming number of books\, ultra-fine point pens\, and dehydrated houseplants. She is the author of Fall for Him as well as Fly with Me\, one of Autostraddle’s Best Queer Books of the Year.

SUMMARY:Charles Ferguson: Presidential Seclusion
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at C. Burr Artz Public Library on Monday\, November 10\, from 6:00-7:00 pm to hear from author Charles Ferguson as he discusses his new book Presidential Seclusion: The Power of Camp David. This enlightening book shares the little-known impact of this mountain retreat on the nation and the world. Following his presentation\, Charles will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Presidential Seclusion will be available for purchase at the event. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: Behind the gates of Camp David—where presidents find solitude\, forge diplomacy\, and shape history in absolute secrecy. \nThe Presidential Retreat Camp David is shrouded in mystery\, and rightfully so. The hidden retreat atop the Catoctin Mountains is the one place the President\, First Family\, and invited guests can gather in absolute secrecy for relaxation\, rejuvenation\, and world-changing decisions. Because of this dedication to privacy\, and a desire to maintain the mystery and exclusivity of the last bastion of solitude for the President\, few comprehensive accounts exist detailing the storied history of Camp David and the role the “Spirit of Camp David” plays in world affairs. \nPresidential Seclusion provides an exclusive account of the mysterious and storied retreat. Extensively researched from Presidential Archives as well as from the pages of Presidential memoirs\, this non-partisan\, informative account weaves exclusive stories into a tapestry revealing the importance of Camp David on diplomacy and world history. Written by the former Camp David Historian\, this personalized tour of the exclusive retreat makes tree-shrouded trails\, majestic vistas\, and rooms where history happened over the last 80 years accessible to everyone. As you read\, the “Spirit of Camp David” is revealed to infuse everyone who works and visits the President’s private mountain retreat\, mainly how Camp David personally affected its primary guests\, the fifteen First Families fortunate to call the private retreat a second home. \nAbout the author: Charles Ferguson spent three and a half years as the Camp David Historian and Presidential Chaplain. During that time\, he coordinated with 14 Presidential Libraries to better tell the true story of the President’s exclusive mountaintop retreat\, scouring records and memoirs for engaging stories\, providing glimpses into the hidden world of Camp David. Conducting hundreds of tours for personal guests of the President\, his accessible storytelling draws you into the wonders of Camp David as if you are walking the historical private trails with your own personal tour guide. \nHis writings have appeared on the Faith and Leadership website and in The Presbyterian Outlook\, Presbyterians Today\, and the United States Naval Institute’s Proceedings magazine.

SUMMARY:Richard and W.H. Chizmar: Widow’s Point
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, October 10\, from 6:00-7:30pm\, please join us at the Frederick Book Arts Center as we welcome bestselling horror author Richard Chizmar and his son\, W.H. Chizmar for a night of chilling discussion of their latest novel Widow’s Point. This novel centers on an abandoned lighthouse where thrill seekers come to find evidence of the supernatural but soon realize all is not what it seems in the “cursed” place. After their conversation\, Richard and W.H. Chizmar will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Widow’s Point will be available for purchase at the event. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, presented in partnership with the Frederick Book Arts Center. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: New York Times bestselling author Richard Chizmar\, “one of horror’s indispensable writers” (Paste)\, and his son W.H. Chizmar\, critically acclaimed author of Them (hailed by New York Times bestselling author Josh Malerman as “one of the best debuts I’ve ever read”) present a riveting found footage narrative about doomed thrill-seekers trapped in a haunted lighthouse. \n“This is a bad place. I don’t think people are meant to live here.” \nLongtime residents of Harper’s Cove believe that something is wrong with the Widow’s Point Lighthouse. Some say it’s cursed. Others claim it’s haunted. \nOriginally built in 1838\, three workers were killed during the lighthouse’s construction\, including one who mysteriously plunged to his death from the catwalk. That tragic accident was never explained\, and it was just the beginning of the terror. In the decades that followed\, nearly two dozen additional deaths occurred in or around the lighthouse including cold-blooded murder\, suicide\, unexplained accidents and disappearances\, the slaughter of an entire family\, and the inexplicable death of a Hollywood starlet who was filming a movie on the grounds. \nThe lighthouse was finally shuttered tight in 1988 and a security fence was erected around the property. No one has been inside since. Until now. \nTold across two harrowing incidents from 2017 and 2025\, those who enter the Widow’s Point Lighthouse searching for supernatural proof and the next big thing find themselves cut off from the outside world. And although no one has recently stepped foot inside the structure\, they are not alone. \nIn this remarkable collaboration\, father and son writing team\, Richard and W.H. Chizmar combine forces to tell a terrifying ghost story that will make you think twice about what’s waiting for you in the dark. \nAbout the authors: \nRichard Chizmar is the coauthor (with Stephen King) of the New York Times bestselling novella Gwendy’s Button Box and Gwendy’s Final Task\, and the solo novella Gwendy’s Magic Feather. Recent books include the New York Times bestsellers Memorials\, Becoming the Boogeyman\, and Chasing the Boogeyman; The Girl on the Porch; The Long Way Home; his fourth short story collection\, and Widow’s Point; a chilling tale about a haunted lighthouse cowritten with his son Billy Chizmar\, which was recently made into a feature film. His short fiction has appeared in dozens of publications\, including Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and The Year’s 25 Finest Crime and Mystery Stories. He has won two World Fantasy awards\, four International Horror Guild awards\, and the HWA’s Board of Trustees award. Chizmar’s work has been translated into more than fifteen languages throughout the world\, and he has appeared at numerous conferences as a writing instructor\, speaker\, panelist\, and guest of honor. Follow him on X\, Facebook\, Instagram\, Threads\, and Bluesky: @‌RichardChizmar\, or visit his website at RichardChizmar.com. \nW. H. Chizmar is the author of numerous short stories and essays. His debut novel Them is coming soon from Gallery Books and as a limited edition from Lividian Publications. Chizmar lives in Maryland with his Bernese Mountain Dog\, J.J. (short for James Joyce).
