Curious Iguana is a small bookstore with a big heart and even bigger ideas about how books can be a powerful tool for change.

As a benefit corporation*, Curious Iguana donates a portion of our monthly book sales to a variety of nonprofits. We carefully vet the organizations we support and are honored to be part of their achievements. 

Did you know?

Thanks to our fabulous customers, we were able to donate more than $18,000 to local and regional nonprofits and more than $3000 in in-kind contributions in 2024. So far in 2025, we’ve been able to donate over $6,000 to local nonprofits in our effort to give back directly to our community. View our Q1 Giving Report here.

In addition, we helped numerous local nonprofits through store discounts and donations of gift cards and books. When our business does well, we are able to do good in the world, and we are so grateful to our customers who make that possible.

These seven nonprofits received approximately 60% of our financial support in 2024. We hope you’ll take a few moments to read about their work that you, via your purchases at Curious Iguana, support.

Children of Incarcerated Parents Partnership (COIPP)
COIPP fosters the growth of strong, resilient, hopeful children who are impacted by an incarcerated loved one in the Frederick County region.
WordPlay Connects
WordPlay Connects is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the mission of connecting young West Virginians with authors, illustrators, and books to inspire a lifelong love of reading.
Literacy Council of Frederick County
Provides Frederick County adults with pathways to essential literacy skills. This local organization has been lifting lives through literacy for 60 years.
The Frederick Center
The Frederick Center is a 501c3 organization that serves the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) communities.
United Way of Frederick County
United Way of Frederick County mobilizes the caring power of our whole community to improve lives.
SHIP of Frederick County
SHIP provides critical resources and urgent services to the hundreds of Frederick County youth experiencing homelessness each year.
African American Resources Cultural and Heritage Society
The African American Resources Cultural and Heritage (AARCH) Society was incorporated as a 501 (c)(3) non-profit in 2009 to celebrate and illuminate the rich contributions and history of African Americans in Frederick County.

Curious Iguana also made cash contributions to these organizations in 2024:

Downtown Frederick Partnership, Friends of Middletown Library, FCPL Greatest Need Fund, Phoenix Recovery Academy, Housing Authority of the City of Frederick, Beloved Asheville, BINC Foundation, The Delaplaine Arts Center, Appalachian Prison Book Project, and Federated Charities.

* In 2010, Maryland became the first state to recognize a new corporate form called a “benefit corporation” (not to be confused with a Certified B Corporation or B-corp). The legislation allows corporations to pursue socially responsible purposes in addition to profits.
