Take Root is a welcoming and vibrant interior plant shop located in the heart of historic Downtown Frederick\, MD specializing in a variety of stunning houseplants and accessories. \nLocation: Frederick Book Arts Center\, 127 S. Carroll Street\, Frederick\, MD 21701 \nThis event is free and open to the public. We are proud to partner with Frederick Book Arts Center for this event. \nFor accessibility requests\, email events@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: A cozy small town business-rivals-to-lovers romance about finding joy where you least expect it. \nFelicity Gallagher thought inheriting her aunt’s plant shop would be the fresh start she needed after the worst year of her life. She never expected that the trendy\, mac and cheese themed restaurant next door–and its inconveniently hot chef–might be her downfall. \nNicolas Holm-Bozic is arrogant\, presumptuous\, and just flat out gets under her skin. Felicity has made ignoring him an art form—until the exploding popularity of his restaurant leads to renewed interest in Felicity’s quirky corner of Kansas. Now\, a greedy developer is threatening both their businesses with a towering parking garage that could steal the sunlight from her plants. With her shop’s future in jeopardy\, Felicity must join forces with her least favorite neighbor. \nAs the pair fight back\, Nic and Felicity’s formerly contentious relationship blooms into something new\, but hidden battle scars\, old secrets\, and a devastating storm threaten everything they’ve built. Will they choose to cut and run\, or are they finally ready to put down permanent roots? \nAbout the author: ANDIE BURKE writes books that kick-off with hilarious disasters and end in swoon-worthy happily ever afters. She’s the USA Today bestselling author of With Stars in Her Eyes\, Fall for Him\, and Fly with Me. She lives in Maryland with her partner and two kids and also works as a pediatric radiology nurse. \nAbout the moderator: Chip Pons grew up in a small lake town in Northern Michigan\, where he discovered the kind of stories that make you believe in magic\, love\, and second chances. Now based in Washington\, DC with his dream of a husband\, he writes romances rooted in queer joy and the belief that everyone deserves their happily ever after.

SUMMARY:Huda Al-Marashi: Hail Mariam
DESCRIPTION:Join Curious Iguana on Thursday\, September 24 from 6:00-7:00 pm at C. Burr Artz Public Library to celebrate the new release from middle-grade author Huda Al-Marashi\, Hail Mariam. Starting middle school is challenging enough\, but when young Muslim Mariam’s sister is diagnosed with a serious lung condition\, Mariam wonders if she’ll have to tackle her concerns about playing Mother Mary in a Christian play on her own. Huda will be in-conversation with fellow middle-grade author Hena Khan. Following their conversation\, Huda will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Hail Mariam will be available for purchase at the event.  \nLocation: C. Burr Artz Public Library\, 110 E. Patrick Street\, Frederick\, MD 21701 \nThis event is free and open to the public. We are proud to partner with Frederick County Public Libraries for this event.  \nFor accessibility requests\, email events@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: Hail Mariam is an interfaith Muslim take on Are You There God? It’s Me\, Margaret drawn from the author’s own experiences in Catholic school. \nSixth grade wasn’t supposed to be this complicated. \nIraqi American Mariam Hassan transfers to a local Catholic school and before her first day her parents remind her that she might be the first Muslim her classmates have ever met. No big deal\, right? Just represent an entire religion while making new friends\, keeping up with schoolwork\, and figuring out who she is. \nWhen Mariam’s younger sister\, Salma\, is diagnosed with a serious lung condition\, her family faces endless doctor visits and sleepless nights. Mariam tries to lighten their burden and keep her own problems to herself—including the fact that she’s just been cast as Mary in the school’s Christmas nativity play. \nMariam wants to honor her faith and her new community\, but she’s terrified of crossing a religious line. Can a Muslim girl be the lead in a Christian story? What will her family think? And why does she feel like every decision she makes represents all Muslims? \nMariam discovers that faith\, much like friendships\, isn’t about perfection—it’s about connection. As she leans on her family\, friends\, and school community\, she begins to see the power of interfaith cooperation and learns she doesn’t have to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders. \nHail Mariam is a celebration of the beauty of finding common ground. \nAbout the author: Huda Al-Marashi writes for both children and adults. She is the author of the middle grade novel Hail Mariam and a co-author of the Walter Dean Myers Honors award-winning novel Grounded. In addition to her memoir First Comes Marriage: My Not-So-Typical American Love Story\, she has contributed essays and op-eds to various anthologies and news outlets\, such as the New York Times\, Washington Post\, LA Times\, and al Jazeera. She is a fellow and mentor with the Muslim Storytellers Program at Boyds Mill\, formerly known as the Highlights Foundation\, and she lives in San Diego\, California. \nAbout the moderator: Hena Khan has been publishing books for children for over two decades. She writes award-winning picture books\, middle grade fiction\, pick-your-path adventures\, and graphic novels. Her stories are often centered around her culture\, community\, friendship\, and family. Hena’s bestselling novels include Amina’s Voice and More to the Story. She is also the author of the Zayd Saleem Chasing the Dream\, Zara’s Rules\, and Super You! series. Hena’s picture books include Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns and Under My Hijab\, and We Are Big Time is her first graphic novel. Hena lives in her hometown of Rockville\, Maryland.

SUMMARY:Susan Coll: Word Salad
DESCRIPTION:Join Curious Iguana at C. Burr Artz Public Library for a fun evening with bestselling author Susan Coll on Tuesday\, September 29 from 6:00-7:00 pm to celebrate her latest release\, Word Salad! The story follows Matilda as she returns home to D.C. to care for her ailing mother\, takes on a new job at a local bookstore\, and finds herself in the middle of a surprising turn of bookish events. Susan will be in-conversation with Holly Smith\, editor-in-chief of the Washington Independent Review of Books. Following the discussion\, Susan will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Word Salad will be available for purchase at the event. \nLocation: C. Burr Artz Public Library\, 110 E. Patrick Street\, Frederick\, 21701 \nThis event is free and open to the public. We are proud to partner with Frederick County Public Libraries for this event. \nFor accessibility requests\, email events@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: Matilda loves logic and order\, and now her structured world is falling apart—in a bookstore. \nFormer economics major Matilda is moving back to her hometown of Washington D.C. to care for her ailing mother\, and she’s desperate for money. She takes a job at her neighborhood bookstore and tries\, in vain\, to make sense of illogical business of books. To make things worse\, she’s forced to team up with a new hire—the enigmatic\, flaky\, larger-than-life\, Sage—who shows up on her first day of work with zero administrative skills and her tiny\, puffy\, incessantly urinating dog that resembles an underfed rat. \nSomething in the chaos begins to remind Matilda of her long-neglected creative side\, and she starts to rediscover the person she once was before so much got in the way. But things get even more unmanageable when Matilda and Sage are tasked with putting together an event for the reclusive and controversial Dr. Jordan Rutabaga\, a windbag of a public intellectual with a cult following that includes a number of people who would like to literally and figuratively see him dead. Rutabaga has a long list of alleged misdeeds\, from plagiarism to failure to pay child support to stiffing the nanny. \nAs the event date approaches\, Matilda and Sage discover that Sage and Rutabaga have their own not uncomplicated past\, adding yet another person to list of people who do not wish him well. Add in a lawsuit and an impending snowstorm along with the potentially sinister presence of Rutabaga himself\, and Matilda is about to come undone. \nAbout the author: USA Today and Washington Post bestselling writer Susan Coll is the author of eight previous novels\, including The Literati\, Real Life & Other Fictions\, and Bookish People. Her other books include The Stager\, Acceptance\, Rockville Pike\, and Karlmarx.com. Her work has appeared in The Washington Post\, The New York Times\, NPR.org \, The Atlantic.com\, The Millions\, and other publications. Her novel\, Acceptance\, was made into a television movie starring Joan Cusack. Susan is the recipient of multiple grants from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. She works as an event consultant at Politics and Prose Bookstore and was the president of the PEN/Faulkner Foundation for five years. Coll teaches workshops at The Writer’s Center in Bethesda\, Maryland. Her new novel\, WORD SALAD\, will be published by Harper Muse in September 2026. \nAbout the moderator: Holly Smith is editor-in-chief of the Washington Independent Review of Books\, as well as a college lecturer\, longtime freelance writer\, and proud “Jeopardy!” bronze medalist. Prior to joining the Independent\, she was managing editor of Maryland Life magazine. Her work has appeared in the Washington Post\, CNBC.com \, Salon\, and elsewhere. She also co-authored the travel guide Seafood Lover’s Chesapeake Bay\, which is ironic since she doesn’t eat fish. Find her on Bluesky at @‌HSmithWrites.

SUMMARY:Melinda Beatty: What Is a Pirate?
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to celebrate our very own bookseller and local author Melinda Beatty on Saturday\, October 3 from 11:30 am-12:30 pm at C. Burr Artz Public Library! Join us for storytime with Mel\, where she will read her new book\, What Is a Pirate? Following the reading\, enjoy a fun craft with the author! Mel will also be available to sign books. Copies of What Is a Pirate? will be available for purchase at the event.  You can preorder a signed and personalized copy on our website by clicking here. \nLocation: the Children’s Programming Room at C. Burr Artz Public Library\, 110 E. Patrick Street\, Frederick\, MD\, 21701 \nThis event is free and open to the public. We are proud to partner with Frederick County Public Libraries for this event. \nFor accessibility requests\, email events@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: From the team that brought you The Witch’s Table comes another hilarious and charming story about what exactly makes a pirate a pirate! \nI am a pirate\, so I guess pirates do. \nThe crew aboard the Leaky Sneaker is filled with the piratey-est pirates ever to sail the seven seas. Which is why Captain Bogbrush has no idea what to do with Montague Frippington von Fancypants. Montague wears petticoats while sailing\, takes pearl necklaces as booty\, and politely plunders on raids. Pirates don’t do that! Or can Montague help the captain understand that there is more to being a pirate than what he might believe? \nAbout the author: Melinda Beatty has had years of practice trying to explain to others why she was just having an imaginary conversation between two people that don’t exist\, so becoming a writer seemed like the best way to stop everyone from looking at her funny. After years of narrowboat living on the English canals\, she and her British husband are now back on dry land in Maryland\, where by day\, she’s a mild-mannered indie bookseller\, and by night\, she wrangles words\, crafts projects\, and raises a Labrador and two fierce miniwomen.

SUMMARY:Anna North: Bog Queen
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome New York Times bestselling author Anna North to Frederick on Friday\, October 16 from 6:00-7:00 pm at Frederick Book Arts Center. Join us to hear about her bestselling novel\, Bog Queen\, and learn about female empowerment and the impact of politics on the environment\, from the Iron Age to post-Brexit England. Anna will be in-conversation with Holly Smith\, editor-in-chief of the Washington Independent Review of Books. Following their conversation\, Anna will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Bog Queen will be available for purchase at the event. \nAbout the book: From the NYT bestselling author of Outlawed\, a forensic anthropologist confronts a strangely well-preserved Iron Age body in this “absorbing\, complex mystery” (People magazine). \nWhen a body is found in a bog in northwest England\, Agnes\, an American forensic anthropologist\, is called to investigate. But this body is not like any she’s ever seen. Though its bones prove it was buried more than two thousand years ago\, it is almost completely preserved. \nSoon Agnes is drawn into a mystery from the distant past\, called to understand and avenge the death of an Iron Age woman more like her than she knows. Along the way\, she must contend with peat-cutters who want to profit from the bog and activists who demand that the land be left undisturbed. Then there’s the moss itself: a repository of artifacts\, with its own dark stories to tell. \nFlashing between post-Brexit England and the druidic order of Celtic Europe\, Bog Queen brims with ancient wisdom as it connects across time two gifted\, farsighted young women learning to harness their strengths in a landscape more mysterious than either can imagine. \nAbout the author: Anna North is the author of America Pacifica\, The Life and Death of Sophie Stark\, and the instant New York Times bestseller and Reese’s Book Club pick Outlawed. She is a senior correspondent at Vox and lives in Brooklyn.

SUMMARY:Richard Chizmar: Killing the Boogeyman
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to welcome back bestselling author Richard Chizmar to Frederick on Thursday\, October 22 from 6:00-7:00 pm at Frederick Book Arts Center! Join us to hear about Richard’s novel\, Killing the Boogeyman\, the thrilling conclusion to his bestselling Boogeyman series. Following Richard’s talk\, he will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Killing the Boogeyman will be available for purchase at the event.  \nLocation: Frederick Book Arts Center\, 127 S. Carroll Street\, Frederick\, MD 21787 \nThis event is free and open to the public. We are proud to partner with Frederick Book Arts Center for this event. \nFor accessibility requests\, email events@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: The terrifying horror trilogy finale to the New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling series that includes Chasing the Boogeyman and Becoming the Boogeyman from “one of horror’s indispensable writers” (Paste). \nNotorious serial killer Joshua Gallagher—dubbed “the Boogeyman” by the media—has vanished from prison. One moment\, he was locked inside a maximum-security cell; the next\, he was gone\, leaving behind on the wall a crude hangman puzzle and two chilling words: IT’S TIME. \nNow\, days later\, the world is coming apart again. Bodies are turning up near writer and Gallagher confidante Richard Chizmar’s home\, echoing the Boogeyman’s signature horrors. The news frenzy reignites while the police chase shadows…even as Gallagher’s twisted true crime fanbase celebrates online\, acknowledging that he’s something more than human now. \nTo everyone else\, it’s a desperate hunt for answers. To Chizmar\, it’s more like destiny closing in. The evidence\, the sightings\, the voices in the dark all point to one unthinkable conclusion: the Boogeyman never left. SUMMARY:The Reader: A Witchy Book Fair for Adults
DESCRIPTION:It’s the best time of the year… time for Curious Iguana’s annual Witchy Book Fair for adults! \nOn Thursday\, October 29\, from 4:00-8:00pm\, come for a magical evening with Curious Iguana at Attaboy Barrel House\, where we will have a variety of spooky-themed books. Joining us will be authors Leslye Penelope (The Inevitable Undoing of Zahara Douglass)\, K.S. Shay (Portrait of a Witch Undone)\, Robert Plant (Dark Matter)\, and Melinda Beatty (What is a Pirate?); they will be signing and personalizing copies of their books throughout the evening. We’ll have a delicious food truck joining us to serve up some unique goodness\, and Attaboy will provide tempting potions till 9:00pm. Our friends from Oddbelle (formerly The Muse) will also be present to sell some fine witchy-themed wares\, and there will be a tarot card reader as well. \nParking: Park on-site or park at the East All Saints Street Parking Garage (125 E All Saints St\, Frederick\, MD) and enjoy a 7-8 minute stroll to the venue. \nAuthors: \nLeslye Penelope has been writing since she could hold a pen and loves getting lost in the worlds in her head. She is an award-winning author of fantasy and romance. Equally left and right-brained\, she studied filmmaking and computer science at Howard University and sometimes dreams in HTML. She hosts the My Imaginary Friends podcast\, co-hosts the Ink and Magic podcast\, and lives in Maryland with her feline dependents. \nK.S. Shay grew up in the part of northeastern Massachusetts where half the streets are named after people who were accused of witchcraft. She loves live music\, local gossip\, and getting outside. You can find her across social media @ksshaywrites and at ksshaywrites.com. \nRobert Plant is an author based in Maryland who writes emotionally driven fiction with a speculative twist. His novel\, Dark Matter\, is a chilling collection of short stories exploring technology\, mortality\, and the quiet terrors of modern life. When he’s not writing\, Robert enjoys playing hockey\, reading science fiction\, and exploring life’s darker corners with curiosity and heart. \nMelinda Beatty has had years of practice trying to explain to others why she was just having an imaginary conversation between two people that don’t exist\, so becoming a writer seemed like the best way to stop everyone from looking at her funny. After years of narrowboat living on the English canals\, she and her British husband are now back on dry land in Maryland\, where by day\, she’s a mild-mannered indie bookseller\, and by night\, she wrangles words\, crafts projects\, and raises a Labrador and two fierce miniwomen. \nVendors: \nOddbelle (formerly The Muse) is Frederick’s first handmade boutique\, specializing in jewelry\, art and more\, with a focus on local makers! To help you get in the spooky spirit\, they’ll be offering a unique selection of witchy soy candles\, spell jar necklaces\, art inspired by mythology and folklore\, handprinted t-shirts\, hand-sculpted ceramic ghosts and more! \nMy Tarot: Tarot card readings by Jamie Horrell. \nPlease note\, we are not accepting additional vendors or authors to this event due to space.

Purchase your ticket online at Warehouse Cinemas’ website. Then\, bring your ticket or proof of purchase to Curious Iguana Books in Downtown Frederick to receive a special 20% discount on the book to read before watching the adaption!  \nWarehouse Cinemas Frederick address: 1301 W Patrick St\, Frederick\, MD 21702 \nCurious Iguana Books address: 12 N. Market Street\, Frederick\, MD 21701 \nWe are proud to partner with Warehouse Cinemas Frederick for this event! \nFor accessibility requests\, email events@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout Sense and Sensibility: Marianne Dashwood wears her heart on her sleeve\, and when she falls in love with the dashing but unsuitable John Willoughby\, she ignores her sister Elinor’s warning that her impulsive behavior leaves her open to gossip and innuendo. Meanwhile Elinor\, always sensitive to social convention\, is struggling to conceal her own romantic disappointment\, even from those closest to her. Through their parallel experience of love—and its threatened loss—the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love. Austen’s classic wit and timeless themes that have enamored generations of readers will once again make their way to the big screen in a fresh film adaptation starring Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People\, Where the Crawdads Sing) and Esmé Creed-Miles.

One life for another. And only her soul to pay. \nTwo years ago\, Tara Corbane made a deal with a demon. Each lunar eclipse\, she must feed him a lover’s heart torn out by her bare hands—and in exchange\, he keeps her sister’s dying heart alive. A desperate deal that Tara fears is making her more and more like Thorn\, the twisted but tantalizing demon she’s sworn to hate. \nThirty days before the next eclipse\, Tara heads to New Orleans\, where her newest target awaits. But Rian Connach\, the handsome heir to a real estate empire\, is nothing like the others. He’s single\, for starters\, and isn’t out for love but vengeance. He’s hot on the trail of the serial killer he blames for his girlfriend’s gruesome death—a trail that will lead directly to Tara. \nAs the eclipse draws near\, Tara finds herself trapped in a game of cat and mouse. To save her own skin\, she must win the trust and ruin the mind of the beguiling and broken boy hunting her\, all the while fighting her feelings for the demon whose secrets threaten everything she’s ever believed about him\, and herself. With Rian getting closer and closer to the truth\, and Thorn warning of vicious consequences if she doesn’t fulfill their bargain\, time is running out to answer the ultimate question: \nIs Tara the predator\, or the prey? \nAbout the author: Jenni Howell is the New York Times-bestselling author of Boys with Sharp Teeth. Before becoming an author\, she tried out archaeology\, linguistics\, mongoose herding (known to some as “teaching”)\, finance\, and espionage\, but always got bored. Now she writes books\, so her entire world changes every six months—and she will never be bored again. jennihowell.com / @‌byjennihowell \nAbout the moderator: Brigid Kemmerer is the author of New York Times bestsellers Forging Silver into Stars and Carving Shadows into Gold\, and two New York Times bestselling series–Cursebreakers\, which includes A Curse So Dark and Lonely\, A Heart So Fierce and Broken\, and A Vow So Bold and Deadly\, and Defy the Night\, which includes Defy the Night\, Defend the Dawn\, and Destroy the Day.
