SUMMARY:Lacey N. Dunham: The Belles
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Curious Iguana from 6:00-7:00 pm on Friday\, September 12 for a meet-and-greet with author Lacey N. Dunham as she promotes her debut novel\, The Belles. This dark\, coming-of-age story centers on an exclusive clique that tests the boundaries in risky ways as they navigate their way through college in the 1950s. Copies of The Belles will be available for purchase at the signing. \nThis event is free and open to the public. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: In this richly atmospheric\, dark academia debut novel\, a young woman with a secretive past will risk everything—including her life—to fit in. \nBelles never tell… \nIt’s 1951 at the secluded Bellerton College\, and Deena Williams is an outsider doing her best to blend in with her wealthy and perfectly groomed peers. Infamous for its strict rules as much as its prestige\, attending Bellerton could give Deena the comfortable life she’s always dreamed of. \nShe quickly forms an alliance with the five other freshmen on her floor\, and soon they are singled out by the president’s wife as the most promising girls of their class\, who anoints them: The Belles. They walk the college’s halls in menacing unison\, matching velvet ribbons in their hair. But no sisterhood comes without secrets\, and the Belles are no exception. Playing cruel pranks on their dormitory housemother and embarking on boundary-shattering night games\, the Belles test the limits of the campus rules. \nBut as Deena begins to piece together the sinister history of Bellerton\, her own past threatens to come to light\, forcing her to make a dangerous choice. A chilling and seductive coming-of-age story\, The Belles is an excavation of the dark side of girlhood\, the intricacies of privilege\, and the unbridled desire to belong at any cost. \nAbout the author: Lacey N. Dunham is the author of The Belles. She has received support from the Elizabeth George Foundation\, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities\, the Sewanee Writers Conference as a Tennessee Williams scholar\, and Catapult as a merit scholar. Her writing has appeared in Ploughshares\, The Kenyon Review\, and more. She lives in Washington\, DC. Find out more at http://LaceyNDunham.com .

SUMMARY:Andie Burke: With Stars in Her Eyes
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at C. Burr Artz Library on Tuesday\, September 16 from 6:00-7:00 pm to celebrate all things “sapphic bookstore romance” with us and local author Andie Burke! Andie will be discussing her latest novel\, With Stars in Her Eyes\, with local book club host Stephanie Jenks. This story centers on love found in the most bookish of places; when cellist Courtney returns home for a respite from a botched performance and spiraling rumors\, she stumbles into love with a newcomer looking for a fresh start… who happens to work in the tattoo shop next door to Courtney’s best friend’s bookshop. After her conversation\, Andie will answer questions and sign books. \nCopies of With Stars in Her Eyes will be available for purchase at the event but you can preorder signed and personalized copies ahead of time on our website here. \n*Include personalization requests in the notes field at checkout and select “Pick Up” if you’d like to pick it up at the event or shipping if you cannot attend. \n  \nThis free\, public event is presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: A swoon-worthy sapphic bookstore romance about fresh starts and finding that one person who feels like home from breakout author Andie Burke (Fly with Me). \nSeconds from a meteoric career launch\, cellist Courtney Starling suffers a frightening migraine attack during a key performance. While harmful rumors fly\, she escapes to her happy place—her best friend’s Kansas bookshop. Courtney’s working incognito when a scream sends her leaping off a shelving ladder to find the woman who screamed cowering near the register. \nWhen Thea Quinn dropped in for a misdelivered package\, she did not expect a mortifying encounter with a bearded dragon in front of an inconveniently attractive bookseller. Clutching an upcoming book club flyer and the tattered shreds of her dignity\, she heads back to her new piercing job at the tattoo shop next door. She moved to this quirky place for a fresh start. But maybe the meet-disaster was a sign? Maybe Thea needs to branch out beyond her photography hobby and connect with new people…like at a historical romance book club run by a particularly mysterious and sexy bookseller with a pixie cut? \nFriendly lunches become stolen moments between the bookshelves. Courtney and Thea’s old problems feel eons away. But just as their chemistry heats to a combustion point\, consequences from Courtney’s past arrive literally on her doorstep at exactly the wrong moment. New revelations and surprising connections take the pair from feeling joyfully lovestruck to confusingly star-crossed. Both women must decide what they’re willing to give up for happily ever after. \nAbout the author: Andie Burke specializes in big-hearted queer romcoms that kick-off with meet-disasters rather than meet-cutes. When not writing\, she works as a pediatric radiology nurse. She lives with two small but hilarious humans in a Maryland home filled with an alarming number of books\, ultra-fine point pens\, and dehydrated houseplants. She is the author of Fall for Him as well as Fly with Me\, one of Autostraddle’s Best Queer Books of the Year.

SUMMARY:Alma Katsu: Fiend
DESCRIPTION:Come for the glamour\, stay for the thrills; join us at the Frederick Book Arts Center on Wednesday\, October 1 from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm as we celebrate author Alma Katsu’s newest release\, Fiend. This story follows the deadly scheming of a rich family running one of the world’s largest import-export companies. Alma will be joined in conversation by Jamie Flanagan\, an author\, actor\, and Bram Stoker Awards®–winning screenwriter. Following their discussion\, Alma will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Fiend will be available for purchase at the event. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nFor accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: Historical horror maven Alma Katsu turns her talents to the modern world for the first time\, in this terrifying tale about an all-powerful family with an ancient evil under its thumb. \nImagine if the Sackler family had a demon at their beck and call. \nThe Berisha family runs one of the largest import-export companies in the world\, and they’ve always been lucky. Their rivals suffer strokes. Inconvenient buildings catch on fire. Earthquakes swallow up manufacturing plants\, destroying harmful evidence. Things always seem to work out for the Berishas. They’re blessed. \nAt least that is what Zef\, the patriarch\, has always told his three children. And each of them knows their place in the family—Dardan\, as the only male heir\, must prepare to take over as keeper of the Berisha secrets\, Maris’s most powerful contribution\, much to her dismay\, will be to marry strategically\, and Nora’s job\, as the youngest\, is to just stay out of the way. But when things stop going as planned\, and the family blessing starts looking more like a curse\, the Berishas begin to splinter\, each hatching their own secret scheme. They didn’t get to be one of the richest families in the world without spilling a little blood\, but this time\, it might be their own. \nAbout the author: Alma Katsu is the award-winning author of The Hunger (“supernatural suspense at its finest”-NYT) and The Fervor (“a feat of pure storytelling”- NYT). Her books have won or been nominated for the Stoker\, Locus\, Goodreads\, and Shirley Jackson awards and made best books lists at NPR\, Library Journal\, Oprah\, Barnes & Noble\, Amazon\, and more. Her next novel\, FIEND (coming 9/16)\, has been optioned for a TV series. \nAbout the moderator: Jamie Flanagan is an author\, actor\, and Bram Stoker Awards®–winning screenwriter. Their short fiction has been published by Crooked Lane Books\, Shortwave Publishing\, and others. Screenwriting credits include Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor\, Midnight Mass\, The Midnight Club\, The Fall of the House of Usher\, AMC Shudder’s CREEPSHOW\, Peacock’s Hysteria!\, and Amazon’s upcoming series adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie.

SUMMARY:Alyssa Colman: Where Only Storms Grow
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Curious Iguana at 6:00 pm on Wednesday\, October 8 for a meet-and-greet with author Alyssa Colman as she promotes her new book\, Where Only Storms Grow. After spending the day visiting schools\, Alyssa will be at the Iguana in the evening to meet fans and sign books! \nThis event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event. \nAbout the book: For Fans of the I Survived series and The War That Saved My Life\, this gripping middle grade novel is set during one of the most dangerous storms in American history. \nIt’s been four years since rain fell on the Oklahoma panhandle and the closeness between the Stanton twins has dried up as much as the land. Howe Stanton has been practicing running away and longs for the family to quit this land of dust where only troubles grow. Despite the scoliosis that causes Joanna Stanton near-constant pain\, she isn’t ready to give up like her brother. But when Daddy leaves the family behind to find work in California\, saving the farm from ruin falls on Howe’s unwilling and Joanna’s uneven shoulders. \nTo pay the mortgage\, Joanna takes a job at the local hospital and discovers purpose in helping others. Howe finds unexpected joy in caring for his father’s horse and escapes in a borrowed book. \nBut then a tragedy in town reveals the dust’s deadly dangers. With the worst storm of the Dust Bowl bearing down on their home\, Howe and Joanna must put aside their differences and work together\, or everyone and everything they love will be lost to the dust. \nAbout the author: Alyssa Colman is the author of the forthcoming Where Only Storms Grow (available 8/19/2025)\, which was recently named a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection. Her other books include The Tarnished Garden and The Gilded Girl\, which won the 2021 Northern Lights Book Award for middle grade fantasy and was a Bank Street Best Book of the Year. Alyssa is a graduate of Wake Forest University and resides in Virginia. When she’s not writing\, she enjoys making messes in the kitchen with her kids and scaring her husband with DIY home improvements.

SUMMARY:Richard and W.H. Chizmar: Widow’s Point
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, October 10\, from 6:00-7:30pm\, please join us at the Frederick Book Arts Center as we welcome bestselling horror author Richard Chizmar and his son\, W.H. Chizmar for a night of chilling discussion of their latest novel Widow’s Point. This novel centers on an abandoned lighthouse where thrill seekers come to find evidence of the supernatural but soon realize all is not what it seems in the “cursed” place. After their conversation\, Richard and W.H. Chizmar will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Widow’s Point will be available for purchase at the event. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, presented in partnership with the Frederick Book Arts Center. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: New York Times bestselling author Richard Chizmar\, “one of horror’s indispensable writers” (Paste)\, and his son W.H. Chizmar\, critically acclaimed author of Them (hailed by New York Times bestselling author Josh Malerman as “one of the best debuts I’ve ever read”) present a riveting found footage narrative about doomed thrill-seekers trapped in a haunted lighthouse. \n“This is a bad place. I don’t think people are meant to live here.” \nLongtime residents of Harper’s Cove believe that something is wrong with the Widow’s Point Lighthouse. Some say it’s cursed. Others claim it’s haunted. \nOriginally built in 1838\, three workers were killed during the lighthouse’s construction\, including one who mysteriously plunged to his death from the catwalk. That tragic accident was never explained\, and it was just the beginning of the terror. In the decades that followed\, nearly two dozen additional deaths occurred in or around the lighthouse including cold-blooded murder\, suicide\, unexplained accidents and disappearances\, the slaughter of an entire family\, and the inexplicable death of a Hollywood starlet who was filming a movie on the grounds. \nThe lighthouse was finally shuttered tight in 1988 and a security fence was erected around the property. No one has been inside since. Until now. \nTold across two harrowing incidents from 2017 and 2025\, those who enter the Widow’s Point Lighthouse searching for supernatural proof and the next big thing find themselves cut off from the outside world. And although no one has recently stepped foot inside the structure\, they are not alone. \nIn this remarkable collaboration\, father and son writing team\, Richard and W.H. Chizmar combine forces to tell a terrifying ghost story that will make you think twice about what’s waiting for you in the dark. \nAbout the authors: \nRichard Chizmar is the coauthor (with Stephen King) of the New York Times bestselling novella Gwendy’s Button Box and Gwendy’s Final Task\, and the solo novella Gwendy’s Magic Feather. Recent books include the New York Times bestsellers Memorials\, Becoming the Boogeyman\, and Chasing the Boogeyman; The Girl on the Porch; The Long Way Home; his fourth short story collection\, and Widow’s Point; a chilling tale about a haunted lighthouse cowritten with his son Billy Chizmar\, which was recently made into a feature film. His short fiction has appeared in dozens of publications\, including Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and The Year’s 25 Finest Crime and Mystery Stories. He has won two World Fantasy awards\, four International Horror Guild awards\, and the HWA’s Board of Trustees award. Chizmar’s work has been translated into more than fifteen languages throughout the world\, and he has appeared at numerous conferences as a writing instructor\, speaker\, panelist\, and guest of honor. Follow him on X\, Facebook\, Instagram\, Threads\, and Bluesky: @‌RichardChizmar\, or visit his website at RichardChizmar.com. \nW. H. Chizmar is the author of numerous short stories and essays. His debut novel Them is coming soon from Gallery Books and as a limited edition from Lividian Publications. Chizmar lives in Maryland with his Bernese Mountain Dog\, J.J. (short for James Joyce).

SUMMARY:Melinda Beatty: The Witch's Table
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Curious Iguana at 6:00 pm on Wednesday\, October 29 for a meet-and-greet with local author and Curious Iguana bookseller Melinda Beatty as she promotes her book\, The Witch’s Table. After spending the day visiting schools\, Melinda will be at the Iguana in the evening to meet fans and sign books! \nThis event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event. \nAbout the book: When a young witch inherits a rather cantankerous family heirloom; she has to figure out how to outwit her cursed companion. \nThe Table had been in the Witch’s family for a very long time. No one remembered who had cursed it to stay with them forever\, but none of them liked it much. The young witch initially tries to thwart the Table’s shenanigans. But after some time living with the Table\, she begins to notice how cold the kitchen floor is on a brisk winter’s day\, how many nicks and scratches the Table has endured\, and how hard it is to stand on all four legs for so many hours\, and she comes to realize compassion will get her further than cleverness. This charming and hilarious picture book is about empathy and trying to find common ground with the people–or furniture–around you. \nAbout the author: Melinda Beatty has had years of practice trying to explain to others why she was just having an imaginary conversation between two people that don’t exist\, so becoming a writer seemed like the best way to stop everyone from looking at her funny. After years of narrowboat living on the English canals\, she and her British husband are now back on dry land in Maryland\, where by day\, she’s a mild-mannered indie bookseller\, and by night\, she wrangles words\, crafts projects\, and raises a Labrador and two fierce mini-women.

SUMMARY:Charles Ferguson: Presidential Seclusion
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at C. Burr Artz Public Library on Monday\, November 10\, from 6:00-7:00 pm to hear from author Charles Ferguson as he discusses his new book Presidential Seclusion: The Power of Camp David. This enlightening book shares the little-known impact of this mountain retreat on the nation and the world. Following his presentation\, Charles will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Presidential Seclusion will be available for purchase at the event. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: Behind the gates of Camp David—where presidents find solitude\, forge diplomacy\, and shape history in absolute secrecy. \nThe Presidential Retreat Camp David is shrouded in mystery\, and rightfully so. The hidden retreat atop the Catoctin Mountains is the one place the President\, First Family\, and invited guests can gather in absolute secrecy for relaxation\, rejuvenation\, and world-changing decisions. Because of this dedication to privacy\, and a desire to maintain the mystery and exclusivity of the last bastion of solitude for the President\, few comprehensive accounts exist detailing the storied history of Camp David and the role the “Spirit of Camp David” plays in world affairs. \nPresidential Seclusion provides an exclusive account of the mysterious and storied retreat. Extensively researched from Presidential Archives as well as from the pages of Presidential memoirs\, this non-partisan\, informative account weaves exclusive stories into a tapestry revealing the importance of Camp David on diplomacy and world history. Written by the former Camp David Historian\, this personalized tour of the exclusive retreat makes tree-shrouded trails\, majestic vistas\, and rooms where history happened over the last 80 years accessible to everyone. As you read\, the “Spirit of Camp David” is revealed to infuse everyone who works and visits the President’s private mountain retreat\, mainly how Camp David personally affected its primary guests\, the fifteen First Families fortunate to call the private retreat a second home. \nAbout the author: Charles Ferguson spent three and a half years as the Camp David Historian and Presidential Chaplain. During that time\, he coordinated with 14 Presidential Libraries to better tell the true story of the President’s exclusive mountaintop retreat\, scouring records and memoirs for engaging stories\, providing glimpses into the hidden world of Camp David. Conducting hundreds of tours for personal guests of the President\, his accessible storytelling draws you into the wonders of Camp David as if you are walking the historical private trails with your own personal tour guide. \nHis writings have appeared on the Faith and Leadership website and in The Presbyterian Outlook\, Presbyterians Today\, and the United States Naval Institute’s Proceedings magazine.

SUMMARY:Matt Tavares: Dasher and the Polar Bear
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Curious Iguana at 3:30 pm on Sunday\, November 16 for a meet-and-greet with author Matt Tavares as he promotes his new book\, Dasher and the Polar Bear. Matt will be at the Iguana till 4:30 pm to meet fans and sign books; a personalized book will make a great holiday gift! \nThis event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event. \nAbout the book: One bright night just before Christmas\, Dasher the reindeer is out admiring the stunning colors of the northern lights when she meets George\, a sweet polar bear. Astounded to see that Dasher can fly\, George confides that he has dreamed of soaring through the sky himself. Dasher would like nothing more than to bestow some Christmas magic on her new friend\, but their flying lesson turns out to be a disappointing failure. Even Dasher\, an intrepid reindeer in the habit of giving—not giving up—begins to wonder if anyone can make George’s dream take flight. \nIn this sparkling new Christmas story\, Matt Tavares\, New York Times best-selling author of Dasher and its sequel\, Dasher Can’t Wait for Christmas\, is back to remind us that sometimes the best gift we can receive is simply to bear witness to wonder—and that not all presents fit inside Santa’s bag. \nAbout the author: Matt Tavares is the author-illustrator of the New York Times best-selling picture book Dasher and its sequel Dasher Can’t Wait for Christmas\, Red and Lulu\, the graphic novel Hoops\, and several sports biographies\, including Becoming Babe Ruth and Growing Up Pedro. SUMMARY:Emily Austin: Is This a Cry For Help?
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Frederick Book Arts Center on Monday\, January 12 from 6:30-7:30 pm for a delightful evening with bestselling author Emily Austin! We’ll be celebrating her latest release\, Is This a Cry For Help?\, a day early! Emily will be in-conversation with local author Andie Burke. This story is about a librarian who\, after experiencing a mental breakdown\, returns to work just as her community’s frustrations over book bans reaches its boiling point. Following her talk\, Emily will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Is This a Cry For Help? will be available for purchase at the event. \nLocation: Frederick Book Arts Center (127 S Carroll St\, Frederick\, MD 21701) \nThis event is free and open to the public. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: The bestselling “queen of darkly quirky\, endearingly flawed heroines” (Sarah Haywood\, author of The Cactus)\, returns with a luminous new novel following a librarian who comes back to work after a mental breakdown only to confront book-banning crusaders in an empowering story of grief\, love\, and the power of libraries. \nDarcy’s life turned out better than she could have ever imagined. She is a librarian at the local branch\, while her wife Joy runs a book binding service. Between the two of them\, there is no more room on their shelves with their ample book collections\, various knickknacks and bobbles\, and dried bouquets. Rounding out their ideal life is two cats and a sun-soaked house by the lake. \nBut when Darcy receives the news that her ex-boyfriend\, Ben\, has passed away\, she spirals into a pit of guilt and regret\, resulting in a mental breakdown and medical leave from the library. When she returns to work\, she is met by unrest in her community and protests surrounding intellectual freedom\, resulting in a call for book bans and a second look at the branch’s upcoming DEI programs. \nThrough the support of her community\, colleagues\, and the personal growth that results from examining her previous relationships\, Darcy comes into her own agency and the truest version of herself. Is This a Cry for Help? not only offers a moving portrait of queer life after coming of age but also powerfully explores questions about sexuality\, community\, and the importance of libraries. \nAbout the author: Emily Austin is the author of We Could Be Rats\, Everyone in This Room Will Someday Be Dead\, Interesting Facts About Space\, and the poetry collection Gay Girl Prayers. She was born in Ontario\, Canada\, and received two writing grants from the Canadian Council for the Arts. She studied English literature and library science at Western University. She currently lives in Ottawa\, in the territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation. \nAbout the moderator: Andie Burke specializes in big-hearted queer romcoms that kick-off with meet-disasters rather than meet-cutes.

SUMMARY:Richard Bell: The American Revolution and the Fate of the World
DESCRIPTION:With America’s 250th birthday on the horizon\, come join us on Thursday\, January 22\, from 6:30 pm-7:30 pm for a fascinating look into the past with author Richard Bell as he discusses his new book The American Revolution and the Fate of the World. Following his talk\, Richard will answer questions and sign books. Copies of The American Revolution and the Fate of the World will be available for purchase at the event. \nLocation: C. Burr Artz Public Library – 110 E Patrick St\, Frederick\, MD 21701 \nThis free\, public event is presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \n\nAbout the book: A prize-winning historian’s fascinating and unfamiliar recasting of America’s war of independence as a transformative international event \nIn this revelatory and enthralling book\, award-winning historian Richard Bell reveals the full breadth and depth of America’s founding event. The American Revolution was not only the colonies’ triumphant liberation from the rule of an overbearing England; it was also a cataclysm that pulled in participants from around the globe and threw the entire world order into chaos. Repositioning the Revolution at the center of an international web\, Bell’s narrative ranges as far afield as India\, Africa\, Central America\, and Australia. As his lens widens\, the “War of Independence” manifests itself as a sprawling struggle that upended the lives of millions of people on every continent and fundamentally transformed the way the world works\, disrupting trade\, restructuring penal systems\, stirring famine\, and creating the first global refugee crisis. Bell conveys the impact of these developments at home and abroad by grounding the narrative in the gripping stories of individuals—including women\, minorities\, and other disenfranchised people. The result is an unforgettable and unexpected work of American history that shifts everything we thought we knew about our creation story. \nAbout the author: Richard Bell is Professor of History at the University of Maryland and author of the book Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and their Astonishing Odyssey Home which was a finalist for the George Washington Prize and the Harriet Tubman Prize. He has held major research fellowships at Yale\, Cambridge\, and the Library of Congress and is the recipient of the National Endowment of the Humanities Public Scholar award and the Andrew Carnegie Fellowship. His new book\, The American Revolution and the Fate of the World\, was published by Penguin in November 2025.

As she struggles to process her feelings about the pregnancy\, Lilac drifts apart from her best friend Callie\, leaving Lilac lonelier than ever. \nIn a timely twist of fate\, Lilac discovers a check sent by her estranged father.
