SUMMARY:Marlene M. Johnson: Rise to the Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Join us Tuesday\, June 17 at Middletown Public Library from 6:30 pm-7:30 pm for a special evening with former lieutenant governor Marlene M. Johnson to discuss her memoir Rise to the Challenge. As Minnesota’s first woman lieutenant governor\, Johnson experienced many challenges while working in government; however\, the new difficulties she also faced when her strong\, supportive husband suffered a traumatic brain injury taught her lessons she never expected. Johnson will discuss her work creating her memoir\, then answer questions and sign books. Copies of Rise to the Challenge will be available for purchase at the event.\n\n\nThis event is presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries and is free and open to the public. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: Marking a milestone for women in state government\, Marlene M. Johnson became Minnesota’s first woman lieutenant governor under Rudy Perpich’s gubernatorial administration in January 1983. That same year\, she met her husband\, Peter\, and their deeply loving relationship profoundly sustained her for twenty-seven years. Rise to the Challenge weaves these personal and professional stories together in a courageous portrait of dedication and leadership. \nGrowing up in rural Minnesota\, Johnson began organizing and advocating for change early\, beginning with a campaign to introduce foreign languages into her high school curriculum. Pursuing a deeply felt commitment to improving the lives of others\, she continued to sharpen her leadership skills throughout her life\, participating in activist work in college\, cofounding organizations to support women entrepreneurs and politicians\, and eventually running an international education nonprofit. \nA stalwart supporter\, her husband gave Marlene strength and encouragement to face the challenges of the political landscape and its gender biases. Then\, in 2010\, he suffered a traumatic brain injury that would change both of their lives. Learning how to be a medical advocate and\, eventually\, facing the sorrow of Peter’s death\, Marlene relied on the hard-fought resilience and belief in herself that Peter had helped her to develop. \nA story of learning and leadership in politics\, business\, and public service\, Rise to the Challenge is a moving portrayal of spirit\, perseverance\, and grace in the face of daunting personal challenges\, supported by unwavering faith in the public good. \nAbout the author: Marlene M. Johnson was Minnesota’s first woman lieutenant governor\, serving in Governor Rudy Perpich’s administration from 1983 until 1991. She is cofounder of the Minnesota Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners and the Minnesota Women’s Campaign Fund and was executive director and CEO of NAFSA: Association of International Educators for nearly two decades. She is now on the advisory board of Kakenya’s Dream\, a board member of the Washington Office on Latin America\, and a trustee of The Alexandria Trust. In 1988\, she was awarded the Royal Order of the Polar Star by the Kingdom of Sweden. She lives in Washington\, D.C.

SUMMARY:Charlotte Taylor Fryar: Potomac Fever
DESCRIPTION:Join us Sunday\, June 22 from 2:00 pm-3:00 pm for an afternoon with author Charlotte Taylor Fryar as she discusses her debut book Potomac Fever\, which explores the winding history of this well-known river. After her talk\, Charlotte will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Potomac Fever will be available for purchase at the event. \nThis event will be held at Brunswick Branch Library in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. This event is free and open to the public. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: An impassioned meditation on American identity and its ebb and flow through the Capital’s great waterway \nAs she walks the length of the Potomac River\, clambering up its banks and sounding its depths\, Charlotte Taylor Fryar examines the geography and ecology of Washington\, D.C. with all manner of flora and fauna as her witness. The ecological traces of human inhabitancy provide her with imaginative access into America’s past\, for her true subject is the origin of our splintered nation and racially divided capital. \nFrom the gentrified neighborhood of Shaw to George Washington’s slave labor camp at Mount Vernon\, Potomac Fever maps the troubled histories of the United States by leading us along the less-trafficked trails and side streets of our capital city\, steeped in the legacy of white supremacy and colonialism. In the end\, Fryar offers hope for how “we might grow a society guided by the ethics and values of the places we live.” \nA compelling synthesis of historical\, environmental\, and personal narrative\, Potomac Fever exposes the roots of our national myths\, awash in the waters of America’s renowned river. \nAbout the author: Charlotte Taylor Fryar is a writer\, historian\, educator\, and herbalist. She holds a PhD in American Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and lives in Glen Echo\, Maryland\, less than seven hundred feet from the banks of the Potomac River. Potomac Fever: Reflections on the Nation’s River is her first book.

SUMMARY:Sarah Adler: Finders Keepers
DESCRIPTION:New book alert! Ready for your next summer romance? On Tuesday\, June 24 at C. Burr Artz Public Library from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm as we celebrate the release of local author Sarah Adler’s latest book Finders Keepers! Sarah will be discussing her work with fellow romance author Katie Duggan. Following their conversation\, Sarah will answer questions and sign books. \nClick here to preorder a signed and personalized copy of Finders Keepers! Copies will also be available for purchase at the book launch event. \nThis event is presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries and is free and open to the public. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: Two estranged best friends find that a long-abandoned treasure hunt might be the key to a fresh start—for both their futures and their feelings\, from USA Today bestselling author Sarah Adler. \nLast week\, Nina Hunnicutt was a professor about to move into a gorgeous new apartment with her long-term boyfriend. Now\, she’s single\, unemployed\, and living with her parents. Even more surprising is the fact that Quentin Bell\, her childhood neighbor (and okay\, fine\, crush)\, is also back in town—and wants to resume the treasure hunt that ended their friendship almost two decades ago. \nHoping the reward promised to whoever finds the rumored riches left behind by the town’s eccentric turn-of-the-century seltzer magnate will help her get her life back on track\, Nina agrees. Granted\, last time the search resulted in a broken heart and seventeen years of silence. But Nina’s older and wiser now—surely things will be different. \nExcept\, Quentin is also older and wiser…not to mention distractingly handsome. As they resume their hunt\, Nina and Quentin begin to rediscover all the things they once loved best about each other. But unlike the treasure\, the secrets that left them empty-handed the first time refuse to stay buried. If there’s any hope of finding what they’re looking for—and for a future together—Nina and Quentin will have to be brave enough to excavate their past as well. \nAbout the author: USA Today bestselling author Sarah Adler writes romantic comedies about lovable weirdos finding their happily ever afters. She lives in Maryland with her husband\, daughter\, and very mischievous cat. When not working\, you can find her attempting to course-correct an ill-advised late afternoon nap with an equally ill-advised late afternoon coffee\, as she is incapable of ever learning a lesson. \nAbout the moderator: Katie Duggan is a New England transplant currently living in Northern Virginia. She writes romances that give fat\, neurodivergent\, and queer characters spicy happily-ever-afters. When Katie’s not writing or being kept up at night by her characters\, she can be found drinking Doctor Pepper\, going to therapy\, convincing people to read her favorite books\, and doing whatever hobbies give her the most dopamine at the moment.

SUMMARY:Susie Dumond: Bed and Breakup
DESCRIPTION:What if the happily ever after didn’t work out? Join us on Thursday\, June 26 from 6:30 pm-7:30 pm to find out in Susie Dumond’s latest novel\, Bed and Breakup\, in which a separated couple crosses paths once again\, this time to renovate and sell the inn that they opened together when they first married. Susie will discuss her work with local romance author Andie Burke\, then answer questions and sign books. Copies of Bed and Breakup will be available for purchase at the event. \nThis free\, public event will be hosted in partnership with Give Rise Studio at their location. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: As newlyweds\, Molly and Robin made the Hummingbird Inn into a trendy destination for queer travelers in the quirky mountain town of Eureka Springs\, Arkansas. But when their career ambitions drove them apart\, the young couple separated\, handed over the property’s upkeep to a management firm\, and never looked back. \nSeven years later\, Molly and Robin return to the Hummingbird Inn for very different reasons. Molly is an artist on the rise who’s been commissioned to create pieces in Eureka Springs; Robin is a celebrity chef whose restaurants have gone belly up. Both feel entitled to their shared property\, furious that the other refuses to leave\, and resort to a series of escalating pranks in the hopes of scaring the other off. When neither woman budges\, they resolve to renovate the bed and breakfast\, sell it\, and at last go their separate ways. But their work to restore the inn’s vintage charm reignites memories—and chemistry—that make it hard to say goodbye. \nAbout the author: Susie Dumond is a queer writer originally from Little Rock\, Arkansas. She is the author of Queerly Beloved\, Looking for a Sign\, and Bed and Breakup\, and she also talks about books as a senior contributor at Book Riot and a bookseller at her local indie bookstore. Susie lives in Washington\, D.C.\, with her spouse\, Mickey\, and her cat\, Maple. When she’s not writing or reading\, you can find her baking cupcakes or belting karaoke at the nearest gay bar. \nAbout the moderator: Andie Burke writes books with queer kissing and happily ever afters. She was originally an English major who decided to jump into a pediatric nursing career. Her writing is inspired by over a decade spent working in hospitals with patients of all ages. After the last couple years spent in the pandemic ER\, she escaped to an outpatient pediatric sedation unit. Andie lives in a blue house in Maryland with an alarming number of books and an embarrassing number of ultra-fine point pens. When she’s not writing\, she’s probably feeding snacks to the two small human creatures who live with her or trying not to kill her chaotic houseplants. You can find her on Bookstagram adding to her ever-expanding TBR or letting her ADHD brain happily dissociate while listening to Taylor Swift.

SUMMARY:Kate Myers: Salty
DESCRIPTION:Put on your sunglasses for this fun summer murder mystery! Join us on Tuesday\, July 8 from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm as we dive in with Kate Myers and her new book\, Salty. This story follows two sisters who team up to uncover the real designs behind their rich employer’s shady development plans. She lives for storms on the Caribbean Sea and stingrays\, has amazing pocket knife skills\, and wouldn’t be caught dead socializing on the boat. She uses those knives to cut her own hair\, and it shows. \nHer sister Helen is ten years younger and always wears accessories that prompt people to ask about her travels. The two haven’t seen each other in years. Helen’s made a career out of putting the hospitable in hospitality and was just fired yet again for hooking up with a guest. With every HR bridge burned\, she joins Denise’s crew working the boats. \nThe clashing sisters are immediately thrown into the deep—their first charter is the Falcon family\, shady real estate developers who mowed down Helen and Denise’s childhood home to build condos along the beautiful peninsula here. The Falcons treat everyone like pawns—from their future daughter-in-law\, gullible Poppy\, who has no idea what she’s marrying into\, to the uptight yacht concierge\, Geoff\, who’s looking for love in very wrong places. \nWhen the Falcon condo building collapses—and a dead body turns up beside it—Helen and Denise comb through the boat\, marina\, and beyond to uncover just how low the Falcons will sink in order to stay afloat—before the big storm wipes out the evidence. \nAbout the author: Kate Myers is the author of the national bestseller Excavations. Her writing has appeared in Elle\, BuzzFeed\, and Self magazines. She studied archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania and has lived in New York\, Los Angeles\, and Washington\, DC\, where she’s worked for CBS in television development and for CollegeHumor. She now resides in Annapolis\, Maryland\, with her husband\, daughters\, and dog. \nAbout the moderator: A card-carrying cinephile and native New Englander\, novelist Erika Montgomery lives with her family in western Maryland. She is the author of A Summer to Remember and Our Place on the Island.

SUMMARY:Beth Norcross and Leah Rampy: Discovering the Spiritual Wisdom of Trees
DESCRIPTION:LOCATION + TIME CHANGE \nPlease join us Thursday\, July 10 at Give Rise Studio from 7 pm-8 pm for an evening with authors Beth Norcross and Leah Rampy as they discuss their latest book\, Discovering the Spiritual Wisdom of Trees. Drawing on their collective knowledge of spirituality\, ecology\, and forestry\, Beth and Leah reveal the profound impact trees can have on our lives. After discussing their work\, Beth and Leah will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Discovering the Spiritual Wisdom of Trees will be available for purchase at the event. \nThis event is presented in partnership with the Multi-Faith Alliance of Climate Stewards. It is free and open to the public. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: There is great wisdom to learn from trees\, and when we connect intimately with them\, we can deepen our spiritual lives and grow in the understanding that all beings are part of the fabric of the holy. \nThere’s something about a majestic redwood\, the sweet pink blossoms of a cherry tree in spring\, or even a scrawny little pine that moves us in ways we don’t fully comprehend. Trees have much to offer as soul friends\, and their millennia of growth and loss provides deep wisdom\, if we pay attention. The Spiritual Wisdom of Trees encourages us to revel in the beauty and wonder of trees as they increase our capacity to bear witness to loss and grief and model adaptation and resilience. Integrating science and spirituality\, coauthors Beth Norcross and Leah Rampy explore the knowledge held within the living world of trees and planted within each of us. \nDrawing on extensive experience in both forest ecology and spirituality\, Norcross and Rampy invite us into a deep mutual relationship with trees\, whose wisdom provides comfort\, resilience\, guidance\, and hope during these challenging times. \nExpanding on their popular six-week video course offered through The Center for Spirituality in Nature\, Norcross and Rampy offer us guidance and practices based on their experiences leading walks\, retreats\, and pilgrimages for over two decades. Having witnessed the profound healing and restorative power of trees\, they offer us the wisdom of trees as wordless ministers to weary souls. When we learn the ecology of the forest and how to be present to the trees\, our eyes are opened to the awe and wonder of our world\, deepening our sense of sacred oneness. \nAbout the authors: \nWith training in spirituality\, ecology\, and forestry\, Beth Norcross founded the Center for Spirituality in Nature\, which offers opportunities to deepen spirituality through nature and to nurture loving relationships with Earth and Spirit. She speaks\, writes\, and leads programs that encourage people to open to the natural world for delight\, wonder\, guidance\, and spiritual deepening. She co-founded the Green Seminary Initiative\, which infuses Earth care into theological education. An adjunct professor at Wesley Theological Seminary\, where she earned a master of theological studies and a doctor of ministry\, she has created and taught classes related to faith and ecology. She lives with her husband in Virginia. \nLeah Rampy is a writer and retreat leader who weaves ecology\, spirituality\, and stories to encourage deeper connections to the natural world and strengthen the ties between Earth and the human soul. She is the author of Earth and Soul: Reconnecting amid Climate Chaos. She has led spiritual pilgrimages\, retreats\, and seminars and is founder and leader of Church of the Wild Two Rivers. She holds a PhD in curriculum from Indiana University\, has taught in public schools and universities\, held leadership roles in Fortune 100 companies\, and headed a nonprofit organization dedicated to contemplative living and leadership. Rampy resides with her husband in a cohousing community in West Virginia.

SUMMARY:Linda Murphy Marshall and Rhonda Zimlich
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, July 20 from 2:00 pm-3:00pm\, please join us for a special afternoon at the Middletown Senior Center with authors Linda Murphy Marshall and Rhonda Zimlich. Linda and Rhonda will discuss their novels Immersion and Raising Panic\, focusing on the protagonists’ journeys of self-discovery. After their talk\, the authors will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Immersion and Raising Panic will be available for purchase at the event. \nLocation: Middletown Senior Center – 101 Prospect St\, Middletown\, MD 21769 \nThis event is free and open to the public. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout Linda Murphy Marshall: Linda Murphy Marshall has a Ph.D. in Hispanic Languages and Literature and an MA in Spanish from St. Louis University\, where she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa\, and she earned an MFA in Creative Writing at Vermont College of Fine Arts. In addition\, she worked as a multi-linguist for the government for nearly 30 years\, studying and working in more than a dozen languages. For five years she worked as a Senior Research Scientist at the University of Maryland’s Center for Advanced Study of Language/CASL\, a language think tank\, specializing in African languages. Her 2022 memoir\, Ivy Lodge: A Memoir of Translation and Discovery received a starred review from Kirkus. Her award-winning second memoir\, Immersion: A Linguist’s Memoir\, was published in 2024. She is an Associate for the National Museum of Language and a docent at the Library of Congress in Washington\, D.C. Her essays have appeared in more than two dozen publications\, including the Los Angeles Review\, Dorothy Parker’s Ashes\, The Catamaran Literary Reader\, Maryland Literary Review\, Brevity’s Nonfiction Blog\, and elsewhere. https://lindamurphymarshall.com \nAbout Immersion: Immersion is a memoir that takes the reader on a captivating emotional and physical journey through Linda Murphy Marshall’s life: from the longstanding\, crippling impact of family members’ low expectations and abuse\, to her discovery as a young adult that she possesses special skills in foreign languages. \nLinda is taught from an early age that she has little of value to offer the world. But her love of and affinity for languages enables her to create a new life—to separate herself from her toxic environment and to build a successful\, decades-long career as a professional multilinguist. It’s a rewarding vocation\, but a challenging one: her assignments with the US federal government take her on some hair-raisingly dangerous journeys\, some to countries with unstable governments and even active war zones. But these sometimes-harrowing experiences teach her how to open the “windows” around her\, unearth her true self\, and develop a healthy sense of self-worth—and ultimately\, paradoxically\, her work and travel so far from home allow her to come home to herself. \nAbout Rhonda Zimlich: Rhonda Zimlich is the Director of the MFA in Creative Writing Program at American University in Washington\, DC. Her debut novel\, Raising Panic\, won the 2023 Book Award from Steel Toe Books. Her writing focuses on history\, grief\, and intergenerational trauma\, with an occasional ghost story. She is also the recipient of the 2024 Nonfiction award from Barely South Review\, the 2021 Mental Health Awareness Contest for Fiction from Please See Me\, the 2020 Literary Award in Nonfiction from Dogwood Journal at Fairfield University (that same essay earned her an honorable mention in America’s Best Essays\, 2021). Additional work has appeared in Brevity\, American Story Review\, Santa Fe Writers Project\, Chestnut Review\, and more. More at www.rhondazimlich.com \nAbout Raising Panic: Set in 1978\, a time of Ditto jeans and rabbit’s foot keychains\, Raising Panic captures the bond of sisters struggling to find security in an alcoholic home and their attempt to escape. PJ McCormack wants nothing more than to leave her rural valley and alcoholic mother\, the way her father did years earlier. But she cannot leave behind her nine-year-old sister\, Panic. Instead\, she teaches Panic about survival\, hoping to prepare her to someday leave. After Panic witnesses the historic PSA 182 jetliner crash (the first televised mass-casualty event in the U.S.)\, the family is thrown into crisis\, solidifying the sisters’ plan to leave. As their situation spins out of control\, they’ll learn the reason behind their father’s disappearance\, the source of rabbit’s foot keychains\, and the origin of Panic’s name.

SUMMARY:Richard C. Harwood: The New Civic Path
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, July 24 from 6:00-7:30 pm\, Curious Iguana and Frederick County Public Libraries are excited to welcome Rich Harwood\, author of The New Civic Path. Rich has been working with communities for almost 40 years\, and he has proof that social change starts locally. Rich will share how community members can restore hope and belief in each other\, their community\, and their nation. After his presentation\, Rich will answer questions and sign books. Copies of The New Civic Path will be available for purchase at the event. \nThis free\, public event will be held in the community room at the C. Burr Artz Public Library branch in Downtown Frederick. \nFor accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: The New Civic Path: Restoring Our Belief in One Another and Our Nation \nWe are suffering from a crisis of belief in our country today.  So many people have lost faith in America—in our leaders\,  institutions\, and even one another. The status quo is not  working for far too many of us. Our central task today is to  meet this historic moment. But how do we grow our belief that we can get things done together—not as Republicans  or Democrats or Independents\, but as Americans?  How do we rebuild trust and reclaim agency? \nIn this deeply personal manifesto written while crisscrossing the country for his “Enough. Time Build.” civic campaign\, Richard C. Harwood reveals how we can address the fundamental challenges holding us back in America today. We must dedicate ourselves to forging a new civic path that grows our belief that we can move forward amid our real differences. \nThe New Civic Path is a must-read for those who want to spark civic renewal and get our communities and the country moving again. \nAbout the author: Richard C. Harwood\, President and Founder of The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation\, is an innovator\, author\, and speaker. For 35+ years\, he has devoted his career to revitalizing the nation’s hardest-hit communities\, transforming the world’s largest organizations\, and reconnecting institutions to society. He has been recruited to solve some of the most difficult problems of our time\, including being called into Newtown\, CT\, after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. He has appeared in numerous national media outlets and has written scores of articles\, groundbreaking reports\, and nine books. In 2025\, Rich and the Institute are doubling down on the success of last year’s “Enough. Time to Build.” Campaign with the Campaign for the New Civic Path\, anchored by Rich’s manifesto\, The New Civic Path: Restoring Our Belief in One Another and Our Nation.

SUMMARY:Laura Resau: The Alchemy of Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered about the magic it takes to craft a story? Join us on Sunday\, August 10 from 2:00- 3:00 pm at C. Burr Artz Library to hear from Laura Resau as she discusses the writing process behind her latest novel The Alchemy of Flowers. The story follows a woman who takes a unique job in France tending to an ancient garden\, wherein she discovers new friendships and a mystery that will change her life. Following her presentation\, Laura will answer questions and sign books. Copies of The Alchemy of Flowers will be available for purchase at the event. \nThis event is free and open to the public. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nThis event is presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. \nAbout the book: A broken woman. A mysterious job ad. A chance to heal in French castle gardens–but strange things are growing behind the ancient stone walls. This debut adult novel is an enchanting\, modern-day take on The Secret Garden\, sprinkled with magic. Perfect for fans of Sarah Addison Allen. \nHelp Wanted: In search of a gardener for the ancient walled Jardins du Paradis in the South of France. Unique and rustic lodging provided. Off the grid in all ways. One must grow flowers from one’s merde . . . \nExhausted by fruitless attempts to make a family\, Eloise takes the chance of a lifetime to answer an ad in a French gardening magazine. To fly away from her life in the States and tend to both her shattered heart and the flowers of Paradise. And best of all for her . . . \nAbsolutely no children allowed on the premises. \nWithin the high garden walls\, Eloise starts to learn the strange rules of the elusive estate owner. Living and working in isolation with her three companions\, she finds her heart opening again to friendship–and realizes she’s drawn to the handyman\, Raphael. The flowers whisper to her\, enchanting\, delighting\, healing. But why are the workers forbidden from going out during dusk? Who is the “Goddess of the Garden”? Is her mind playing tricks on her\, or does she see a woodsprite flitting through the trees? The giggles and glimpses of a little girl haunt her and make her question: What is real in Paradise and what is illusion? \nEloise tries to rationalize her uneasy feelings and the darkness she uncovers beneath the garden’s lush beauty\, but as she digs deeper into the mysteries of her sanctuary\, she begins to suspect there’s a child on the grounds–who may be in danger. When Paradise becomes a deadly prison\, she must risk everything to protect her newfound family and claim her second chance at happiness. \n“The Alchemy of Flowers captivates the senses as well as the imagination in a magical tale of healing and forgiveness. Resau has written with great heart an eerie yet deeply touching story that keeps the pages turning until the very end.” –Melissa Payne\, bestselling author of In the Beautiful Dark and The Wild Road Home \nAbout the author: Laura Resau is the author of The Alchemy of Flowers\, her debut novel for adults\, and eleven acclaimed books for young people. Her novels won five Colorado Book Awards and appear on best-of book lists from Oprah\, the American Library Association\, and more. Trilingual and with a cultural anthropology background\, she’s lived in Provence and Oaxaca\, and now teaches creative writing at Western Colorado University. Lonely and bearing the brunt of her mother’s endless grievances\, Ellie dreams for a friend to alleviate her isolation. \nLuckily\, on the first day of school\, she meets Homa\, a kind girl with a brave and irrepressible spirit. Together\, the two girls play games\, learn to cook in the stone kitchen of Homa’s warm home\, wander through the colorful stalls of the Grand Bazaar\, and share their ambitions of becoming “lion women.” \nBut their happiness is disrupted when Ellie and her mother are afforded the opportunity to return to their previous bourgeois life. Now a popular student at the best girls’ high school in Iran\, Ellie’s memories of Homa begin to fade. Years later\, however\, her sudden reappearance in Ellie’s privileged world alters the course of both of their lives. \nTogether\, the two young women come of age and pursue their own goals for meaningful futures. But as the political turmoil in Iran builds to a breaking point\, one earth-shattering betrayal will have enormous consequences. \n“Reminiscent of The Kite Runner and My Brilliant Friend\, The Lion Women of Tehran is a mesmerizing tale” (BookPage) of love and courage\, and a sweeping exploration of how profoundly we are shaped by those we meet when we are young. \nAbout the author: Marjan Kamali\, born in Turkey to Iranian parents\, spent her childhood in Kenya\, Germany\, Turkey\, Iran\, and the United States. Burr Artz Public Library in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. This event is free and open to the public. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the books:  \nA Game in Yellow: Euphoria meets Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke in this latest novel by the Bram Stoker Award–winning author Hailey Piper\, following a couple whose search to spice up their sex life leads them down a path of madness. \nA kink-fixated couple\, Carmen and Blanca\, have been in a rut. That is until Blanca discovers the enigmatic Smoke in an under-street drug den\, who holds pages to a strange play\, The King in Yellow. Read too much\, and you’ll fall into madness. But read just a little and pull back\, and it gives you the adrenaline rush of survivor’s euphoria\, leading Carmen to fall into a game of lust at a nightmare’s edge. \nAs the line blurs between the world Carmen knows and the one that she visits after reading from the play\, she begins to desire more time in this other world no matter what horrors she brings back with her. \nBram Stoker Award–winning author Hailey Piper masterfully blends horror\, erotica\, and psychological thriller in this captivating and chilling story. \nThe End of The World as We Know It: An original short story anthology based on master storyteller Stephen King’s #1 New York Times bestselling classic The Stand! \nSince its initial publication in 1978\, The Stand has been considered Stephen King’s seminal masterpiece of apocalyptic fiction\, with millions of copies sold and adapted twice for television. Although there are other extraordinary works exploring the unraveling of human society\, none have been as influential as this iconic novel—generations of writers have been impacted by its dark yet ultimately hopeful vision of the end and new beginning of civilization\, and its stunning array of characters. \nNow for the first time\, Stephen King has fully authorized a return to the harrowing world of The Stand through this original short story anthology as presented by award-winning authors and editors Christopher Golden and Brian Keene. Bringing together some of today’s greatest and most visionary writers\, The End of the World As We Know It features unforgettable\, all-new stories set during and after (and some perhaps long after) the events of The Stand—brilliant\, terrifying\, and painfully human tales that will resonate with readers everywhere as an essential companion to the classic\, bestselling novel. \nAbout the author: Hailey Piper is the Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Queen of Teeth\, A Game in Yellow\, All the Hearts You Eat\, and other books of dark fiction. She’s also the author of over 100 short stories appearing in Weird Tales\, The End of the World As We Know It\, and elsewhere\, with non-fiction appearing in Writer’s Digest\, Library Journal\, and more. She lives with her wife in Maryland and can be found at www.haileypiper.com.  \nAbout the moderator: Jessica McHugh is a 3x Bram Stoker Award-nominated poet\, a multi-genre novelist\, & an internationally-produced playwright who spends her days surrounded by artistic inspiration at a Maryland tattoo shop. She’s had thirty-one books published in sixteen years\, including her Elgin Award-nominated blackout poetry collection\, “The Quiet Ways I Destroy You\,” her sci-fi bizarro romp\, “The Green Kangaroos\,” and her cross-generational horror series\, “The Gardening Guidebooks Trilogy.” Explore the growing worlds of Jessica McHugh at www.McHughniverse.com.

SUMMARY:Lacey N. Dunham: The Belles
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Curious Iguana from 6:00-7:00 pm on Friday\, September 12 for a meet-and-greet with author Lacey N. Dunham as she promotes her debut novel\, The Belles. This dark\, coming-of-age story centers on an exclusive clique that tests the boundaries in risky ways as they navigate their way through college in the 1950s. Copies of The Belles will be available for purchase at the signing. \nThis event is free and open to the public. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: In this richly atmospheric\, dark academia debut novel\, a young woman with a secretive past will risk everything—including her life—to fit in. \nBelles never tell… \nIt’s 1951 at the secluded Bellerton College\, and Deena Williams is an outsider doing her best to blend in with her wealthy and perfectly groomed peers. Infamous for its strict rules as much as its prestige\, attending Bellerton could give Deena the comfortable life she’s always dreamed of. \nShe quickly forms an alliance with the five other freshmen on her floor\, and soon they are singled out by the president’s wife as the most promising girls of their class\, who anoints them: The Belles. They walk the college’s halls in menacing unison\, matching velvet ribbons in their hair. But no sisterhood comes without secrets\, and the Belles are no exception. Playing cruel pranks on their dormitory housemother and embarking on boundary-shattering night games\, the Belles test the limits of the campus rules. \nBut as Deena begins to piece together the sinister history of Bellerton\, her own past threatens to come to light\, forcing her to make a dangerous choice. A chilling and seductive coming-of-age story\, The Belles is an excavation of the dark side of girlhood\, the intricacies of privilege\, and the unbridled desire to belong at any cost. \nAbout the author: Lacey N. Dunham is the author of The Belles. She has received support from the Elizabeth George Foundation\, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities\, the Sewanee Writers Conference as a Tennessee Williams scholar\, and Catapult as a merit scholar. SUMMARY:Andie Burke: With Stars in Her Eyes
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at C. Burr Artz Library on Tuesday\, September 16 from 6:00-7:00 pm to celebrate all things “sapphic bookstore romance” with us and local author Andie Burke! Andie will be discussing her latest novel\, With Stars in Her Eyes\, with local book club host Stephanie Jenks. This story centers on love found in the most bookish of places; when cellist Courtney returns home for a respite from a botched performance and spiraling rumors\, she stumbles into love with a newcomer looking for a fresh start… who happens to work in the tattoo shop next door to Courtney’s best friend’s bookshop. After her conversation\, Andie will answer questions and sign books. \nCopies of With Stars in Her Eyes will be available for purchase at the event but you can preorder signed and personalized copies ahead of time on our website here. \n*Include personalization requests in the notes field at checkout and select “Pick Up” if you’d like to pick it up at the event or shipping if you cannot attend. \n  \nThis free\, public event is presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: A swoon-worthy sapphic bookstore romance about fresh starts and finding that one person who feels like home from breakout author Andie Burke (Fly with Me). \nSeconds from a meteoric career launch\, cellist Courtney Starling suffers a frightening migraine attack during a key performance. While harmful rumors fly\, she escapes to her happy place—her best friend’s Kansas bookshop. Courtney’s working incognito when a scream sends her leaping off a shelving ladder to find the woman who screamed cowering near the register. \nWhen Thea Quinn dropped in for a misdelivered package\, she did not expect a mortifying encounter with a bearded dragon in front of an inconveniently attractive bookseller. Clutching an upcoming book club flyer and the tattered shreds of her dignity\, she heads back to her new piercing job at the tattoo shop next door. She moved to this quirky place for a fresh start. But maybe the meet-disaster was a sign? Maybe Thea needs to branch out beyond her photography hobby and connect with new people…like at a historical romance book club run by a particularly mysterious and sexy bookseller with a pixie cut? \nFriendly lunches become stolen moments between the bookshelves. Courtney and Thea’s old problems feel eons away. But just as their chemistry heats to a combustion point\, consequences from Courtney’s past arrive literally on her doorstep at exactly the wrong moment. New revelations and surprising connections take the pair from feeling joyfully lovestruck to confusingly star-crossed. Both women must decide what they’re willing to give up for happily ever after. \nAbout the author: Andie Burke specializes in big-hearted queer romcoms that kick-off with meet-disasters rather than meet-cutes. When not writing\, she works as a pediatric radiology nurse. She lives with two small but hilarious humans in a Maryland home filled with an alarming number of books\, ultra-fine point pens\, and dehydrated houseplants. She is the author of Fall for Him as well as Fly with Me\, one of Autostraddle’s Best Queer Books of the Year.

SUMMARY:Sy Montgomery and Matt Patterson: The True and Lucky Life of a Turtle
DESCRIPTION:Curious Iguana is excited to welcome New York Times bestselling author Sy Montgomery to celebrate her latest children’s book\, The True and Lucky Life of a Turtle. Sy will be joined by the book’s illustrator\, Matt Patterson\, for a meet & greet at the bookstore on Monday\, September 22 from 5:00-7:00 pm. Copies of The True and Lucky Life of a Turtle will be available for purchase at the signing; readers are also welcome to bring any additional books for Sy and Matt to sign. \nThis event is free and open to the public. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: The bestselling and Sibert Honor–winning creators of The Book of Turtles bring us the true story of a snapping turtle’s extraordinary journey—and the amazing conservationists who helped give him a second chance. This feel-good\, gorgeously illustrated story about beating the odds is complete with inspiring back matter and photos. \nHere is the true story of a very lucky turtle. His story began long ago when he was hatched from a small egg on a late summer day. After decades of traveling between his summer pond behind the firehouse and his winter pond across the street\, he never could have guessed that on one October day he would become _un_lucky . . . \nThe amazing friends and challenges he met along the way are all chronicled by the Sibert Honor–winning duo behind The Book of Turtles in this tribute to the resilience and good luck of their dear friend\, a very lucky turtle indeed. \nAbout the author: In addition to researching films\, articles\, and thirty-nine books\, National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestseller Sy Montgomery has been honored with a Sibert Medal\, three Sibert Honors\, two Science Book and Film Prizes from the National Association for the Advancement of Science\, four honorary degrees\, and many other awards. She lives in Hancock\, New Hampshire\, with her husband\, Howard Mansfield\, and their border collie\, Thurber. \nAbout the illustrator: Matt Patterson received a degree from the Art Institute of Boston in illustration. His vivid\, lifelike art has won national and international acclaim\, including the Golden Turtle Award and—twice—the Roger Tory Peterson Wild America Art Award. His work has hung in prestigious galleries\, museums\, and shows\, including the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum’s Birds in Art exhibition\, and he is a fellow at the Explorers Club in New York. Matt’s debut picture book\, The Book of Turtles\, was a Sibert Honor Book.
