After spending the day visiting schools\, Megan and Michelle will be at the Iguana in the evening to meet fans and sign books! \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:The Reader: A Witchy Book Fair for Adults
DESCRIPTION:Join Attaboy Beer and Curious Iguana for our third annual witchy book fair for adults on Friday\, October 24\, from 5 pm-8 pm at Attaboy Barrel House. Stratton (In Deadly Company)\, Alex Sharp (Magdalena Between Dimensions)\, and Melinda Beatty (The Witch’s Table). Festive attire and costumes are encouraged and welcomed! \nAbout the authors: \nL.S. Stratton is an NAACP Image Award-nominated author and former crime newspaper reporter who has written more than a dozen books under different pen names in just about every genre from thrillers to romance to historical fiction. She currently lives in Maryland with her husband\, their daughter\, and their tuxedo cat. \nAlexandra Sharp is a writer and editor living in Maryland with her husband\, two children\, and her giant dog\, June. SUMMARY:Melinda Beatty: The Witch's Table
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Curious Iguana at 6:00 pm on Wednesday\, October 29 for a meet-and-greet with local author and Curious Iguana bookseller Melinda Beatty as she promotes her book\, The Witch’s Table. After spending the day visiting schools\, Melinda will be at the Iguana in the evening to meet fans and sign books! \nThis event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event. \nAbout the book: When a young witch inherits a rather cantankerous family heirloom; she has to figure out how to outwit her cursed companion. \nThe Table had been in the Witch’s family for a very long time. No one remembered who had cursed it to stay with them forever\, but none of them liked it much. The young witch initially tries to thwart the Table’s shenanigans. But after some time living with the Table\, she begins to notice how cold the kitchen floor is on a brisk winter’s day\, how many nicks and scratches the Table has endured\, and how hard it is to stand on all four legs for so many hours\, and she comes to realize compassion will get her further than cleverness. This charming and hilarious picture book is about empathy and trying to find common ground with the people–or furniture–around you. \nAbout the author: Melinda Beatty has had years of practice trying to explain to others why she was just having an imaginary conversation between two people that don’t exist\, so becoming a writer seemed like the best way to stop everyone from looking at her funny. After years of narrowboat living on the English canals\, she and her British husband are now back on dry land in Maryland\, where by day\, she’s a mild-mannered indie bookseller\, and by night\, she wrangles words\, crafts projects\, and raises a Labrador and two fierce mini-women.

SUMMARY:Charles Ferguson: Presidential Seclusion
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at C. Burr Artz Public Library on Monday\, November 10\, from 6:00-7:00 pm to hear from author Charles Ferguson as he discusses his new book Presidential Seclusion: The Power of Camp David. This enlightening book shares the little-known impact of this mountain retreat on the nation and the world. Following his presentation\, Charles will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Presidential Seclusion will be available for purchase at the event. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: Behind the gates of Camp David—where presidents find solitude\, forge diplomacy\, and shape history in absolute secrecy. \nThe Presidential Retreat Camp David is shrouded in mystery\, and rightfully so. The hidden retreat atop the Catoctin Mountains is the one place the President\, First Family\, and invited guests can gather in absolute secrecy for relaxation\, rejuvenation\, and world-changing decisions. Because of this dedication to privacy\, and a desire to maintain the mystery and exclusivity of the last bastion of solitude for the President\, few comprehensive accounts exist detailing the storied history of Camp David and the role the “Spirit of Camp David” plays in world affairs. \nPresidential Seclusion provides an exclusive account of the mysterious and storied retreat. Extensively researched from Presidential Archives as well as from the pages of Presidential memoirs\, this non-partisan\, informative account weaves exclusive stories into a tapestry revealing the importance of Camp David on diplomacy and world history. Written by the former Camp David Historian\, this personalized tour of the exclusive retreat makes tree-shrouded trails\, majestic vistas\, and rooms where history happened over the last 80 years accessible to everyone. As you read\, the “Spirit of Camp David” is revealed to infuse everyone who works and visits the President’s private mountain retreat\, mainly how Camp David personally affected its primary guests\, the fifteen First Families fortunate to call the private retreat a second home. \nAbout the author: Charles Ferguson spent three and a half years as the Camp David Historian and Presidential Chaplain. During that time\, he coordinated with 14 Presidential Libraries to better tell the true story of the President’s exclusive mountaintop retreat\, scouring records and memoirs for engaging stories\, providing glimpses into the hidden world of Camp David. Conducting hundreds of tours for personal guests of the President\, his accessible storytelling draws you into the wonders of Camp David as if you are walking the historical private trails with your own personal tour guide. \nHis writings have appeared on the Faith and Leadership website and in The Presbyterian Outlook\, Presbyterians Today\, and the United States Naval Institute’s Proceedings magazine.

SUMMARY:Matt Tavares: Dasher and the Polar Bear
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Curious Iguana at 3:30 pm on Sunday\, November 16 for a meet-and-greet with author Matt Tavares as he promotes his new book\, Dasher and the Polar Bear. Matt will be at the Iguana till 4:30 pm to meet fans and sign books; a personalized book will make a great holiday gift! \nThis event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event. \nAbout the book: One bright night just before Christmas\, Dasher the reindeer is out admiring the stunning colors of the northern lights when she meets George\, a sweet polar bear. Astounded to see that Dasher can fly\, George confides that he has dreamed of soaring through the sky himself. Dasher would like nothing more than to bestow some Christmas magic on her new friend\, but their flying lesson turns out to be a disappointing failure. Even Dasher\, an intrepid reindeer in the habit of giving—not giving up—begins to wonder if anyone can make George’s dream take flight. \nIn this sparkling new Christmas story\, Matt Tavares\, New York Times best-selling author of Dasher and its sequel\, Dasher Can’t Wait for Christmas\, is back to remind us that sometimes the best gift we can receive is simply to bear witness to wonder—and that not all presents fit inside Santa’s bag. \nAbout the author: Matt Tavares is the author-illustrator of the New York Times best-selling picture book Dasher and its sequel Dasher Can’t Wait for Christmas\, Red and Lulu\, the graphic novel Hoops\, and several sports biographies\, including Becoming Babe Ruth and Growing Up Pedro. He is also the illustrator of Twenty-One Steps: Guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by Jeff Gottesfeld\, The Gingerbread Pirates by Kristin Kladstrup\, ’Twas the Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore\, and Over the River and Through the Wood by L. Maria Child\, among many other picture books. Matt Tavares lives in Ogunquit\, Maine.

SUMMARY:Nilah Magruder: Creaky Acres
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Curious Iguana at 6:00 pm on Wednesday\, November 19 for a meet-and-greet with author and illustrator Nilah Magruder as she promotes her latest book\, Creaky Acres. With her ragtag team of equestrians\, Nora learns it’s okay to stand out and steps into her power as a leader\, realizing that being a rider isn’t just about winning—or maybe that winning just might look different than what she’d thought. \n“Readers will fall in love with Nora and her quirky crew\, the world of Creaky Acres\, and all the horses . . . and cows . . . and possums!” —Varian Johnson\, award-winning author of Twins \nAbout the illustrator: Nilah Magruder is the author of M.F.K.\, How to Find a Fox\, and Wutaryoo. SUMMARY:Emily Austin: Is This a Cry For Help?
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Frederick Book Arts Center on Monday\, January 12 from 6:30-7:30 pm for a delightful evening with bestselling author Emily Austin! We’ll be celebrating her latest release\, Is This a Cry For Help?\, a day early! Emily will be in-conversation with local author Andie Burke. This story is about a librarian who\, after experiencing a mental breakdown\, returns to work just as her community’s frustrations over book bans reaches its boiling point. Following her talk\, Emily will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Is This a Cry For Help? will be available for purchase at the event. \nLocation: Frederick Book Arts Center (127 S Carroll St\, Frederick\, MD 21701) \nThis event is free and open to the public. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: The bestselling “queen of darkly quirky\, endearingly flawed heroines” (Sarah Haywood\, author of The Cactus)\, returns with a luminous new novel following a librarian who comes back to work after a mental breakdown only to confront book-banning crusaders in an empowering story of grief\, love\, and the power of libraries. \nDarcy’s life turned out better than she could have ever imagined. She is a librarian at the local branch\, while her wife Joy runs a book binding service. Between the two of them\, there is no more room on their shelves with their ample book collections\, various knickknacks and bobbles\, and dried bouquets. Rounding out their ideal life is two cats and a sun-soaked house by the lake. \nBut when Darcy receives the news that her ex-boyfriend\, Ben\, has passed away\, she spirals into a pit of guilt and regret\, resulting in a mental breakdown and medical leave from the library. When she returns to work\, she is met by unrest in her community and protests surrounding intellectual freedom\, resulting in a call for book bans and a second look at the branch’s upcoming DEI programs. \nThrough the support of her community\, colleagues\, and the personal growth that results from examining her previous relationships\, Darcy comes into her own agency and the truest version of herself. Is This a Cry for Help? not only offers a moving portrait of queer life after coming of age but also powerfully explores questions about sexuality\, community\, and the importance of libraries. \nAbout the author: Emily Austin is the author of We Could Be Rats\, Everyone in This Room Will Someday Be Dead\, Interesting Facts About Space\, and the poetry collection Gay Girl Prayers. She was born in Ontario\, Canada\, and received two writing grants from the Canadian Council for the Arts. She studied English literature and library science at Western University. She currently lives in Ottawa\, in the territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation. \nAbout the moderator: Andie Burke specializes in big-hearted queer romcoms that kick-off with meet-disasters rather than meet-cutes. When not writing\, she works as a pediatric radiology nurse. She lives with two small but hilarious humans in a Maryland home filled with an alarming number of books\, ultra-fine point pens\, and dehydrated houseplants. She is the author of Fall for Him as well as Fly with Me\, one of Autostraddle’s Best Queer Books of the Year.

SUMMARY:Richard Bell: The American Revolution and the Fate of the World
DESCRIPTION:With America’s 250th birthday on the horizon\, come join us on Thursday\, January 22\, from 6:30 pm-7:30 pm for a fascinating look into the past with author Richard Bell as he discusses his new book The American Revolution and the Fate of the World. Following his talk\, Richard will answer questions and sign books. Copies of The American Revolution and the Fate of the World will be available for purchase at the event. \nLocation: C. Burr Artz Public Library – 110 E Patrick St\, Frederick\, MD 21701 \nThis free\, public event is presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \n\nAbout the book: A prize-winning historian’s fascinating and unfamiliar recasting of America’s war of independence as a transformative international event \nIn this revelatory and enthralling book\, award-winning historian Richard Bell reveals the full breadth and depth of America’s founding event. The American Revolution was not only the colonies’ triumphant liberation from the rule of an overbearing England; it was also a cataclysm that pulled in participants from around the globe and threw the entire world order into chaos. Repositioning the Revolution at the center of an international web\, Bell’s narrative ranges as far afield as India\, Africa\, Central America\, and Australia. As his lens widens\, the “War of Independence” manifests itself as a sprawling struggle that upended the lives of millions of people on every continent and fundamentally transformed the way the world works\, disrupting trade\, restructuring penal systems\, stirring famine\, and creating the first global refugee crisis. Bell conveys the impact of these developments at home and abroad by grounding the narrative in the gripping stories of individuals—including women\, minorities\, and other disenfranchised people. The result is an unforgettable and unexpected work of American history that shifts everything we thought we knew about our creation story. \nAbout the author: Richard Bell is Professor of History at the University of Maryland and author of the book Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and their Astonishing Odyssey Home which was a finalist for the George Washington Prize and the Harriet Tubman Prize. He has held major research fellowships at Yale\, Cambridge\, and the Library of Congress and is the recipient of the National Endowment of the Humanities Public Scholar award and the Andrew Carnegie Fellowship. His new book\, The American Revolution and the Fate of the World\, was published by Penguin in November 2025.

She already feels like an “extra” member of a family that doesn’t have enough money or space. \nThen she finds out her aunt is pregnant with twins\, due soon after Lilac turns thirteen. How could they possibly want her around when they’ll have two more kids in their crowded home? As she struggles to process her feelings about the pregnancy\, Lilac drifts apart from her best friend Callie\, leaving Lilac lonelier than ever. \nIn a timely twist of fate\, Lilac discovers a check sent by her estranged father. Maybe he is the family she’s been looking for… and maybe it’s worth risking everything to find him. After all\, how much does the “extra” kid really have to lose? \nAbout the author: Cordelia Jensen has an MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts and has published four verse novels: Lilac and the Switchback\, Skyscraping\, The Way the Light Bends\, and Every Shiny Thing\, co-authored with Laurie Morrison. Oliver’s book details his journey of learning to read\, which he boldly shared on TikTok; his story continues to inspire many readers and proves the power of reading is invaluable. However\, at age 32\, with big dreams and few tools to actualize them\, he dedicated himself to learning the key skill that had evaded him his entire life: reading. \nOliver has become a TikTok/BookTok sensation for the way he’s candidly documented his decision to learn to read as an adult\, and his struggles and triumphs along the way. Here\, he tells the full story behind his journey for the first time through the 21 key books that shaped and informed his experience. His story reveals the ways in which reading can teach each of us how to be better\, more empathetic people. \nIn just 365 days\, Oliver went from barely being able to read a restaurant menu to closing in on his goal of finishing 100 books in a year. Unread is a moving reminder to all of us that words and stories have power\, and that\, no matter our past\, it’s never too late to grow. \nAbout the author: Oliver James is a California-based personal trainer\, motivational speaker\, literacy activist\, and influencer. He has been featured in or on Today\, NPR\, Jennifer Hudson Show\, Los Angeles Times\, Newsweek\, Rachael Ray\, and ABC News\, among many others. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: A modern spin on Fatal Attraction meets The Hand that Rocks the Cradle\, perfect for fans of The Last Mrs. Parrish. \nStill recovering from a devastating breakup\, 34-year-old Savannah Mitchell has finally managed to put her life back together when she gets the shock of her life—after a brief fling with a man named Max\, she is pregnant. \nWhen she gets in touch to tell him\, he reveals that he’s just gotten back together with his ex\, Madison\, and he will need time to break it to her. Surprisingly\, Madison isn’t upset—in fact\, she’s excited\, and wants to help. \nMax insists Madison has the best of intentions\, but Savannah finds her efforts—popping by uninvited\, demanding lifestyle changes\, and pretty much trying to take over the pregnancy—anything but helpful.
