SUMMARY:Find Waldo Local 2026
DESCRIPTION:Where’s Waldo? In Downtown Frederick\, of course! Celebrating its 14th year in July 2026\, Find Waldo Local has become a beloved summertime event in communities nationwide. This year\, Candlewick Press and the American Booksellers Association are again teaming up with over 300 independent bookstores nationwide\, including us\, Curious Iguana\, for some hide-and-seek fun designed to encourage residents to patronize their local businesses. There is no charge to participate\, and the hunt begins July 1-31. \nFamilies love joining the scavenger hunt to find the iconic children’s book character\, with his red-and-white-striped shirt and black glasses\, hidden in local businesses. Find Waldo Local is a wonderful way to support the Shop Local movement by increasing foot traffic to a variety of stores. \nTo join in the fun\, people can simply pick up a Find Waldo passport at Curious Iguana\, Dancing Bear Toys and Games\, Frederick Visitor Center\, or C. Burr Artz Library starting on Wednesday\, July 1. With each miniature Waldo they spot\, searchers get their card stamped or signed by the participating shops found on the passport. Dress up as Waldo for Super Waldo Saturday on July 25 and get special discounts and promos at a select list of participating businesses when you show you passport at checkout. Stay tuned for more details. \nCollecting store stamps or signatures at thirty or more businesses will entitle diligent seekers entry into a grand-prize drawing for Waldo books and other prizes. All participants are welcome to attend the celebration party at C. Burr Artz Library on Sunday\, August 2\, from 2 pm-3 pm. Prizes are reserved for children 12 and under. To be eligible to win prizes at the celebration\, passports must be turned in to Curious Iguana by Saturday\, August 1\, before closing and participants must be present at the celebration on Sunday\, August 2 to win prizes.

SUMMARY:Michelle L. Cullen: A Field Guide to Murder
DESCRIPTION:Join Curious Iguana on Thursday\, June 25 at Frederick Book Arts Center from 6:00-7:00 pm for an evening of mystery with author Michelle L. Cullen and her new release\, A Field Guide to Murder. The story follows Harry Lancaster\, a retired anthropologist who now spends his days as a nosy neighbor with his binoculars and young caretaker Emma in tow. Michelle will be joined in conversation by fellow mystery writer Melinda Mullet\, author of A Ghostwriter’s Guide to Murder. Following their discussion\, Michelle will answer questions and sign books. \nThis event is free and open to the public. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: A cranky widower and his spirited caregiver team up to solve his neighbor’s murder in this charming and original mystery\, perfect for fans of Richard Osman and Benjamin Stevenson. \nOnce a globe-trotting anthropologist\, Harry Lancaster is now certain that all his grand adventures are behind him. Recently widowed and suffering from a fractured hip\, Harry spends his days and nights behind a pair of binoculars\, nose-deep in his neighbors’ affairs. His millennial caregiver\, Emma\, is determined to get him out of his armchair and back into the world. \nFate intervenes when Harry’s mysterious neighbor\, Sue\, phones\, pleading for help. But instead of rescuing her\, Harry and Emma find Sue dead: poisoned\, days after a break-in at Sue’s house. Harry resolves to find out what happened\, and Emma insists on going along for the ride. Together\, they discover motives and suspects abound in Harry’s quaint condominium community—putting them both in the crosshairs of a cold-blooded killer. \nAbout the author: Michelle L. Cullen has lived and traveled all over the world\, from working as a bilingual secretary in Paris to backpacking around Europe\, Central America\, and Southern Africa to helping rebuild communities after war throughout Africa\, East Asia\, South Asia\, and the Pacific. She obtained her PhD from the London School of Economics’ Sociology Department and her master’s degree in anthropology from Melbourne University in Australia. A fan of adventure\, she has a black belt in Taekwondo\, has summited 900 feet rock climbing\, snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef\, and hiked up an active volcano. She currently lives in Annapolis\, Maryland\, where she’s either doing yoga\, playing outside\, or plotting murder. \nAbout the moderator: Melinda Mullet is the author of the Whisky Business Mysteries\, a six-part series of traditional mysteries set in and around a boutique single malt whisky distillery in Scotland. Her new traditional series begins with\, A Ghostwriter’s Guide to Murder\, set on a houseboat along the Regent’s Canal in London. Melinda is a travel junkie and a life-long advocate for children’s literacy causes both domestic and international. When she is not in the UK\, she lives just outside of Washington\, DC with her whisky-collecting husband and two wild Covid canines named Bailey and Captain Jack. Find her at http://MelindaMullet.com or on Facebook and Insta @‌melindamullet.

SUMMARY:Richard Bell: The American Revolution and the Fate of the World
DESCRIPTION:With America’s 250th birthday on the horizon\, come join us on Thursday\, January 22\, from 6:30 pm-7:30 pm for a fascinating look into the past with author Richard Bell as he discusses his new book The American Revolution and the Fate of the World. Following his talk\, Richard will answer questions and sign books. Copies of The American Revolution and the Fate of the World will be available for purchase at the event. \nLocation: C. Burr Artz Public Library – 110 E Patrick St\, Frederick\, MD 21701 \nThis free\, public event is presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \n\nAbout the book: A prize-winning historian’s fascinating and unfamiliar recasting of America’s war of independence as a transformative international event \nIn this revelatory and enthralling book\, award-winning historian Richard Bell reveals the full breadth and depth of America’s founding event. The American Revolution was not only the colonies’ triumphant liberation from the rule of an overbearing England; it was also a cataclysm that pulled in participants from around the globe and threw the entire world order into chaos. Repositioning the Revolution at the center of an international web\, Bell’s narrative ranges as far afield as India\, Africa\, Central America\, and Australia. As his lens widens\, the “War of Independence” manifests itself as a sprawling struggle that upended the lives of millions of people on every continent and fundamentally transformed the way the world works\, disrupting trade\, restructuring penal systems\, stirring famine\, and creating the first global refugee crisis. Bell conveys the impact of these developments at home and abroad by grounding the narrative in the gripping stories of individuals—including women\, minorities\, and other disenfranchised people. The result is an unforgettable and unexpected work of American history that shifts everything we thought we knew about our creation story. \nAbout the author: Richard Bell is Professor of History at the University of Maryland and author of the book Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and their Astonishing Odyssey Home which was a finalist for the George Washington Prize and the Harriet Tubman Prize. He has held major research fellowships at Yale\, Cambridge\, and the Library of Congress and is the recipient of the National Endowment of the Humanities Public Scholar award and the Andrew Carnegie Fellowship. His new book\, The American Revolution and the Fate of the World\, was published by Penguin in November 2025.

SUMMARY:Melinda Beatty: The Witch's Table
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Curious Iguana at 6:00 pm on Wednesday\, October 29 for a meet-and-greet with local author and Curious Iguana bookseller Melinda Beatty as she promotes her book\, The Witch’s Table. After spending the day visiting schools\, Melinda will be at the Iguana in the evening to meet fans and sign books! \nThis event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event. \nAbout the book: When a young witch inherits a rather cantankerous family heirloom; she has to figure out how to outwit her cursed companion. \nThe Table had been in the Witch’s family for a very long time. No one remembered who had cursed it to stay with them forever\, but none of them liked it much. The young witch initially tries to thwart the Table’s shenanigans. But after some time living with the Table\, she begins to notice how cold the kitchen floor is on a brisk winter’s day\, how many nicks and scratches the Table has endured\, and how hard it is to stand on all four legs for so many hours\, and she comes to realize compassion will get her further than cleverness. This charming and hilarious picture book is about empathy and trying to find common ground with the people–or furniture–around you. \nAbout the author: Melinda Beatty has had years of practice trying to explain to others why she was just having an imaginary conversation between two people that don’t exist\, so becoming a writer seemed like the best way to stop everyone from looking at her funny. After years of narrowboat living on the English canals\, she and her British husband are now back on dry land in Maryland\, where by day\, she’s a mild-mannered indie bookseller\, and by night\, she wrangles words\, crafts projects\, and raises a Labrador and two fierce mini-women.

After decades of traveling between his summer pond behind the firehouse and his winter pond across the street\, he never could have guessed that on one October day he would become _un_lucky . . . \nThe amazing friends and challenges he met along the way are all chronicled by the Sibert Honor–winning duo behind The Book of Turtles in this tribute to the resilience and good luck of their dear friend\, a very lucky turtle indeed. \nAbout the author: In addition to researching films\, articles\, and thirty-nine books\, National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestseller Sy Montgomery has been honored with a Sibert Medal\, three Sibert Honors\, two Science Book and Film Prizes from the National Association for the Advancement of Science\, four honorary degrees\, and many other awards. She lives in Hancock\, New Hampshire\, with her husband\, Howard Mansfield\, and their border collie\, Thurber. \nAbout the illustrator: Matt Patterson received a degree from the Art Institute of Boston in illustration. His vivid\, lifelike art has won national and international acclaim\, including the Golden Turtle Award and—twice—the Roger Tory Peterson Wild America Art Award. His work has hung in prestigious galleries\, museums\, and shows\, including the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum’s Birds in Art exhibition\, and he is a fellow at the Explorers Club in New York. Matt’s debut picture book\, The Book of Turtles\, was a Sibert Honor Book.

SUMMARY:Andie Burke: With Stars in Her Eyes
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at C. Burr Artz Library on Tuesday\, September 16 from 6:00-7:00 pm to celebrate all things “sapphic bookstore romance” with us and local author Andie Burke! Andie will be discussing her latest novel\, With Stars in Her Eyes\, with local book club host Stephanie Jenks. This story centers on love found in the most bookish of places; when cellist Courtney returns home for a respite from a botched performance and spiraling rumors\, she stumbles into love with a newcomer looking for a fresh start… who happens to work in the tattoo shop next door to Courtney’s best friend’s bookshop. After her conversation\, Andie will answer questions and sign books. \nCopies of With Stars in Her Eyes will be available for purchase at the event but you can preorder signed and personalized copies ahead of time on our website here. \n*Include personalization requests in the notes field at checkout and select “Pick Up” if you’d like to pick it up at the event or shipping if you cannot attend. \n  \nThis free\, public event is presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: A swoon-worthy sapphic bookstore romance about fresh starts and finding that one person who feels like home from breakout author Andie Burke (Fly with Me). \nSeconds from a meteoric career launch\, cellist Courtney Starling suffers a frightening migraine attack during a key performance. While harmful rumors fly\, she escapes to her happy place—her best friend’s Kansas bookshop. Courtney’s working incognito when a scream sends her leaping off a shelving ladder to find the woman who screamed cowering near the register. \nWhen Thea Quinn dropped in for a misdelivered package\, she did not expect a mortifying encounter with a bearded dragon in front of an inconveniently attractive bookseller. Clutching an upcoming book club flyer and the tattered shreds of her dignity\, she heads back to her new piercing job at the tattoo shop next door. She moved to this quirky place for a fresh start. But maybe the meet-disaster was a sign? Maybe Thea needs to branch out beyond her photography hobby and connect with new people…like at a historical romance book club run by a particularly mysterious and sexy bookseller with a pixie cut? \nFriendly lunches become stolen moments between the bookshelves. Courtney and Thea’s old problems feel eons away. But just as their chemistry heats to a combustion point\, consequences from Courtney’s past arrive literally on her doorstep at exactly the wrong moment. New revelations and surprising connections take the pair from feeling joyfully lovestruck to confusingly star-crossed. Both women must decide what they’re willing to give up for happily ever after. \nAbout the author: Andie Burke specializes in big-hearted queer romcoms that kick-off with meet-disasters rather than meet-cutes. When not writing\, she works as a pediatric radiology nurse. She lives with two small but hilarious humans in a Maryland home filled with an alarming number of books\, ultra-fine point pens\, and dehydrated houseplants. She is the author of Fall for Him as well as Fly with Me\, one of Autostraddle’s Best Queer Books of the Year.

SUMMARY:Lacey N. Dunham: The Belles
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Curious Iguana from 6:00-7:00 pm on Friday\, September 12 for a meet-and-greet with author Lacey N. Dunham as she promotes her debut novel\, The Belles. This dark\, coming-of-age story centers on an exclusive clique that tests the boundaries in risky ways as they navigate their way through college in the 1950s. Copies of The Belles will be available for purchase at the signing. \nThis event is free and open to the public. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: In this richly atmospheric\, dark academia debut novel\, a young woman with a secretive past will risk everything—including her life—to fit in. \nBelles never tell… \nIt’s 1951 at the secluded Bellerton College\, and Deena Williams is an outsider doing her best to blend in with her wealthy and perfectly groomed peers. Infamous for its strict rules as much as its prestige\, attending Bellerton could give Deena the comfortable life she’s always dreamed of. \nShe quickly forms an alliance with the five other freshmen on her floor\, and soon they are singled out by the president’s wife as the most promising girls of their class\, who anoints them: The Belles. They walk the college’s halls in menacing unison\, matching velvet ribbons in their hair. But no sisterhood comes without secrets\, and the Belles are no exception. Playing cruel pranks on their dormitory housemother and embarking on boundary-shattering night games\, the Belles test the limits of the campus rules. \nBut as Deena begins to piece together the sinister history of Bellerton\, her own past threatens to come to light\, forcing her to make a dangerous choice. A chilling and seductive coming-of-age story\, The Belles is an excavation of the dark side of girlhood\, the intricacies of privilege\, and the unbridled desire to belong at any cost. \nAbout the author: Lacey N. Dunham is the author of The Belles. She has received support from the Elizabeth George Foundation\, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities\, the Sewanee Writers Conference as a Tennessee Williams scholar\, and Catapult as a merit scholar. SUMMARY:Laura Resau: The Alchemy of Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered about the magic it takes to craft a story? Join us on Sunday\, August 10 from 2:00- 3:00 pm at C. Burr Artz Library to hear from Laura Resau as she discusses the writing process behind her latest novel The Alchemy of Flowers. The story follows a woman who takes a unique job in France tending to an ancient garden\, wherein she discovers new friendships and a mystery that will change her life. For accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nThis event is presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. \nAbout the book: A broken woman. A mysterious job ad. A chance to heal in French castle gardens–but strange things are growing behind the ancient stone walls. This debut adult novel is an enchanting\, modern-day take on The Secret Garden\, sprinkled with magic. Perfect for fans of Sarah Addison Allen. \nHelp Wanted: In search of a gardener for the ancient walled Jardins du Paradis in the South of France. Unique and rustic lodging provided. Off the grid in all ways. One must grow flowers from one’s merde . . . \nExhausted by fruitless attempts to make a family\, Eloise takes the chance of a lifetime to answer an ad in a French gardening magazine. To fly away from her life in the States and tend to both her shattered heart and the flowers of Paradise. And best of all for her . . . \nAbsolutely no children allowed on the premises. \nWithin the high garden walls\, Eloise starts to learn the strange rules of the elusive estate owner. Living and working in isolation with her three companions\, she finds her heart opening again to friendship–and realizes she’s drawn to the handyman\, Raphael. The flowers whisper to her\, enchanting\, delighting\, healing. But why are the workers forbidden from going out during dusk? Who is the “Goddess of the Garden”? Is her mind playing tricks on her\, or does she see a woodsprite flitting through the trees? The giggles and glimpses of a little girl haunt her and make her question: What is real in Paradise and what is illusion? \nEloise tries to rationalize her uneasy feelings and the darkness she uncovers beneath the garden’s lush beauty\, but as she digs deeper into the mysteries of her sanctuary\, she begins to suspect there’s a child on the grounds–who may be in danger. When Paradise becomes a deadly prison\, she must risk everything to protect her newfound family and claim her second chance at happiness. \n“The Alchemy of Flowers captivates the senses as well as the imagination in a magical tale of healing and forgiveness. Burr Artz Public Library branch in Downtown Frederick. \nFor accessibility requests\, email info@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: The New Civic Path: Restoring Our Belief in One Another and Our Nation \nWe are suffering from a crisis of belief in our country today.  So many people have lost faith in America—in our leaders\,  institutions\, and even one another. The status quo is not  working for far too many of us. Our central task today is to  meet this historic moment. But how do we grow our belief that we can get things done together—not as Republicans  or Democrats or Independents\, but as Americans?  How do we rebuild trust and reclaim agency? \nIn this deeply personal manifesto written while crisscrossing the country for his “Enough. Time Build.” civic campaign\, Richard C. Harwood reveals how we can address the fundamental challenges holding us back in America today. We must dedicate ourselves to forging a new civic path that grows our belief that we can move forward amid our real differences. \nThe New Civic Path is a must-read for those who want to spark civic renewal and get our communities and the country moving again. \nAbout the author: Richard C. Harwood\, President and Founder of The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation\, is an innovator\, author\, and speaker. For 35+ years\, he has devoted his career to revitalizing the nation’s hardest-hit communities\, transforming the world’s largest organizations\, and reconnecting institutions to society. He has been recruited to solve some of the most difficult problems of our time\, including being called into Newtown\, CT\, after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. He has appeared in numerous national media outlets and has written scores of articles\, groundbreaking reports\, and nine books. In 2025\, Rich and the Institute are doubling down on the success of last year’s “Enough. Time to Build.” Campaign with the Campaign for the New Civic Path\, anchored by Rich’s manifesto\, The New Civic Path: Restoring Our Belief in One Another and Our Nation.
