SUMMARY:Melinda Beatty: What Is a Pirate?
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to celebrate our very own bookseller and local author Melinda Beatty on Saturday\, October 3 from 11:30 am-12:30 pm at C. Burr Artz Public Library! Join us for storytime with Mel\, where she will read her new book\, What Is a Pirate? Following the reading\, enjoy a fun craft with the author! Mel will also be available to sign books. Copies of What Is a Pirate? will be available for purchase at the event.  You can preorder a signed and personalized copy on our website by clicking here. \nLocation: the Children’s Programming Room at C. Burr Artz Public Library\, 110 E. Patrick Street\, Frederick\, MD\, 21701 \nThis event is free and open to the public. We are proud to partner with Frederick County Public Libraries for this event. \nFor accessibility requests\, email events@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: From the team that brought you The Witch’s Table comes another hilarious and charming story about what exactly makes a pirate a pirate! \nI am a pirate\, so I guess pirates do. \nThe crew aboard the Leaky Sneaker is filled with the piratey-est pirates ever to sail the seven seas. Which is why Captain Bogbrush has no idea what to do with Montague Frippington von Fancypants. Montague wears petticoats while sailing\, takes pearl necklaces as booty\, and politely plunders on raids. Pirates don’t do that! Or can Montague help the captain understand that there is more to being a pirate than what he might believe? \nAbout the author: Melinda Beatty has had years of practice trying to explain to others why she was just having an imaginary conversation between two people that don’t exist\, so becoming a writer seemed like the best way to stop everyone from looking at her funny. After years of narrowboat living on the English canals\, she and her British husband are now back on dry land in Maryland\, where by day\, she’s a mild-mannered indie bookseller\, and by night\, she wrangles words\, crafts projects\, and raises a Labrador and two fierce miniwomen.

SUMMARY:Alma Katsu: Incarnate
DESCRIPTION:Join us for another thrilling evening with author Alma Katsu at C. Burr Artz Public Library on Wednesday\, October 14 from 6:00-7:00 pm. Drawing on her background as a former tech futurist for the intelligence community\, Alma will be presenting about her latest fiction novel\, Incarnate to discuss the dangers of technology\, deep fakes\, and the wide-spread impact of social media on our society today. Following her presentation\, Alma will answer questions and sign books. Copies of Incarnate will be available for purchase at the event.  \nLocation: C. Burr Artz Public Library\, 110 E. Patrick Street\, Frederick\, MD 21701 \nThis event is free and open to the public. We are proud to partner with Frederick County Public Libraries for this event. \nFor accessibility requests\, email events@curiousiguana.com at least two (2) weeks prior to the event. \nAbout the book: From beloved horror maven Alma Katsu comes a terrifying reimagining of The Picture of Dorian Gray for the internet age. \nBeauty doesn’t fade. It feeds. \nDorothy Wagner has spent her whole life wanting nothing more than to be seen. But after failing to make her mark as an influencer\, she takes a job working for a brilliant coder whose company is focused on cutting-edge deepfake technology. And there\, in secret\, is where she creates her salvation. \nIsabella. An impossibly gorgeous girl who takes social media by storm. Dorothy’s artistry is brilliant\, and Isabella seems so real that she garners millions of followers. But everybody knows overnight success doesn’t just happen. And when someone gets a little too close to the truth\, a violent confrontation sends Dorothy on the run\, forcing her to confront what she’s willing to sacrifice to keep her secrets. \nA modern reimagining of a classic tale\, Alma Katsu’s Incarnate is an illuminating\, haunting tale of algorithmic worship and beauty that can kill. \nAbout the author: Alma Katsu is the award-winning author of ten novels\, the most recent of which is Incarnate. She is best known for The Hunger\, a reimagining of the story of the Donner Party\, which was named by NPR as one of the 100 most loved horror stories and won the Western Heritage Award for best novel. Her story The Wehrwolf won the 2019 Stoker award for long fiction. She also writes spy thrillers\, drawing on her career in intelligence\, including Red Widow (nominated for the Thriller Writers award for best novel)\, and The Invisible Enemy\, coming spring 2027. She has numerous works being developed for television\, including Black Vault which is in pre-production with AMC Studios. She has a masters degree in fiction from the Johns Hopkins Writing Program and has been a contributing reviewer for the Washington Post.

SUMMARY:The Reader: A Witchy Book Fair for Adults
DESCRIPTION:It’s the best time of the year… time for Curious Iguana’s annual Witchy Book Fair for adults! \nOn Thursday\, October 29\, from 4:00-8:00pm\, come for a magical evening with Curious Iguana at Attaboy Barrel House\, where we will have a variety of spooky-themed books. Joining us will be authors Leslye Penelope (The Inevitable Undoing of Zahara Douglass)\, K.S. Shay (Portrait of a Witch Undone)\, Robert Plant (Dark Matter)\, and Melinda Beatty (What is a Pirate?); they will be signing and personalizing copies of their books throughout the evening. We’ll have a delicious food truck joining us to serve up some unique goodness\, and Attaboy will provide tempting potions till 9:00pm. Our friends from Oddbelle (formerly The Muse) will also be present to sell some fine witchy-themed wares\, and there will be a tarot card reader as well. \nParking: Park on-site or park at the East All Saints Street Parking Garage (125 E All Saints St\, Frederick\, MD) and enjoy a 7-8 minute stroll to the venue. \nAuthors: \nLeslye Penelope has been writing since she could hold a pen and loves getting lost in the worlds in her head. She is an award-winning author of fantasy and romance. Equally left and right-brained\, she studied filmmaking and computer science at Howard University and sometimes dreams in HTML. She hosts the My Imaginary Friends podcast\, co-hosts the Ink and Magic podcast\, and lives in Maryland with her feline dependents. \nK.S. Shay grew up in the part of northeastern Massachusetts where half the streets are named after people who were accused of witchcraft. She loves live music\, local gossip\, and getting outside. You can find her across social media @ksshaywrites and at ksshaywrites.com. \nRobert Plant is an author based in Maryland who writes emotionally driven fiction with a speculative twist. His novel\, Dark Matter\, is a chilling collection of short stories exploring technology\, mortality\, and the quiet terrors of modern life. When he’s not writing\, Robert enjoys playing hockey\, reading science fiction\, and exploring life’s darker corners with curiosity and heart. \nMelinda Beatty has had years of practice trying to explain to others why she was just having an imaginary conversation between two people that don’t exist\, so becoming a writer seemed like the best way to stop everyone from looking at her funny. After years of narrowboat living on the English canals\, she and her British husband are now back on dry land in Maryland\, where by day\, she’s a mild-mannered indie bookseller\, and by night\, she wrangles words\, crafts projects\, and raises a Labrador and two fierce miniwomen. \nVendors: \nOddbelle (formerly The Muse) is Frederick’s first handmade boutique\, specializing in jewelry\, art and more\, with a focus on local makers! To help you get in the spooky spirit\, they’ll be offering a unique selection of witchy soy candles\, spell jar necklaces\, art inspired by mythology and folklore\, handprinted t-shirts\, hand-sculpted ceramic ghosts and more! \nMy Tarot: Tarot card readings by Jamie Horrell. \nPlease note\, we are not accepting additional vendors or authors to this event due to space.
