Story Time with Mac Barnett & Jon Klassen

May 12 at 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
C. Burr Artz Library, 110 E Patrick St
Frederick, MD 21701 United States

Meet New York Times bestselling authors Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen and hear about their new book, “Square,” the beguiling second entry in the innovative shape trilogy. With their trademark understatement and simplicity, two of today’s most talented picture book creators emphasize the importance of keeping your eyes – and your mind – open to finding wonder where others see only rubble and rocks. Q&A and book signing will follow presentation. Books will be available for purchase at event. Recommended for ages 3 and up. Free; no tickets required. Presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries.   About Square This book is about Square. Square spends every day taking blocks from a pile below the ground and bringing them to a pile above the ground. This book is also about Square’s friend, Circle. Circle thinks Square is an artistic genius. But is he really? With the second story in a trilogy of tales about some seriously strange and silly shapes, Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen nudge readers toward a more well-rounded way of looking at things. Understated as ever and striking in its simplicity, this funny, thoughtful offering from two of today’s most talented picture-book creators emphasizes the importance of keeping your eyes — and your mind — open to wonder where others see only rubble and rocks.   MAC BARNETT is the author of four books illustrated by Jon Klassen: Extra Yarn, which won a Caldecott Honor and a Boston Globe–Horn Book Award; Sam and Dave Dig a…

Talk & Signing: Jewell Parker Rhodes

May 16 at 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
C. Burr Artz Library, 110 E Patrick St
Frederick, MD 21701 United States

Join us for a very special talk and signing with award-winning author, Jewell Parker Rhodes. Jewell will discuss her new mid-grade book, Ghost Boys, followed by q&a and book signing. Free; no tickets required. About Ghost Boys: Twelve-year-old Jerome is shot by a police officer who mistakes his toy gun for a real threat. As a ghost, he observes the devastation that’s been unleashed on his family and community in the wake of what they see as an unjust and brutal killing. Soon Jerome meets another ghost: Emmett Till, a boy from a very different time but similar circumstances. Emmett helps Jerome process what has happened, on a journey towards recognizing how historical racism may have led to the events that ended his life. Jerome also meets Sarah, the daughter of the police officer, who grapples with her father’s actions. Once again Jewell Parker Rhodes deftly weaves historical and socio-political layers into a gripping and poignant story about how children and families face the complexities of today’s world, and how one boy grows to understand American blackness in the aftermath of his own death. About Jewell Parker Rhodes: Jewell Parker Rhodes has always loved reading and writing stories. Born and raised in Manchester, a largely African-American neighborhood on the North Side of Pittsburgh, she was a voracious reader as a child. She began college as a dance major, but when she discovered there were novels by African Americans, for African Americans, she knew she wanted to be an author. She wrote six…
