Meet Maryland writer and naturalist Nancy Lawson, who cultivates compassion for all creatures great, small, wild, and wonderful. A columnist for All Animals magazine, she is the author of The Humane Gardener: Nurturing a Backyard Wildlife Habitat (Princeton Architectural Press, $24.95).In her new book, Lawson describes why and how to welcome wildlife to our backyards. Through engaging anecdotes and inspired advice, profiles of home gardeners across the country, and interviews with scientists and horticulturalists, she applies the broader lessons of ecology to our own outdoor spaces. Detailed chapters address planting for wildlife by choosing native species; providing habitats that shelter baby animals, including the young of birds, bees, and butterflies; creating gardens free of poisons and other common hazards; cohabiting with creatures often regarded as pests; letting nature be your garden designer; and welcoming natural processes and seasonal changes. The Humane Gardener illustrates simple principles for both attracting wildlife and peacefully resolving conflicts with all the creatures who share our world.Presented in partnership with Frederick County Master Naturalists, this event is free and open to the public; no registration required. Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event.
